CONSERVING, PRESERVING AND
Now, Repairing The Palace
Iolani Palace has served many functions since its completion in 1882. From being constructed as a gift from King Kalakaua to his wife Queen Kapiolani to its
use for decades as government offices to the reopening of its doors as a public museum in 1978, the Palace’s story is constantly unfolding. With nearly a century and a half of extensive use, however, comes the need for significant repairs to be made to our beloved historic structure.
Story continues on page 5
Aloha Friends,
Happy New Year from The Friends
of Iolani Palace! Since joining
this wonderful organization as
Executive Director last year, I’ve
had the pleasure of learning more
about this historic landmark and
the many ways our non-profit
organization shares Hawaii’s
history and culture with our community. Mahalo for the warm
welcome and for entrusting me with this treasured wahi pana.
At the end of 2019, we issued a call to action for our friends,
family, and community partners to support our efforts to repair
Iolani Palace and her structures. Since opening our doors as
a public museum in 1978, the Palace has withstood several
structural changes, leaks, and damages, and we must now work
tirelessly to repair, conserve, and preserve it. To read more
about our needs, turn to pages 1 and 5.
While 2019 was a year of change, it was also one of growth and
opportunity for the Palace. In November, we celebrated the
release of Grammy nominee and multiple Na Hoku Hanohano
award winner Amy Hanaialii’s new album Kalawaianui with a
special benefit for the Palace. The month’s festivities continued
with our annual King Kalakaua birthday celebration in
partnership with the Royal Guard of Hawaii Air National Guard.
In December, we decorated the grounds with lanterns and
celebrated the end of 2019 with our beloved tradition of Queen
Kapiolani Evening Tours, a rare opportunity for guests to visit
the Palace at night. Read more about these events on page 3.
This was also a year of new technological opportunities, as we
worked closely with Mid-Pacific Institute on a special Digital
Archiving Project. We also followed up on the work the Junior
League of Honolulu undertook to complete a project over
50 years in the making. Turn to page 4 to learn more about
these exciting and innovative projects.
Mahalo for your ongoing support of our mission to preserve,
restore, interpret, share, and celebrate the unique qualities of
Iolani Palace and her grounds for the benefit of the community.
Aloha,

KING KALAKAUA’S 183RD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONOn Saturday, November 16, 2019, we partnered with the Royal Guard of
Hawaii Air National Guard to celebrate King Kalakaua’s 183rd birthday with
a special event and beloved tradition at the Palace.
Inspired by the styles, colors and décor of the King’s Birthday Jubilee
in 1886, the annual celebration was free to the public, and featured live
entertainment by the Royal Hawaiian Band, Monarchy-era bunting and
décor, and special birthday tributes to the late King Kalakaua. Beginning
with opening remarks, the celebratory event was followed by a Royal
Hawaiian Band performance and the review and posting of the Royal Guard,
overseen by Princess Abigail Kawananakoa.
QUEEN KAPIOLANI EVENING TOURSIn honor of Her Majesty Queen Kapiolani’s 185th birthday, the Palace
continued its beloved tradition of hosting its evening tours from
December 28 through 30, 2019, inviting guests to step back in time and
experience the Palace in its 19th century grandeur.
Our unforgettable celebration of the Queen began with the Opening Night
Reception on Saturday evening. Special guests enjoyed delicious food and
cocktails along with entertainment by Grammy nominated and multiple
Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning entertainers Amy Hanaialii in the
Barracks, and Natalie Ai Kamauu on the second floor of the Palace.
Over the course of the three evenings, the Palace was adorned with shimmering lights, and music filled the halls as it would have at
King Kalakaua’s soirees. The evening tours also provided a rare and special opportunity for guests to visit the Palace at night.
On Saturday, November 2, 2019, we had the pleasure of collaborating with
Grammy nominated and multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning art-
ist Amy Hanaialii for the release of her latest album Kalawaianui and a
benefit for Iolani Palace.
At the elegant affair, guests were treated to a delicious gourmet dinner featuring a partnership with Chefs Ed Kenney and Mark Noguchi. Following an opening performance by Kumu Hula Micah Kamohoalii and Halau Na Kipuupuu and a welcome by our Executive Director Paula
Akana, guests participated in a special “Raise the Paddle” to raise funds
to support the repair of key areas in need at the Palace. The unforgettable
evening concluded with a performance by the talented Amy Hanaialii, who previewed new tracks on Kalawaianui.

In 2016, we began a partnership with Mid-Pacific Institute, working closely with
juniors and seniors in its Museum Studies class for a special Digital Archiving Project.
We’re excited to continue this special collaboration as new students continue to visit
the Palace for this project.
Brian Grantham, Mid-Pacific Institute’s director of educational technology, values the
partnership and the opportunity it affords Mid-Pac’s students to learn about historical
artifacts. “One of the key elements of this course is to have students learn both the
technology used to digitize artifacts as well as the cultural and historical background
of each artifact.”
A student in the fall 2019 Museum Studies class, Judith Tamayo, visited the Palace
with her fellow students in November to scan a variety of cultural resources, including
an umeke with Queen Kapiolani’s likeness on one side and the Hawaiian coat of
arms on the other; the Blue Room chaise lounge, damaged by a bullet during the
Wilcox counter-coup; and the bullet that was embedded in the lounge following the
counter-coup. “Through the scans, we’re able to tell stories, and we can share
information with students from around the world,” said Tamayo. “Coming into this
class, I didn’t know we would have access to such diverse resources. Now, I’m excited
to be a part of a project that makes archives such as these accessible to the public.”
The partnership continues in 2020, as a new group of Museum Studies students will
visit the Palace in the spring for the continuation of the Digital Archiving Project.
MID-PACIFIC INSTITUTE
Digital Archiving Project
Over the past few years, Iolani Palace’s Curatorial and
Education departments followed up on work the Junior
League of Honolulu undertook to complete a project
over 50 years in the making. In an effort to make documentation
relating to the Palace’s monarchy-era history available to the
public, the Palace digitized research the Junior League of Honolulu
compiled and indexed just prior to the restoration of Iolani Palace.
These files are now available for scholars, researchers and the
general public to access for free via the Palace website.
Featuring dozens of subject headings, the Junior League files
serve as a resource for those wanting to know more about the
historic building during monarchy-era Hawaii, and also provide
historic content between the Palace and the greater context
of late 19th century Hawaii. The files span a multitude of topics
including architecture, decorative arts, interior design, political
and social history, international relations, and music, which
makes them valuable to anyone wanting to know more about
Hawaii’s history. They also serve as an accessible resource for
those who aren’t able to travel or visit the Palace in person.
In addition to compiling, indexing and digitizing the Junior
League files, we also hosted a public workshop in September
2019 to showcase the importance of digitizing archival
materials. Panelists Doug Askman, Keau George, Alice Guild and
Marcus Ortiz shared information about the digitization process,
offered insights into the stories these historical resources hold,
discussed lessons learned, and provided an understanding of
the value of such projects.
We encourage anyone with an interest in Hawaii’s history and
culture to visit iolanipalace.org/palace-collections/digital-collection
to browse the Junior League files.

Conserving, PRESERVING AND NOW, REPAIRINGStory continued from the cover
In this new season of repairing the Palace, we ask for your
kokua. In addition to repairing the Palace roof, the Coronation
Pavilion and bee hive removal mentioned in previous
communications, we seek your generous support to fund the
following crucial repair and maintenance projects (note the repair costs listed below are estimates):
Replace…
• Etched Glass Windows, $90,000: Damaged by vandalism
in 2017, the original etched glass was created in San
Francisco. In order to replicate this process today, custom
glass must be ordered from Germany and shipped to
an artisan specializing in 19th century techniques. An anonymous donor generously contributed $25,000, but around $65,000 more is needed to complete this project.
• Missing Flagpole, $150,000: When the Palace was being
restored, a flagpole was moved from its original location
to another spot on the roof. Years later, the Palace is still
missing this valuable piece that will help restore it to its
monarchy grandeur.
Restore…
• Palace Locks, $50,000: Specialized contractors must be
commissioned in order to replace and upgrade the original
hardware of the doors to the Palace.
• Sconces, $115,000: During monarchy-era times, these
original architectural features of the Palace would have
been illuminated when guests came to visit alii.
Repair…
• Masonry Pillars and Wall, $50,000: In order to ensure
the Palace stands for the next 100 years and beyond, the
crumbling walls and deteriorating masonry that supports
our structure must be repaired.
• Palace Stairs, $200,000: The Palace’s four flights of stairs
must be repaired in order for Hawaii’s people to have the
opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the monarchy’s
beloved historical figures.
• Kanaina Building Window Treatments (tint and draperies),
$50,000: Window treatments will greatly help to improve
the acoustics of this building, which is utilized by various
Hawaii organizations and groups for community events
and speaking engagements.
Help The Friends of Iolani Palace unlock the possibilities in
2020 by supporting our numerous repair projects by making
a direct donation or becoming a Friends of Iolani Palace
member. No matter how you choose to donate, you’ll be
making a lasting difference in our efforts to share this historic,
one-of-a-kind landmark with future generations of kamaaina
and visitors alike.

MINIDOKA: AN AMERICAN CONCENTRATION CAMPIn observance of Civil Liberties & the Constitution Day, the Judiciary
History Center, Hawaii State Bar Association Civic Education
Committee, The Friends of Iolani Palace, and the National Park
Service presented a special screening of “Minidoka: An American
Concentration Camp” on Monday, January 30.
After seeing “Minidoka: An American Concentration Camp” at
the 2019 Western Museum Association annual conference, we
co-coordinated with the Judiciary History Center to bring a
screening to Hawaii. Hanako Wakatsuki, chief of interpretation
and education for the Minidoka National Historic Site, shared
her valuable experiences working with former incarcerees of
the concentration camp prior to the film which included her
grandparents. Wakatsuki was visiting Hawaii on assignment, which
provided a wonderful opportunity for her to speak about the
research she’s conducted about the camp and to share her story
with the many Hawaii residents of Japanese ancestry.
“Minidoka: An American Concentration Camp” is a moving and
insightful documentary produced for Minidoka National Historic
Site that tells the story of Americans of Japanese ancestry who
were incarcerated in the High Desert of southern Idaho.
The screening took place in the Supreme Court Room at the
Judiciary History Center, where over 90 people gathered together
to learn more about the historical significance of Minidoka.
