Module Title:Suctioning: Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal
SuctioningDefinition: A flexible plastic suction catheter
is inserted into the mouth or nose to remove secretions, fluid, food and secretions from the nose, mouth and airway, reducing the risk of aspiration
Two Areas for Suctioning:OropharyngealNasopharyngeal
SuctioningEquipment necessary for suctioning:
Suction machine: wall or portableWater or Saline
Sterile ContainerSterile GlovesProtective Pad
SuctioningOropharyngeal Airway:A curved plastic or rubber device inserted
into the mouth to the posterior pharynxUsed to keep the airway open in unconscious
patientsOral Airway prevents the tongue from falling
to the back of the throatThe curve holds the tongue forwardNot to be used on those with loose teeth or
recent oral surgery
SuctioningNasopharyngeal Airway:Curved soft rubber device inserted through one
nostrilExtends from the nostril to the posterior pharynx
areaKeeps the tongue off the back of the throatMay be used in conscious patientsMay be used on those with loose teeth or recent oral
surgeryMay be referred to as a nasal trumpetShould not be used on those receiving blood thinners,
with nasal deformity, bleeding disorders or sepsis
SuctioningPatient Positioning:
Conscious Patients Whenever possible position the patient in the
High Fowler’s positionUnconscious PatientIf Hi Fowler’s is not possible, semi-fowler can
be used, or the patient may be turned on their side
SuctioningPreparation for Suctioning:
Correct Pressure:Some suction regulators have an adjustable
pressure settingPressure may be set between 80 and 120 mm
HgRespiratory Therapist or RN will advise you
of the needed settingCrimp the tubing to determine the settings
on your suction machine
SuctioningCatheter measurement for depth of tip:
For safety, measure the plastic suction catheter from the corner of the patient’s mouth to the earlobe on the same side.
Do not insert the catheter more than this distance
When using a Yankauer/tonsil tip catheter, it is not necessary to measure
