5) EXAMINATION REFORMS IMPLEMENTED

The University Department evaluation processes are automated through intranet

facilities called ARMS. The faculty can enter attendance and marks of the

students periodically and also can obtain the final results of the examination.

Initiative is under way for the implementation of total e-governance for the

successful conduct of examinations. In this connection, online data acquisition

pertaining to students profile, attendance and internal assessment marks and

registration for the end semester examinations will be implemented. Further it is

proposed to acquire/generate online the following information.

Registration of elective subjects

Examination absentees statement

Registration for reevaluation

Registration for review

Generation of Hall Ticket, nominal roll (Register number and subjects

registered) and attendance for the end semester examinations.

In order to ensure transparency in the evaluation process the internal

assessment answer scripts are given back to the students after evaluation.

o In case of end semester examinations, the students are allowed get the

photocopy of the answer script

o The students are permitted to apply for the reevaluation of the answer

scripts.

o Also the students are permitted to review the result of the reevaluation

The entire process rights from the admission of students in the first semester till

the completion of the programme and the award of degree is computerized and

entire software is developed in-house.

There is a database containing the examination related information of all the

students appearing for the semester examination. This database helps in

generating the time table, students list, attendance sheet, hall ticket and OMR

sheets.

From the database, the requirement of examination of materials is obtained and

the logistic arrangements are made based on the information arrived.

There is an integrated post examination process involving capturing of marks

from the OMR sheets and tallying the attendance, processing and publication of

results and generation of certificates.

39) HEALTHY PRACTICES OF THE INSTITUTION

The Anna University Chennai is committed to excellence in higher education

through the following of academic processes that are fair, transparent, enriching and

give a balance of the professional and social spheres. There are various levels at

which these processes act- administration, student welfare, conduct of academic

courses, conduct of examinations, reviewing of courses, research and

development, exchange programmes, active student bodies, technical societies and

symposia, cultural activities, outreach activities and extension programmes, staff

and student welfare programmes.

A holistic approach towards students‟ knowledge and welfare ensures an

excellent outcome. At the outset, the diverse students who come in are counseled

Page 138: NAACC

137

through orientation programmes. In order to strengthen their weak areas, additional

courses such as English, other languages, Maths, etc., are offered apart from the

basic requisite ones. Eligible and needy students are given scholarships under

various schemes. Students are also inducted into various service or socially

oriented programmes such as NSS, YRC, NSO, etc., They also avail of the various

facilities in the campus such as sports, yoga, etc., Through their years of study, they

play an active role in student societies, both extra-curricular and co-curricular,

thereby getting empowered in decision making and organising. Student advisors

and counselors also help in ensuring that students‟ needs are taken care of.

Exchange programmes with foreign universities expose the students to international

practices through the Centre for International Affairs.

The conduct of the various academic programmes are done in an extremely

methodical and rigorous manner. The different faculties and their chairmen serve to

consolidate the course content for the programmes through Board of Studies,

Academic Council, etc., This is a periodic process which ensures the constant

updating of content based on needs and trends. At the University level, the Centre

for Academic Courses monitors the conduct of different programmes. Within each

programme, the delivery of courses are governed by course instructors and course

coordinators. For each year in a programme, the Class Committee, comprising of

student representatives and staff, is an active means of monitoring the conduct of

courses. The working of the committee is such that feedback mechanism regarding

students‟ performance as well as other needs is inbuilt. Towards the end of each

semester, the student evaluation of staff gives ample scope to examine the strength

and weakness in course delivery so that there is input for future action. Research

programmes are tied in with area of specialisation of faculty as well as the various

centres so as to provide mutual benefits and good knowledge transfer to students

as well as services to society. The examination system ensures a fair evaluation of

students‟ knowledge through an extremely orderly process by the Controller and

Additional Controller of Exams.

The organisation of the University into various Departments and Centres

helps in the consolidation of expert knowledge as well as in connecting knowledge

through interdisplinary ways. This helps to benefit both students and larger society

through study, research, consultancy and extension activities. Further, the

University brings in academic input from the industries through the Centre for

University-Industry collaboration. The various alumni associations of the University

also actively participate in programmes and building projects. The University also

reaches out to larger society through programmes involving women empowerment,

school children, etc.,

Page 139: NAACC

138

The University ensures the welfare of its faculty and students through health

insurance schemes, yoga classes, etc.,

The performance of the University depends on healthy practices in all realms

and cannot come from concentrating on a single sphere. The above discussed

points offer just a glimpse of the various processes and means that the University

has devised in order to foster healthy practices in a holistic manner.
