From Mr Anthony Hall, Deputy Head of School Greetings from MIS. Week Three has been another week of high energy and excitement at school with many visitors, an earthquake drill and of course the beginning of our clubs. The response to clubs this term has been impressive, with over four hundred and thirty club places taken up by our students. This equates to an average of eighty students attending a club each day. The MIS community is very fortunate to have so many dedicated teachers who have the passion to share their interests with the students in the afternoons. I also feel that MIS teach-ers are privileged to have so many students that want to take their learning be-yond the day to day, timetabled lessons and have the spirit of adventure to try

something new. Importantly, should your child wish to change clubs or needs to be absent from a ses-sion, please write to your child’s class teacher and they will make the necessary arrangements (spaces permitting). In this Monday’s assembly, we had the honour of a visit from Mr. Oki and Mr. Yasui from Chiba Shi Shakai Fukushi Kyogikai. They came to school to thank us for our efforts to raise money for the Red Feather Campaign (which aims to help less fortunate citizens of Chiba Prefecture). In the 2018-2019 academic year, we managed to raise ¥126,000 for the cause! Student Council Representa-tives June and Baughn received a certificate from the charity group on behalf of the school. We look forward to giving further support to this group in the coming year.

Finally, each term, you will no doubt be aware that the curriculum overviews are available for you

to take a look at on ‘Learning’ page of the school website. These overviews provide you with the

opportunity to find out about what your child will study in any given term. Suggestions for ways you

can support your child’s learning journey are included and additional information, specific to your

child’s grade is also shared.

Kindergarten News

NANOHANA

From Mrs Ali Haggett, Kindergarten Coordinator

Safety on the Playground Playground rules and regulations offer many benefits. They clearly outline safe and appropriate behaviours. Clearly outlining rules ensures everyone knows what to do, regardless of previous experience. Having defined rules also creates ex-pectations, ensuring every user of a play area knows what they should be doing. The children shared their understanding of the rules for the outside playground

during our assembly. They were confident in answering ‘Why is it important to have rules on the playground?’

‘If you throw stones it might hurt someone.’ ‘If you go in there, it might make noise for Elementary.’

‘You might step on it and hurt your foot.’

A Day in the Life of a G5Y Group

We wanted to give you a glimpse into a typical day for us in school. The pictures below show some of these events.

We started with a double maths lesson, then we did our NGRT test…aarrgghh! Next, we played Blokus at break

time and ate some good food at lunchtime – thanks Mum! On a wet and rainy afternoon we had fun making a

birthday card for a special class member, and last but not least we had a candy winner from the ‘Random Egg

Box’! Well done, Yasmin! What a fun-filled day of learning! — Grade 5 Yellow

Grade 1 Students Introduce Themselves in Nihongo

This week the office staff were so impressed by our Grade 1 students who, as part of learning proper introductions in Japanese class, formally introduced themselves giving student-designed business cards, telling their names and sharing what their favourite things are. The G1 students should be very proud of their presentation skills as they were so well-spoken and formal in all of their interactions with the office staff. Well done, Grade 1!

Kindergarten Teachers Go on a Ghost Walk

Members of the kindergarten community visited each other’s classrooms and silently documenting their observations of

pre-prepared learning experiences and displays. Using the idea of ‘WOW, that is impressive!’ or ‘I WONDER why you

did that?’ as key starters to leave notes around the classroom for teachers to use as a reflection tool. This experience

enables staff to share ideas, learning experiences and celebrate their achievements.

G6 Bring Decimals to Life in Maths and Light it Up in Science! The students in Grade 6 have been getting to grips with decimals this week. They have done lots of fun activities trying

to order and round decimals. They also been experimenting with combustion in Science. BOOM!

Grade 6 Tackles National Exams

Let’s give a big round of applause and pat on the back to our Grade 6 students for completing the National Exams in

Japanese and Maths. We are so proud of them for taking their work so seriously throughout the morning of testing.

G2 Teams Up! Both Grade Two classes have been focusing on working as a team, especially during group activities. In PE as a warm up

they had to positon their bodies in different ways to form letters. Some were straight and others were curved. Can you

guess what letter they made?
