INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Using prior exposure to poetic devices/terms, students will work in groups of three to “fish” for a poetic device. Groups will define their poetic device and then analyze sample stanzas that utilize the poetic device that they defined. Oral presentations of definitions and stanza analysis will take place by groups and whole group discussion will take place. Standards: Reading Standards for Literature 6-12 RL.9-10.4 Craft and Structure 4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meaning; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone). MATERIALS: Cardboard fish, bucket, fishing pole with magnet, definition/stanza analysis directions and worksheet, sample stanzas handout, pencil, highlighter, smartboard. PROCEDURE: 1. Fishing for Words Activity: Teacher will read instructions for fishing, definition, and stanza analysis. 2. Students will already be seated in groups of 3. Each group appoints a fisherwoman, reporter, recorder, and coach. These positions will be explained by teacher. 3. Each fisherwoman comes to room front, uses fishing pole to “hook” (with magnet) one fish. Group then lifts fish’s fin to reveal term to define. 4. Groups work collaboratively to define term and recorder writes term on worksheet. 5. Groups work collaboratively to analyze stanza for examples of usage of their poetic device. Recorder highlights examples during analysis. 6. Teacher distributes page with all stanzas and instructs students to highlight as reporters model analysis of poem on smartboard. 7. Reporters will share definitions with class during oral presentationstudents will record definitions on worksheet. 8.
