Green Datacenter Market Drivers and Trends
Increased green consciousness and rising cost of power IT demand outpaces technology improvements
Server energy use doubled between 2003-2008; resumed growth is not sustainable
Koomey Study: Server use 1.2% of U.S. energy, ICT industries consume 2% of the world’s energy
Carbon dioxide emissions from data centers is similar to global aviation

SuperMUC
Previous Fastest Supercomputer in Europe, 4th in the World
More than 110,000 cores and a peak performance of about 3 petaflops
14,000 Intel Xeon processors running in IBM iDataPlex servers
Hot-water to cool the processors will reduce electricity usage by 40% and save $1.25 million in energy costs per year

Concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) thermal packaging 0.04% of the solar energy from the Sahara desert to cover the electricity demand of Europe.*
CPV allow the conversion of sunlight into electricity with higher efficiencies.
Goal: improve CPV chips to minimize overheating, while the thermal waste energy is collected for a multi-effect boiling desalination process.
Collaboration with Egypt Nanotechnology Center
