2. nor in literary eloquence.

In Sermon 7, Ali: about Satan #1

Satan was taken as the master of their affairs, and he has sponsored them as partners.

Satan has laid his eggs and hatched them in their hearts. He creeps and crawls in their laps. He sees through their eyes, and speaks with their very tongues.

In this way Satan has led them to sinfulness and beautified for them the loathsome things;

Like the action of one whom Satan has shared him in his domain as partner, and speaks the false and untruth through his tongue.

So that inequity may reach the extreme and the wrong may come back to its position.

By Allah they have not put a correct blame on me, nor have they done justice between me and themselves.

So a person has heeded his Lord, and has admonished himself, declared his repentance, and overpowered his passion,

Since death is concealed from him, his hopes deceive him, and Satan is enticing for him, ─that he may commit sin, prompting him to delay repentance, till his death overtakes him suddenly, unawares.

How bad it is that for the negligent person to see his life itself as a proof against him, and his own sinful days lead him to sorrow intense.

We implore Allah to make us and you like one who is not indisposed of Allah’s bounty, whereby no aim ever reduces his obedience to his Lord, nor after death befalls him shame or grief.

Hold to the fear of Allah, Who left no excuse against His warning, and has exhausted all argument of guidance about His path.

Allah has warned you of an enemy (Satan) that resides in the hearts hiding, speaks into ears pleading, ─so as to misguide and destroy, gives false promises and proffers wrong impressions. He presents evilness in an enticing form, showing them as quite light even if they are high crimes.

After he sneakily deceives his sponsors and depletes their pledge, he rejects and spurns what he had enticed, ─ and now he considers serious what he had shown as trivial, and threatening from what was shown as safe.

Verily, Satan presents his ways as smooth to tread on, and he aims to unfasten your religion, knot by knot

And to cause division among you in place of unity, and in division is the sedition.

So avoid his whispering of evil ideas and fend off his enchantments

And accept the good advice of the one who has gifted it to you, and in your minds preserve it.

Beware the enemy of God (Satan) lest he infects you with his disease, or leads you astray through his call, or marches on you with his troops,

Because, by my life, Satan has aimed with his arrow toward you, has stretched his bow strongly, and shot you from a nearby position, and said: "My Lord! As Thou hast left me to stray, certainly will I adorn unto them the path of error, and will I cause them all to go astray."

Although Satan had said so only by guessing about a future unknown and by conjecturing wrong, yet the sons of vanity, the brothers of vehemence and the men of arrogance proved him to be true,…

Therefore put out of your hearts the fires of vehemence and the flames of intolerance. Vanity can exist in a Muslim’s heart by the machinations of Satan, his haughtiness, mischief and whisperings.

Crown your heads with humility, and trample the self-pride under your feet, and cast off arrogance from your necks.

Adopt humility as the weapon between you and your enemy, ─Satan and his forces. He has from every people fighters, recruits and helpers. Do not be like him who feigned superiority over the son of his own mother without any distinction given to him by Allah (except for the enmity caused by envy due to feeling of greatness and the fire of anger that vanity kindled in his heart).

Every year the Prophet used to go in seclusion to Hiraa', where I saw him but no one else saw him.

In those days no Islam existed in a house except that of the Prophet, Khadijah, and myself, their 3rd.

I saw the Light of Divine Revelation and the message, and inhaled the aroma of Prophethood. When the revelation descended on the Prophet I heard the hiss of Satan. I said, "O' Prophet of Allah, what is this hiss?" and he replied, "This is Satan who has lost hope of being worshipped. O' `Ali, you see all that I see and you hear all that I hear, except that you are not a Prophet, but you are a vicegerent (Wazir) and you are surely on the path of virtue."
