Nanotechnology & “Smart Textiles”
What are some things that you don’t like about your
clothes?
Possible Clothing Issues:
Shrink
Fade
Stain
Odor
Color
Too Big
Too Small
Too Hot
Too Cold
Wrinkles
All of these issues can be “fixed” through
Nanotechnology!
What is Nanotechnology?
Nano is a Greek word meaning Dwarf or Small.
Nanotechnology is manipulating matter Atom by
Atom, where measurements must be made in
nanometers.
What is a Nanometer?
A nanometer is one billionth of a meter, only three
to five atoms wide. (0.000000001)
Nanometers are so small that 150 of them could fit
across the width of a human hair.
Why do we need Nanotechnology?
The goal of nanotechnology is to build tiny
machines with extraordinary properties in all
kinds of useful textiles, medical devices, and
everyday tools.
Group Work Time
I will count everyone off into groups of ____. You will
be assigned to read over an article about
nanotechnology in application to the clothing
industry. You will be presenting this item to the
class.
Presentation Skills Review
Stand still and straight
Use your loud voice and/or the
microphone
Don’t rush, speak slowly and clearly
