Innovative stone protection and stone hardner based on inorganic nano
particles and silicon compound
2 CHEM SPEC SRL
Technical Meeting – Rome, October 4-5/2016 3
CHEM SPEC is an Italian company operating in formulation of protectives and consolidants of mineral building materials.
For the NANO CATHEDRAL project Chem Spec developed with the partners of the project a range of water repellent and consolidant products , based on organic silicon derivates and inorganic nano particles .
The innovation of our formulations is to combine different products to obtain new materials with high performances.

CHEM SPEC selected 2 types of nano materials supplied by our partners of the project :
COLOROBBIA an Italian company
and
TECNAN a Spanish company

Types of nano particle • Nano titania nanometric titanium dioxide
with particles of dimension lower than 100 nanometer (10-9 meter) generally between 5 and 40 nm . Nano titania is generally dissolved in water and organic solvents.
• Nano Silver metallic silver with lower dimension particles than 100 nm , generally dissolved in water or solvent.

NANO TITANIA
The product applied on the building materials as: natural stone, marble , terracotta materials, thanks to the little molecular dimension don’t change the surface aspect giving the following
characteristics and is able to transform the solar light in photocatalytic effect.

Photocatalytic effect
NANO TITANIA absorbing solar light transform it in a high oxide power able to oxidize the organic substances present in the air and in contact with the surface.
7 CHEM SPEC SRL
Technical Meeting – Rome, October 4-5/2016 8
Air purification: photocatalytic skills are able to destroy the organic microparticle ( PM 2, PM 5, PM 10)
Hidrophyilic effect confers to treated stones a self cleaning effect
Reduction of the air pollutants like NOx and SOx, improving the air quality
Oxidation of carbon oxide CO in CO2
Destruction of benzene, aldehyde, ketones
Elimination of spore, bacteria and fungus giving an hidrophilic characteristic to the treated surfaces confering a self cleaning effect.

some considerations…
Nano titania transforms the treated surfaces in anti pollution systems . As some studies carried out by environmentalist societies they pointed out ,
considering the same surface size, the anti pollution effect of nano titania dioxide applied on the surface give the same quantity of depollution as a
forest with medium size trees
9 CHEM SPEC SRL
Technical Meeting – Rome, October 4-5/2016 10
CHEM SPEC suggests the combination of nanotitania particles and alkyl alcoxy silanes monomer both able to
confer:
high water repellent effect, lasting in time,
joined to
self cleaning and antipollution characteristics of nano titania.
These 2 characteristics give a good solution to protection of monuments with a particular attention to
the environment.

NANO SILVER
Applied in combination with monomeric silanes for water repellent and antifouling protection of the building.
Unlike the nano titania, the nano silver reacts even without solar light.
Nano silver is a good choice for:
Application with a low toxicity for man and environment
Effective even in small quantity 10-100 ppm
No chromatic change on the treated surface
Good efficacy against fungi, algae and bacteria
Long lasting effect

The product is able to assure:
• Excellent deep penetration in stone materials giving water repellent characteristics ( by alkyl alkoxy silane) and consolidant ( by ethyl silicate), leaving a good traspirability to water vapour and no chromatic change aspect on the surface.
• The treatment with silane is stable to UV ray and it doesn’t yellow, and it very resistant to acid and alkaline solutions.
• Low environment and for operators impact.
• Product easy to apply

CONCLUSION
21
The studies and applications coming from Nano Cathedral project conferm that nanotecnology combined with traditional protective or consolidant products can achieve new range of products with 2 important goals o results: Protection for stone materials Depollution of the air , using the surface of the cathedrals as forest with
medium size trees It is he first time nanotechnology protect the monuments and improve the life quality of the people.
