formerly offered by Coronado Pathways Charter here at CHS. At the time of registration last spring, our obligation was to provide online courses to any students enrolling at CHS in the fall who were formerly Pathways students. As we were uncertain about how online courses would be offered in tandem with our traditional courses at CHS, we did not open online options to all students for registration last spring, and staffed our school accordingly. Over the summer we put a structure in place to offer SOLO (self-organized learning opportunity) classes in each subject area for one period of the day over five periods, with additional courses offered for students in need of credit recovery. Most students enrolled in SOLO courses are former Pathways students who were screened by counselors as appropriate fits for online, independent learning. On a case-by-case basis, we have enrolled additional CHS students in SOLO courses, primarily as a result of schedule conflicts. Will my student have an opportunity to enroll in SOLO classes next semester or next year?

We look forward to offering online courses to CHS students as part of registration for school year 2016-17 this spring. As with any course registrations, our counselors will guide and advise students about the appropriateness of online learning options as they relate to individual students’ motivation, independence, and accountability.

the appropriateness of online learning options as they relate to individual students’ motivation, independence, and accountability. Current students do NOT have the option to switch to online courses now or at the semester, unless other course changes due to inappropriate placement necessitate such a change. CHS does not offer semester-long courses (except for government and economics), and we have staffed our school for the entire school year.

What have you learned so far this year through implementation of SOLO courses on a small scale? We are learning more each day about which types of learners benefit from online learning, and how to predict if your child may excel in such a structure or setting. We will publish these characteristics in the spring to help your child choose courses for next year.

We will be looking at how to schedule SOLO courses during the day to maximize students’ access to their resources and minimize conflicts with traditional CHS courses.

We are learning that the experience in some online courses may be very different from the experience in traditional courses, and that this difference can pose challenges when students take an online course one year and the traditional CHS course the next. We will be exploring the extent to which this is true in foreign language, for example, so we can properly advise students.

What is the future of online learning at CHS? We believe that it won’t be long before most students graduate from CHS with at least one online learning experience on their transcripts. While we will proceed with caution and continue to carefully advise students on their best and most appropriate course loads, online courses provide students with a structure and mode of learning they will likely see again in college or career, provide flexibility for students with schedule conflicts or extracurricular obligations, and can allow students to focus attention on specific courses in different ways while maximizing their strengths. Thank You, * To the Coronado Schools Foundation and CHS families for supporting our schools through donations and attendance at this year’s Gala held over the weekend! Your contributions enrich learning inside the classrooms and beyond! *To our CHS PTO for teacher and department funds to offset spending from teachers’ own pockets for school supplies. Every little bit counts! Our CHS PTO also hosts monthly teacher appreciation meals and treats, which bring us together in the staff lounge for food and collegiality. *To the families and class advisors who put in long hours to support safe and fun float building last week, as well as class bonding and teamwork. Bravo, all! *To the CHS Islander community for supporting security guard and beloved Islander Forrest Perkins and his family through the loss of his son, who attended CHS. Go Islanders!

Important Attendance Reminders

Parents, we need as much advance notice as possible whenever you need to have your student released from school during their school day. Please have your student go to the attendance office upon their arrival at school with a note stating the reason for early release and the release time. Or, if you make any appointment after the school day starts, please call the attendance office (619-522-8907, press 1) to request an early release. Please do not leave early release messages on voicemail or in an email. Also, please remember to call the attendance office to report the reason for absences within 24 hours of the absence. Your cooperation with the above procedures will be greatly appreciated.

San Diego Film Festival

October 2, 2015

Students from the CoSA film program recently attended the San Diego Film Festival’s student workshops day that took place at the San Diego downtown Reading Gaslamp movie theater. Students along with their instructor Carlos Pelayo took the Coronado ferry to the event. At the event they heard a lecture from CreatorUp! founder Mike Tringe about filmmaking and its process. Students from various programs and schools throughout San Diego County participated in the one day event. Students also got to create and post their own short video vine using their smart phones. Students reviewed the films and saw how immediate and accessible their work could be using today’s powerful technology. The workshop provided lunch as well as showed several short films featured at the film festival.

Become a Partner in Education In Support of our Students and Schools!

Coronado Unified receives $1,500 less per student than across the bridge in San Diego, simply due to our demographics. That leaves our school district in the lowest 10% of funding as compared to other districts across the state. In order to continue these programs that are not state mandated and would otherwise not be possible without your support, please make a donation today. While we ask for a fully tax-deductible donation of $1,200 per student, payable monthly, every donation matters. Our real goal is 100% participation, be it $25 or $2,500. Donations can also be made at www.csfkids.org, stop by our office at 201 Sixth Street, or download a form and mail to this address. Thank you in advance for your support.

Masquerade on Bourbon Street Benefit Auction a Rousing Success! On behalf of the Coronado Schools Foundation Board, Staff and Auction Chairs Abby Buckley & Condra Mullins, we thank the incredible volunteers and community members who came together to make the annual CSF Benefit Auction on October 24th a huge success! While final numbers are still being calculated, we anticipate this year breaking last year’s record of netting $250,000 for our schools. With our generous underwriters including Title Sponsor Mary Jo Morgan and over 250 cash and in kind donors, we further reduced our costs to provide maximum return for Site Program Grants 2016-17. This would not be possible without the amazing team of volunteers who worked with our staff. CSF Teacher Ambassador Nicole Belong helped coordinate CHS auction packages and we thank the teachers and staff who contributed. CSF Student Board Rep Sam McNeal did an outstanding job working before and during the event with our staff. Our thanks to Matt Heinecke, for his fabulous excellent performance during the VIP Reception/Silent Auction and in the Hotel Del’s Garden Patio, and Crown Town Music’s high energy performance during the main event in the Ballroom. To view photos of the event, please visit www.csfkids.org, click on the “view photos” link, and insert the password: csfauction15.

SAVE THE DATE - CSF TELETHON 2016 – March 10th in the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center and Quad. Produced by students for students, a fun, family event that you’ll want to be sure and attend with children performing, K-12.

Coronado High School NJROTC News Coronado High School’s NJROTC “Islander Company” continues our tradition of offering a wide variety of team-building opportunities to our students. We’ve been busy this fall, and highly visible in the community. One of our teams performed a Color Guard presentation for the singing of the National Anthem for a Padres game [a game that the Padres won! - - so they want us to come back many times next season]. Our students performed various functions in support of many community service events, including: the 9/11 memorial 10K run, Strand Elementary back-to-school night, Pop Warner football playoffs, Coronado Schools Foundation’s annual auction/ball, and the MooTime 17th birthday celebration. Obviously our presence in the Homecoming Parade was another means of displaying our visibility in the community, as well as our frequent Color Guard appearances at CHS football games. We also conducted many less-public activities which were fun (and sometimes they were even educational and/or character-building). Our first overnight Field-Trip of the year was a visit to the Reagan Presidential Library [the week after they hosted a Debate amongst the Republican presidential candidates], followed by a day at Magic Mountain Water-Park. We entered two teams into the MCRD Boot-Camp Challenge obstacle-course race. We hosted ten high school NJROTC companies for an aquatics-based competition called Neptune Olympics (we placed 3rd overall). We also hosted eight high school NJROTC Air Rifle teams in a Marksmanship competition. Finally, we sent 35 volunteers to an overnight intensive leadership training event called Mini-Boot-Camp. As you can see, we conduct many events outside of normal school hours. We also stay very busy during each school day. Our physical fitness training emphasizes teamwork, but has proven to be demanding. Running in the rain and during Heat Days sounds tough, but was a real confidence-builder. Our marching skills have improved dramatically since classes began in August. And our academic coverage of naval science topics is relatively fast-paced. All of these areas of NJROTC development will be tested against our peers at regional high schools during a series of upcoming Drill Meets. Although we may laugh when our instructors tell us “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and “the busier you are, the more you get done” we’re beginning to realize they may be right.
