    The book o Revelation places a blessing on the person who

    reads it (1:3). More than that, it puts a blessing on the person

    who keeps (NIV, takes to heart) it. Thats right, there are

    commands in Revelation to embrace and obey. Revelation

    is not just odder or end-times speculation (in contrast to

    what is so oten taught). Revelation does contain prophecy

    and is written in apocalyptic language. But Revelation is also

    epistolary literature. Similar to Romans through Jude, thereare commands to obey in Revelation.

    The Bible study or this years NACC will be, Victory

    Commands rom Revelation. The ocus will be this grammar

    o victory. Revelation contains a host o imperatives, i.e.

    commands that Christians are to obey.

    Even a casual reading o the English text o the Book o

    Revelation reveals at least twenty-nine dierent imperatives.

    First there are negative commands. Christians are told not

    to be araid (1:17; 2:10) and not to worship an angel (19:10;

    22:9). John was specifcally told not to weep (5:5) and not to

    write certain things down (10:4).

    But secondly, and overwhelmingly, there are a host o

    positive commands. These could be subdivided into every-

    thing rom most numerous to most theologically signifcant.

    In addition to these categories could be added beatitudes

    (1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:7; 20:6; 22:7, 14), woes (8:13; 9:12; 12:12;

    18:16, 19), and shouts o praisewhich unction somewhat

    like imperatives (4:8, 11; 5:9-10, 12-14; 7:10, 12; 11:15, 17-18;

    12:10-12; 15:3-4; 16:5-7; 19:3, 4, 6-8).

    The most used command in Revelation is come. It appears

    twelve times (4:1; 6:1, 3, 5, 7; 11:12; 17:1; 18:4; 19:17; 21:9;

    22:17, 20). Sometimes its visionary or John to receive the

    revelations rom God (4:1). Sometimes its an invitation to

    see the judgments o God (6:1, 3, 5, 7; 17:1). Sometimes

    its a challenge or Gods people not to be seduced by the

    world and to be distinct rom it (18:4). Sometimes its an

    invitation to behold the Bride o Christ (21:9),

    and sometimes its the wish o every believer or

    Christ to return (22:17, 20).

    The second most used command is write. It

    appears ten times (1:11, 19; 2:1, 8, 12, 18; 3:1, 7,

    14; 21:5). As one would expect, this imperative

    comes toward the beginning and the ending

    o the book. Jesus wants to speak words to

    the seven churches so he instructs the angels

    (messengers) o the seven churches to write his

    word down. But also its important to God or

    us to know as much as possible about the new

    heaven and new earth so he instructs John to

    write it down. Think o the enduring quality o

    the written word.

    Not as numerous but still signifcant is the

    command, hear. It appears seven times (2:7, 11,17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22). These are all contained in the

    letters to the churches. In act, every church is

    told to obey this command. Think o the rich

    heritage ohearing the Word o God (Deut.

    6:4; Rom. 10:17). Hearing in the Bible is not

    just listening, but it also includes heeding and

    obeying.

    Many other commands are given in Revelat

    worship (14:7; 19:10; 22:9), repent (2:5, 16; 3

    be aithul (2:10), hold on (2:25; 3:11), take t

    scroll and eat it (10:8-9), ear God and give h

    glory (14:7), give back to her a double porti

    judgment (18:16-7), and praise our God (19

    What eels more gratiying at night than to

    your head on your pillow and realize that o

    that particular day you really did something

    that Jesus would have you do? The comma

    o God are not burdensome (1 Jn. 5:3). Whe

    embraced, they grant victory.
