MARKING PERIOD 3 PROJECT Mongols – Creation of an Annotated Map
TASK: In this project you will design and produce an annotated map to illustrate World History Themes and “Reasoning Skills.” Maps should not be done on plain white computer paper. Drawings do not have to be perfect, but they should be reasonably accurate and proportionate. You will present your finished map to the
class.
The map should include the following:
1. A title for your map. Your title or subtitle should be a thesis statement about the legacy of the Mongols, as supported by your map. For example, if your map was about the Roman Empire your title might be: “The Roman Empire: The Most Influential Empire to Western Civilization because of the Achievements of the Pax Romana.”
2. Determine the “scope and sequence” of the map. What regions or continents should the map show? Should it show the whole world? What will be at the center? Just remember: Your map must illustrate and include annotations, so determine the scope of the map ahead of time to plan your map effectively.
3. For each of the following three Khanates- the Golden Horde in Russia, Il-Khanate in Persia and Yuan Dynasty in China- you must address the following:
o Accurate borders and labels identifying the Khanate.o Accurate dates identifying the Khanate’s beginning and end. o Briefly, describe at least one significant leader of the Khanate.o A world theme reflected by the Khanate with a supporting example. See the 5 World
Themes on the cover pages of all of your packets.o Include one “Reasoning Skill.” This means evaluating one comparison (similarity and
difference) or CCOT (change and continuity) that exemplifies each Khanate.o Summary statement: What is the most significant impact of each Khanate on it’s
specific region. Make sure to explain and support your evaluation. o These annotations will be illustrated on the map by small pictures or other graphics.
All images must include an annotation. o Other information: Label any additional political or physical features (cities, regions,
mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, etc.) that you want to identify on the map, but not necessarily annotate. Don't forget to give your map a legend explaining any symbols that you use.
o Color, creativity and effort
You may use any resources available, including the textbooks, your class notes, and computers during “Lab Research Days” (please see project schedule for days).
