Rules for Naming Type III Binary Compounds
The first element in the formula is named first, and the full element’s name is used.
2. The second element is named as though it were an anion.
3. Prefixes are used to denote the numbers of atoms present.
4. Do not say mono if the 1st element has only one atom CO2
![Page 7: Naming Type (III) Compounds](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070500/5681681d550346895dddac3f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Name BF3 Rule 1 Name the 1st element, boron. Rule 2 Name the second element
ending in -ide: fluoride. Rules 3 and 4 Use prefixes to denote
numbers of atoms. 1 boron atom: don’t use mono! Three fluorine atoms: use the prefix tri-.
The name of BF3 is boron trifluoride.

Name the Compound NOName the Compound NO The name for NO is nitrogen
monoxide. Note that the second o in mono- has been dropped for easier pronunciation.
The common name for NO, which is often used by chemists, is nitric oxide.
