ü  Established in 2001 as a consortium

ü  Originally started as a voluntary based activity, eventually moved to a professional organization

ü  Nautilus ü  Mediterranean ü  eXchange Point ü  An IXP in the middle of

the Mediterranean basin

ü  Consortium is supported by members’ financial contributions

ü  A public price list for all members (no individual agreements)

ü  Yearly fees are set by members’ general meeting, upon proposal from board of directors

ü  CINECA guarantees prices that cover its own costs

ü  NaMeX is held by its members ü  Financial contributions are fully employed in

providing professional services back to members

ü  An infrastucture aimed at providing its (now 53) members with new opportunities:

ü  Carrier housing services: requested by network operators in order to establish a point of presence and access private interconnections and IP transit at competitive prices

ü  Peering services for the exchange of IP traffic with a large number of ISPs

ü  Other services: ü  SPC-QXN (PA dedicated exchange network), FUB (Internet quality

monitoring) ü  Over-the-top infrastructures ü  Remote connection to AMS-IX ü  Remote hands

Content Providers

ü  Datacenter provides housing space to major international content providers:

ü  Content providers account for 30% of ISPs traffic today

ü  Cache servers bring content close to end users

National strategies

ü  Redundancy point for national traffic:

ü  ISPs with a national extent and a point of presence in one of the IXPs in northern Italy are showing a growing interest in connecting to NAMEX, in order to:

ü  Provide a disaster recovery site (international fiber paths do not pass through Milan and Turin)

ü  Load balance their backbone traffic

ü  Aggregate traffic from center and southern Italy locally
