Cattle are in many aspects, the mainstay of economic activity in rural Kavango. Not only do the animals provide protein in the form of milk and butter, but they also serve as draft animals to plough or pull sledges. They are also widely viewed as a store of wealth. In rural Kavango cattle are only seldom slaughtered and then mainly for ceremonial purposes.
