Nagaoka’s Sake Attracts and Intoxicates the World

During their three-day stay in Nagaoka from February 28th, a group of five designers from Taiwan visited several sake breweries in the city. The number of tourists from Taiwan to Niigata Prefecture has been increasing in recent years. In preparation for welcoming inbound tourists, the city will make positive commitments to further promoting locally-brewed sake by designing new labels and sending various kinds of information to the world about Nagaoka’s sake via SNS.

The 400th Anniversary of the Establishment of Nagaoka

Chapter 3

Nagaoka’s Yukyuzan, lovingly called “Oyama” by many citizens, has been known as a cherry-blossom viewing spot since the closing days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Tadatoki Makino (1665-1722), the third lord of the Nagaoka domain, began the planting of cherry blossom trees, Japanese cedars, and pine trees there. In 1781, Tadakiyo Makino (1760-1831), the ninth lord of the Nagaoka domain, built Aoshi Shrine at Yukyuzan and planted more cherry trees in honor of Tadatoki Makino, who loved cherry blossoms. In 1916, on the 300th Anniversary of the Establishment of Nagaoka, representatives from the business sector, including Matashichi Yamada (the president of the former Hoden Oil Company) formed the Reishûkai Association and developed Yukyuzan Park in the approximately 80,000-tsubo (1 tsubo = 3.3 m2) area surround-ing the shrine. In 1920, the association donated the park to the city. There are currently over 2,500 cherry trees in the park and their beautiful blossoms attract nearly 80,000 visitors every spring.

Nagaoka is blessed with an excellent sake brewing business and is currently drawing the attention of many sake admirers around the world. On February 23rd (local time), Yoshinogawa Co., Ltd., a sake brewery from Nagaoka, held a sake-tasting event in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S.A., Nagaoka’s sister city. This event was met with a favorable reception from local restaurants and distribution businesses. Such events may hopefully help the brewery expand its overseas market share in the future. The Settaya area in Nagaoka has been known as a neigh-borhood of breweries for many years. Many time-honored sake and shoyu (soy sauce) breweries and miso (soybean paste) factories are concentrated here. In order to welcome more overseas visitors to Nagaoka, the city will support and promote these brewing and fermen-tation businesses, focusing on sake to open the door to the other businesses.

To welcome more overseas visitors to Nagaoka by showing Nagaoka Fireworks: With their warm hospitality, language volunteers are ready to provide various kinds of information about how to enjoy the Nagaoka Grand Fireworks Show.

To present Nagaoka Fireworks throughout the year: Known as a town of fireworks, the city has present-ed Nagaoka Fireworks in a variety of occasions, such as the Nagaoka Fireworks Winter Fantasy held at the National Government Echigo Hillside Park in December 2017.

To promote Nagaoka Fireworks overseas: At the Honolulu Festival, the city has presented Nagaoka Fireworks in Honolulu, Hawaii in the hopes of gaining more Nagaoka Fireworks fans willing to visit Nagaoka.

Nagaoka Known for Its Excellent Japanese Sake

The City of Nagaoka is proud of ranking second among municipalities within Japan in terms of the number of sake breweries. In 2014, Nagaoka became the first city in Niigata Prefecture with an ordinance that encourages its citizens to drink sake when making a toast. “Echigo Nagaoka Sake no Jin,” a sake tasting event is held annually in Nagaoka in October.

A Guide to Cherry Blossom Viewing (Ohanami)

The month of April, the season for cherry blossom viewing, has arrived. According to cherry blossom forecasts, cherry blossoms this year may come out as usual or a little earlier than usual in most locations in Niigata Prefecture. There are many well-known cherry blossom viewing spots in Nagaoka City and Niigata Pre-fecture. Here are some spots you might want to check out. (1) Yukyuzan Park Visitors can enjoy nearly 2,500 cherry trees in full bloom at Yukyuzan Park, where “Sakura Matsuri”, a special cherry blossom festival, will be held from April 6th (Fri.) to May 6th (Sun.). Over 500 lanterns illuminate the blossoms at night (6:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.) and create a mystical fantasy world. There will be a special event entitled “Oishiimono Hiroba,” a plaza for regional specialties, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on April 21st (Sat.) and April 22nd (Sun.). Many stores will serve dishes using locally grown or produced ingredients. If you are driving, please remember that the traffic around the park is usually heavily congested and parking lots are full during the season, especially over the weekends.

(2) Fukushimae Canal Nearly 170 time-honored cherry trees, planted in the 1920s, display a spectacular view of gorgeous blossoms. Petals falling on the water are extremely beautiful and fascinate many visitors every season. Come and enjoy the sight of illuminated blossoms reflecting off the water. The School Attendance Support System

Necessary Items: ・Mitomein/Hanko (guardinan’s personal seal)

・Guardian’s Deposit Passbook Application Period: From April 1, 2018 to April 27, 2018 ・ Hours for application in April: 8:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. (except for Saturdays, Sundays, and National Holidays) ・ Even if your application is past the aforementioned period, it may be accepted at any time. In such a case, the designated date for the approval will be the first day of the following month after the application is submitted.

This system provides subsidies for school supplies and activities to parents or guardians who have financial dif-ficulties. These subsidies will offset expenses incurred by households with children attending elementary school or junior high school and whose total incomes for the previous year are lower than the standardized amount. If you wish to receive these subsidies, please complete the application as shown below. Applications must be filed annually even if you were approved the year before.

Subsidies are offered for: School materials, things used for commuting, school materials for new enrollment, materials for physical edu-cation, school trips, field trip activities, transportation, school lunch, student council & PTA membership fees, and medical treatment of diseases specifically designated by the city’s school education system.

Application Procedures: Application forms are distributed at school. Fill out the form with the necessary information and affix your personal seal. Submit the application form to the School Affairs Division or the Regional Promotion Division of each district branch office.
