October 7-11, 2015NAHTM’s annual conference, the premier educational event in patient transportation services, provides the latest information on a variety of topics critical to the important role of patient transportation services in healthcare.

Town Square was a fun place to be…shops, dining and cultural events. NAHTM conference attendees did not need to rent a car to travel far to spend time

with their colleagues, friends and/or family every evening. During the Conference, there were several evening music venues just across the road from the Marriot. Town Square boasts over 40 exciting shops and dining

locations. Adjacent malls, all within walking distance boasted more of the same, including cinema and theater.

Registration-Opening Night!

Once again members eagerly awaited the arrival of our old NAHTM friends to catch up and plan some time together during the days ahead. Noshing on deliciously preparedMexican fare, they caught up, reminisced and talked, talked …and talked!

Members also met some new friends - colleagues who can bring new and exciting perspectives, best practices and trends to our world. There is always something new to learn.

President Pam Douglas-Ntagha and crew greeted all. Her remarks to first time attendees were warm and effusive. It was evident that her belief in the mission of

NAHTM, in the

organization’s power to affect lives was very strong. Pam was very encouraging in her message to our new colleagues… what to expect, who to turn to and how to get involved!

At the end of the Registration/ Welcome Session, many members drifted off to a most welcoming hotel lobby in small groups or wandered off to explore Sugarland. It was a beautiful evening to be out and about, to meet and greet and to anticipate the adventure of another NAHTM conference!

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Welcome! There was ample time to enjoy the breakfast buffet and fellowship before the Welcome Address by NAHTM President, Dr. Pamela Douglas-Ntagha, Director of Patient Services/MD Anderson Cancer Center. Pam introduced the rest of the NAHTM Executive Board: Secretary Elbert Lewis/ Harris Health and Treasurer Charlotte Cumbo/ MD Anderson Cancer Hospital. Members were reminded to give to the NAHTM charity of choice, Gotta Have Sole, a charitable organization founded by Nicholas Lowinger when he was just 14 years old. Nicholas, a native of Cranston, Rhode Island, collects new shoes that are then distributed to children housed in temporary shelters, as well as homeless Vets, throughout the United States. To date, over 10,000 pairs of shoes in have been distributed throughout 21 states! The goal for 2015 was to raise $750.00. (Note: Ultimately, $ 600.00 was raised…Thank You NAHTM members!)

Measuring the Immeasurable…Workplace ViolenceThe 25 th Keynote Speaker, Dr. Sally Wakefield Gillam, Chief Nursing Officer at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, delivered a powerful and timely address on the need to prepare our respective staffs to know when and how to prevent work place violence. As this growing phenomenon is happening in schools, college campuses, military bases as well as businesses all over the country, it will be only a matter of time before medical operations, such as hospitals will be impacted. Dr Gillam, a researcher and innovator in nonviolence crises intervention training for healthcare staff, highlighted key strategies to implement this timely, effective and much needed training in our own organizations.

Friday October 9, 2015A Look Back in Time…

During the Silver Anniversary Breakfast Symposium, the Founding Member of NAHTM, A. Laura Durojaiye, MPA, delivered a retrospective on the early years of NAHTM. From the organization’s inception in Atlanta, GA in 1989, to the first conference held in Atlanta in 1990, Laura recounted past tales accumulated during her years of involvement with NAHTM. Her insightful reminiscence put a human face on NAHTM… a testament to all the Patient Transport folks, past and present who put their collective hearts into keeping the idea of NAHTM going strong, enabling NAHTM to reach the ripe old age of 25! And, hopefully, to push into the future for another 25 years!

NAHTM Annual Member’s Business MeetingAfter a short break, the annual business meeting was called to order. The various committees presented their activity and accomplishment during the past year. Are You Prepared? The day kicked off with a Breakfast Plenary Session addressing the preparedness of a transport department when faced with the impact of a natural disaster. To get her message acrosshe presenter, Devina Patel, MS, CHSP, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at MD Anderson Cancer Center, focused on how her organization prepares for the annual hurricane season. This session outlined ride out and recovery team process on the institutional level as well as on the departmental level. A discussion on the ride out process for the transportation department proved very informative and useful.

More Breakout Sessions…The member’s really stepped up to the plate this year. The range of session topics was superlative and content of each breakout was timely, well organized and beautifully presented! So many sessions, it was so hard to choose…

During the Industry Sponsored Lunch Symposium, Tom Perry, MA, proved that TeleTracking is ever on the forefront of technology. Throughout his presentation, Tom revealed why TeleTracking is on the cutting edge of Care Support solutions and automation.

Party On With Our VendorsFollowing the Lunch Symposium, the members were treated to a hands-on learning experience, viewing and trying out the latest in equipment and technology at the annual NAHTM Exhibitors Marketplace . The inclusion of retail vendors into the mix was a definite winner! Throughout the afternoon merriment and laughter reigned. Games were played, member names were drawn for the many varied and valuable prizes and more great food was served! However, all good things must come to an end and soon it was time to move on and get some rest…and then to continue to “party on” at the evening’s Silver Anniversary Awards and Recognition Gala!

The Marriott Sugar Land Grand Ballroom was an elegant backdrop for this special NAHTM event. Celebrating 25 years of promoting excellence in

hospital-based patient transportation was certainly a milestone achievement for NAHTM. It was evident that the NAHTM Networking Committee, along with Marriott Sugar Land staff, pulled out all the stops to

make this Gala extra special.***

Cocktail hour started promptly at 6:00 PM.the fabulous vocals and musicality of the Prime

Time Band quickly got the party off to a great start. In no time members were up on the floor, dancing

away. At 7:00 PM NAHTM’s ever gracious Mistress of

Sunday October 11, 2015…and Time to Say Good-By…

But not until the icing on the cake! Benchmarking Project - Year One

Page 12: NAHTM - National Association of Healthcare Transport ... Sweet It... · Web viewNAHTM’s annual conference, the premier educational event in patient transportation services, provides

12

The last day of the 25th NAHTM conference was significant in that long awaited advancements in establishing NAHTM Benchmarks were to be announced by the Benchmarking Project Committee:

Dr. Pamela Douglas-Ntagha, Chair Thomas Perry, Sr. Product Manager/ TeleTracking Peggy Thiele, Sr. Product Manager / Sodexo Lakita Pogue, Patient Transport Manager / University of Michigan Caleb Ulrey, Intergration Service manager / TeleTracking Richard Van-Newkirk/ TeleTracking

The Committee reported out the processes employed, utilizing input from over 20 NAHTM/Teletracking client hospitals. The transport statistics from these hospitals were analyzed to establish some initial comparative metrics:

Response and Completion Times Delay impact Productive vs. available times Dispatches per hour

Further “what next” discussions centered on finalizing the details of the program and eventually allowing all NAHTM members to compare their like statistics on an ongoing basis. Conference 2016 will be that year!

***Closing Session: After the Benchmark Session, members joined the Executive Committee for closing remarks as well as any feedback on conference 2015 and ideas for conference 2016. Though last, not least…a very important role in playing a part ensuring another successful conference!

So Long and on to Atlanta!
