M ites are a relatively common external parasite of horses. Some mites feed on the

skin scale and surface tissue and are called ‘non-burrowing’ and others tunnel into the skin and are called ‘burrowing’ mites. Both groups of mites can cause severe skin irritation, itching, dermatitis and infection.

Some species of mites live mostly on the horse however; many species of mites live in the environment and are only on the horse to feed. This can make identifying and treating the mites extremely difficult. Generally, mites like warm, dry to humid conditions so horses with thick heavy coats and breeds with a lot of leg feather seem to be more prone to irritation. Some mite infections such as those caused by Chorioptes equi tend to be worse in winter when horses are stabled and the bedding provides a good environment for the mites to live. However, others like harvest mites (Trombicula spp.) are more prevalent in summer and autumn.

The diagnosis of mite infections is often made based on the clinical signs that the horse is showing. Some horses can be really irritated by mites and a paddock companion, not show any signs at all. Most horses affected will show signs of irritation and itchiness such as stamping the

legs, rubbing legs on the wall or fences and itching the face, body and tail. The mites can cause oozing and weeping from the skin or the constant itching can also cause trauma (wounds) to skin. Often, a secondary bacterial infection can develop resulting in the legs swelling and lameness. The end result is a severe pastern dermatitis which can be mistaken for mud fever.

Sometimes, mites can be identified by close examination of the skin scale and tissue. This usually involves taking hair brush samples or, skin scrapings or, skin biopsies which are then examined under the microscope. However, as some species of mites spend a lot of time living of the horse, sometimes an infection is assumed when the horse improves following treatment for mites.

Treatment can be difficult and often requires a combined approach of removing the source of the infection or the environment (the mites live in) and then treating the horse. Some mites prefer to live in hay and straw bedding so changing to shavings or paper bedding and using haylage or soaked hay can help. Sometimes, clipping the hair short to make the skin environment less hospitable to the infestation improves the situation. The horse itself can be treated with topical sprays and washes and in some cases the use of an injection is appropriate to kill the mites. However, some of these products are not licensed for use in horses therefore; they should only be used under the advice and guidance of your vet. Many horses will also have secondary skin infections that require treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. As the problem is often season related, it can be a recurrent issue each year.

If you have any concerns that your horse is suffering from a mite infection please consult your own vet for advice on the most appropriate course of action for your horse and situation. NM

Q: I have heard that draft horses that keep their feathers can be prone to ‘mites’ can you explain how this would be recognized and how to cure if discovered.

O nce called the Sport of Kings, in the case of Hickstead it might better be phrased as ‘the Sport of Bunns’. Back in 2006 combining his love of Polo with facilities at Hickstead,

it became apparent to John Bunn that a Polo Arena would be an ideal addition to the wonderful facilities at the All England Jumping Course at the Hickstead Showground. Not only would it afford a spectacular arena, but it could also double up as a warm up area for the two major international events held annually at Hickstead.

When you add into the mix a fully functioning clubhouse with restaurant, bar and viewing galleries; we now find that AEPC Hickstead has become one of the biggest and best polo arenas in the country, if not the world, thanks to John Bunn and his desire to create better facilities for this fast growing sport. The arena is 100m long by 50m wide and was built by a locally based company, Curling Contractors Ltd.

To understand Polo and why it becomes a lifestyle is often hard for a novice or lay person to grasp, but venture into this world and I guarantee that you will soon become hooked, and, even better, will take your first tentative steps into this crazy whirlwind universe.

With its roots firmly planted in history, the Chinese, Indians and Iranians all lay claim as originators to the game but the modern game of Polo, although popularised by the British, was firmly established in the state of Manipur in India and it is here that the oldest polo ground in the world is situated at the Imphal Polo Ground. At the end of the 19th century British military officers

imported the game to England and in 1874 the Hurlingham Polo Association drew up the first set of formal British rules for the game.

What is the difference between Winter Arena Polo and Summer Polo played on grass?

Summer or grass polo is played on an open “pitch” which is an incredible 300 yards long by 160 or more yards wide, with 4 players on each team. The goals are centered at each end of the pitch and the grass is carefully maintained in order to promote fast, safe play. A game consists of between 4 to 8 periods of play called chukkas, depending on the level, each up to 7½ minutes long with a 4 minute interval between each chukka during which mounts are generally changed (although this can be done at any time) as a polo pony can run the equivalent of up to two miles during a chukka. The modern polo ball used is white and of high impact plastic and goals are scored by hitting the ball between the goal posts - only if the ball goes wide can the opposing team gain a free ‘knock in’ creating flow of play.

Winter or Arena polo is a far greater spectator sport as it is played in a much smaller “walled” arena

The All England Polo Club

on an all-weather surface; the arena being up to 100m long and 50m wide. There are only 3 players per team and the ball used is larger and made of inflated leather, like a mini football. A match is between 4 – 6 Chukkas, depending upon level of play, and due to the more continuous nature of the game, each chukka is reduced to 6 1/2 minutes each and the ponies can be changed frequently. The smaller area creates a much faster and uninterrupted pace of play.

A great analogy of the difference can be drawn by a comparison between tennis and squash.

At the All England Polo Club – Hickstead, fixtures are now in place for the 2013/14 Season and although this has already started in earnest, look out for the following fixtures:

Weekend 7th & 8th December The Zamar Tournament 0-4/5-8 Goat Tournaments

Weekend 21st – 22nd December The Hickstead Ladies Arena Tournament 0-4/5-8 Goal Tournament plus Battle of the Sexes

Weekend 1st – 2nd February The Arundel Equine Hospital Polo Cup

Weekend 15th – 16th February Aston Scott Polo Cup 0-4/5-8 Goat Tournaments

Saturday 1st March Arena Polo Test Match for the Bryan Morrison Trophy and Clogau 12 Goal Challenge

Having been at last years’ International Arena Polo Test Match, I quickly realised that there is a huge team behind the scenes that work extremely hard to put on ‘a show’. The groundsmen, the polo ponies and grooms, the marketing team, the sponsors, the trainers, event co-ordinators, photographers, suppliers and caterers and of course the players, not to mention (where do they get their

commentators from) excellent commentary - if nothing else go along to listen to this, it will have you in stitches.

Arena polo is a game that can be played by all, from the novice who cannot even ride through to the high adrenalin seeking junkies. It is fast, furious and above all ‘fun’.

I caught up with AEPC Polo Manager, Sarah Wiseman and Polo Secretary and Assistant Manager, Phern Latta over a lovely cup of coffee and found out just what it is like to work in the Polo world.

Sarah is now into her seventh year as Polo Manager at AEPC Hickstead and believes she has found her ideal job. Since the age of 12, Sarah has been in love with Polo, playing initially for the Surrey and Burstow Pony Club before she then joined Knepp Castle B

and Hurtwood Park Polo Clubs where she has established herself as a very fine player, and one of the best female polo players in the country. Sarah now combines working as Polo Manager and instructor at AEPC Hickstead in the winter and runs Knepp Castle in the summer. As Sarah adds, “I am so lucky! I get to reap the rewards of training pupils in the winter months and then I am sent off to play all over the world during the Summer”.

Playing Arena Polo has helped Sarah to both improve her polo and her “string” of ponies. Not only have Sarah’s Arena and field polo handicaps improved but she has been able to use the four walls of the Polo arena to strengthen and improve the agility of her younger or more complicated horses.

As AEPC’s recently crowned ‘Most valuable player of 2012/13 Nick Clague remarked, “playing against Sarah is always a challenge, she is very talented and clever with it; a dangerous combination!”

Sarah has a passion which is clearly evident as she talks about teaching players who are a complete novice to the more experienced who just want to hone and brush up on their skills. “Sometimes” she says, “it is easier to teach someone who has never even sat on a horse before”, a skill she often gets to practice with the visiting corporate groups or hen and stag parties. Sarah firmly believes it is possible to get someone playing, or at least staying on and hitting the ball, within 4 one hour lessons.

The AEPC takes pride in catering for all standards, both accomplished and absolute beginners, and has a readily available string of highly skilled polo ponies/horses. Ideally the ponies should be under 16hh at best, small and compact, ranging from five years to 15+ years old. There are usually at least six on site and Sarah and the team work hard at bringing them on. Thoroughbreds are most commonly used for Polo, as they have great stamina, are fast, agile and react well as a herd. These days it is not uncommon to find racehorses being retrained for Polo as they often have the necessary

temperament and experience that can be utilised. All horses have their manes clipped, and tails wrapped or braided, as a safety measure to avoid tangling with the mallets or the reins.

Arena polo is not for wimps or the faint-hearted! The winter seasons’ weather conditions in the UK can be unpredictable and if spectating from anywhere other than from inside the wonderfully cosy Arena-side Clubhouse, then thermals and heavy coats are the rule rather than the exception. But to quote Billy Connolly, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong type of clothing!” Perhaps this is why the

hospitality and the social side of the game are almost as raucous as the game; what better than a flask of hot toddy to keep you warm, followed by a hearty meal and even more heart warming beverages to jolly the mood along. Perhaps if you find this a little chilling, then consider the very popular Snow Polo that takes place each year. Not to be found yet in the UK as generally you require a frozen lake or two and plenty of snow, but, if you fancy a trip to St Moritz, Aspen or Kitzbuhel, you will definitely need the thermals.

This year Sarah has been joined by Phern at the AEPC who has her own string of polo ponies which unfortunately she has had to leave behind at home for the winter, while she takes on the task of promoting Arena Polo at Hickstead. I would thoroughly recommend getting in

T he very instant contact is made with an electrified fence Guardian Equestrian’s

innovative rug transfers the current to panels on the inside of the rug. For the first time your electric fence will be as reliable and effective as when your horse is un-rugged.

So how do They Work? These innovative rugs perform without any wire, batteries or electrics. The unique patent pending designs and technology enable the rug to act as a direct channel between your fence and your horse.

Upon contact with an electrified fence the current is instantly re-directed, the exact current put out by your fence unit is transferred to the inside of the rug.

This means your horse will respect the fence as they would when not

Guardian Equestrian Competition

The only rug to perform with electric fencingwearing a rug at all, just simple designs that provide the ultimate protection from escapes and injuries.

New for 2013 the hand crafted inside panels are independent from the rug meaning you can layer up multiple rugs underneath for those particularly stormy or snowy days with zero compromise to your electric fencing. This means your horse can be well and truly wrapped up warm throughout the winter but will also be safe and sound in his paddock.

why choose thermatex?Need to bring your horse’s body temperature back to normal after exercise? Does your horse boil over with excitement when travelling to and from shows? With the help of Thermatex you can stay in control of these situations.

Thermatex produce rugs for all seasons and accessories from their factory in Wales. The SHR knitted fabric with its distinctive quilted squares, works by allowing airflow whilst at the same time expelling excess moisture. Those who are familiar with Thermatex will notice how unwanted moisture gathers (rather like mist) on the outside of the rug once the horse begins to cool.

Once the SHR cooler rug has been placed on the horse it will start working. The fabric draws away any excess moisture before releasing it into the atmosphere, thus helping your horse regain natural body temperature. During this process the knitted fibres will gently relax and interlock with the coat, allowing the rug to mould perfectly around the shape of the horse. Your horse will instantly feel the benefit of this technical rug by staying warm and totally comfortable.

It’s worth noting that Thermatex make a lighter weight version of the, the SHRL. This rug has the same fantastic wicking properties but doesn’t have the middle insulation
