Year 1/2 What a fantastic first week back we had. The students in the 1/2 class have done some beautiful paintings which are being used to cover Spelling, Journal and Writing books. We have settled into the classroom well and we have been working hard all day. This morning we began our week of Spelling. This week we are focussing on the sound ‘b’ as in ball, balloon and bubble. The Year 1 students have done such a great job writing out all of their spelling words into their books! Homework is going home this week with students having a spelling list to complete each night, and a maths page that relates to what we did for maths last week in class. Thank you to those students who were able to bring in an old shirt for painting. If you have an old shirt at home that we could use as a paint shirt, please send it in with your child’s name on it.
S Semmler
Year 3/4 What a great start to the school year Year 3/4 had last week. I was super impressed and congratulated the class on their behaviour and attitude. I’ll get those Red Slips out this week! In our first art lesson, we created some ‘Summer Sun’ artwork, which will brighten up the classroom. We have been settling into new routines and this week we start our Spelling in class and also for Homework. This week we will focus on words with “b” or “bb”. In Maths we are looking at place value which will lead onto addition and sub-traction algorithms. Each day we practise our times tables in our maths games. I will also send home a brief class information note this week. Have a great week!

Year 5/6 In Literacy during week 2 we are going to be focusing on creative writing and painting a picture in the reader’s mind by using descriptive language. This week the students will be taught about the structure of a narrative as well using a story starter to help them create an exciting story. Once completed the students will use the computers to publish their stories. For spelling we are focusing on the “B”; B as in ball and Bb as in bubble. The first sound for our spelling is a simple sound to get the students used to the senior primary spelling program. This is because there are only two graphemes for the one phoneme. Late last week our class learnt all about graphemes and phonemes. I encourage parents and carers to quiz their children on this as it is very important. In Maths this week we focussing on whole number. This includes addition, place value and learning about factors. In Science we are focusing on batteries and electricity. We came up with a range of appliances that need batteries that range from drills to remote controls. Throughout this unit we will be creating circuits and looking at how things work.

News NRL Visit On Thursday NRL will coming to visit our school as part of their Roads to Region program. Our school is very lucky to be involved as 2 NRL stars will be coming to talk to our students. We have been told there will be a Manly and Bulldogs player. The aim of the visit to promote Junior Rugby League and the presenters will focus on the importance of staying fit and healthy throughout your life. Students are welcome to bring in merchandise to have signed if time permitting. Swimming Carnival On Friday students have the opportunity to compete in the pre-carnival events. This is for competitors only and for students who have the confidence to complete the distance without stopping and with the correct technique. Students will need to have brought their note to the office by Wednesday 7th February. Students will need to bring on Friday $3 for entry (or have a season ticket), hat, swimmers, towel and sunscreen. Students will be walking to the pool after lunch with Mrs Denise Skinner and will return to Mendooran Central School by 3.00pm.

Sporting Profile
Bailey Thompson is a local 9 year old boy that lives life to the fullest everyday. He loves fishing, football and hanging out with his family on weekends. There’s just something about his infectious personality that makes you want to see him succeed in life. While his journey on this earth hasn’t always been easy, Bailey has absolutely no fear and accomplishes almost everything he sets his mind too. Bailey is an amputee and has a prosthetic leg that assists him with walking, running and getting around like other able bodied children. Bailey competes in every sporting event he can. Last year he went to State three times! He won a gold medal at the State Cross Country and came home proudly displaying it around his neck. During the swimming season Bailey has been attending Western NSW Area Swimming Carnivals on a weekend and competing under the Mendooran Merrygoen Amatuer Swimming Club. Bailey’s family take him every weekend to these events so he can better his swimming and make life long friends. Bailey’s most recent achievement was at the weekend in Dubbo. Bailey won three gold medals in the 9 year old Multiclass section! He came first in the 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. Bailey even managed to take a huge 5.71 seconds off his personal best time for freestyle. Bailey loves to feel like he is making a difference to his own life. Bailey aspires to become a Para-Olympian and compete across the world in many different sports. Congratulations Bailey on your achievements so far and best of luck for all the future ones to come.

Thanks Mandy for having the pool looking spectacular as always for us and training with Mrs Norwood will start again on Wednesday 14th February for all our keen swimmers. A few dates to put on the calendar. Next Pointscore - Friday 9th February 2018 Championships – 23rd February 2018 Presentation – 9th March 2018 at the pool with a free BBQ
