The Nantucket Historical Association preserves and interprets the history of Nantucket Island and fosters an

appreciation for the significant role that its inhabitants have played in national and world history.

The Nantucket Historical Association is an Equal Opportunity Employer

Nantucket Island was the birthplace of the American whaling

industry − a cultural legacy that still haunts every corner of this

“elbow of sand” thirty miles at sea. A National Historic Landmark,

Nantucket is home to pristine beaches, some 800 houses dating from

before 1850, and a cobblestoned Main Street that travel historian Jan

Morris called “the most beautiful Main Street in North America.”

The Nantucket Historical Association’s mission is to preserve and

interpret the island’s enduring past.

The NHA’s Whaling Museum takes visitors on a spectacular journey

through Nantucket history. The museum features a 46-foot sperm

whale skeleton; one of the premiere collections of scrimshaw in the

world; and galleries devoted to decorative arts, island life, and a fully

restored 1847 candle factory. In addition to the Whaling Museum, the

NHA manages twenty-two historic properties and sites, including: the

Oldest House (1686), the Old Mill (1746 − the longest continuously

functional windmill in the United States), and Hadwen House (an

1845 whaling merchant’s Greek Revival mansion).

The Nantucket Historical Association is seeking an intern with an

interest in garden history and preservation to help maintain a variety

of garden spaces (both contemporary and historical in design),

associated with its Whaling Museum and historic sites. The intern

will work with the grounds maintenance crew and will report to the

Director of Historic Properties. The internship is a full-time position

beginning late May/early June and lasting twelve weeks.
