A RENEWED REST
The Bahía del Duque's image team, led by Raúl de la Rosa, has undertaken a room renovation project in which a predominance of green hues takes centre
stage. The renewed colonial style that is characteristic of our hotel goes perfectly with the more avant-garde décor in spac-es with modern furnishings.
This transformation is evident in all the hotel´s details, such as the textiles, painting of the walls, and woodwork. The re-newal of all room furnishings and of the accessories, lamps on the bedside tables, desks, mirrors, rugs, etc. breathe an evoc-ative fresh air into the hotel's spaces.

Beauty and tradition inspired the creation of this iconic hotel full of corners to get lost in.
The Hotel Bahía del Duque is a true reflection of nineteenth-cen-tury Canarian architecture with Victorian and Venetian influences. Designed by the renowned architect Andrés Piñeiro, the hotel recreates a small village with independent houses and low-rise buildings which represent emblematic Island constructions in a clear tribute to Canarian cultural traditions.

fundamental.»

A Warm WelcomeInterview with José Miguel Oramas, a receptionist for more than twenty years at Bahía del Duque.
If compared with the human body, one could say that, of all the pieces that make up the hotel, the reception area would definitely be its heart; and the fact of the matter is that it is vital for pro-per daily operations. It is first and last impres-sion that guests have of the Hotel; therefore,
the work done there must be impeccable. José Miguel Oramas knows a lot about that, and his time with the hotel is full of anecdotes and great moments. Now, he takes some time to share with us in this interview.
How long have you been part of the Bahía del Duque’s family? What do you remember about when you started?I don't know the exact date for sure; but,
the other day I was looking through pa-
pers at home and found a pay stub from
1994, so….
I remember myself as a young, 18-year-
old lad just starting out in the Bahía del
Duque as a bellboy... and you know... I was
nervous. Frankly, I was still a kid. I even
had hair back then! Truth be told, I have
fond memories of those early days.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?I’ve always liked the hospitality world; if I
didn't, I would have been doing this for so
long... but, my passion and my desire has
always been to be a musician and, in the
end, I am (I teach string instruments), but
I don't make enough off that to live on.
What does your job involve? Our main task is to welcome the guest as
cordially and kindly as possible. Arrival
and reception at a hotel are, for me, of ut-
most importance for the future of the stay.
What skills does one need to be able to do your job?Apart from welcoming guests, receptio-
nists have other tasks as well. We take
care of the customers' requests in rela-
tionship with their rooms, make wakeup
calls, balance out their accounts, pass
on their messages, answer calls, charge
guests upon check-out, etc. I'm sure I've
probably left something out, but more or
less that's what we do.
Is teamwork important in your job?As a receptionist, being able to work in
a team is fundamental. There are a lot of
little things and it all is easier if you work
together.
How do you go about daily business? In reception, daily business is handled
with a to-do list that acts as our guide du-
ring the different shifts. The morning shift
has a list, the afternoon shift has a list,
and the night shift has one as well.
What do you like most about your job?I love interacting with the customers;
well, I think that's just the way I am. At
work, I try to be as friendly and kind as I
can.
What's one tool that is essential for your work?Calmness. Being able to remain calm in
difficult situations or if clients are a bit
upset. That's why being calm and having
your head on straight are essential tools
in our job.
What do customers value most?Customers value the attention you give to
them, the special details. Our customer
type is unique: both for good and for bad.
How do you apply the Bahía del Duque’s quality standards to your job?In reception, we strictly uphold the hotel's
quality standards. We try to automate the
things we do (especially the three biggest
points: check-in, check-out, and wakeup
calls) as much as possible to be able to
achieve the desired quality standards.
"Being calm and having your head on straight are essential for our job".
Do you think working in a hotel like this one is different from working in other hotels? Why?In a hotel like Bahía del Duque, customer
demands are higher than in other hotels
with less stars. I think that's the difference.
Would you like to share any anecdotes with us?I have a lot, especially considering all the
years I've put in. I could write a book, to
be honest. But, when I was a bellboy –I
was in that position for 17 years– I had
better anecdotes. One client in room 339
got a fruit basket and there were prickly
pears in it. The client, who didn't know
exactly what they were, ate half a prickly
pear with its skin on and went out to the
corridor with his mouth full of thorns and
yelling. I was just passing through the
hall at the time and he tried to explain to
me what had happened. He was German.
I, at the time, didn't speak German and, to
be honest, between his gestures and his
mouth all full of thorns... I couldn't help
but chuckle. It was a funny anecdote,
among many.
Jose Miguel Oramas has been part of the Bahía del Duque’s fami-ly for more than 25 years. He is an exceptional colleague who pro-ves his professionalism, experience, and people skills every time he comes into contact with a guest.

Every year, during the time for them to leave their nest, young cory's shearwaters take flight for the first time towards the sea and are blinded by the lights of the
cities, causing them to fall to the ground, disoriented. The species is most vulnerable at night between October
and November. That is when their biological cycle is in the phase of the young babies leaving the nest, guided by the moon. The light pollution of the urban areas blinds them, tak-ing them off their course towards the sea, their natural hab-itat, and causing them –at times– to collide and fall to the ground. This is a great danger for them because, even if the bird is not injured in the fall, it cannot take flight alone and, thus, could die.
Therefore, Bahía del Duque put together the Night of the Cory's Shearwaters to honor this bird which is native to the Canary Islands. The event took place during the new moon of October. On this night, the main activity was the Family En-vironment Patrol: an event in which kids and adults searched for fallen birds alongside the entity Rumbo Ziday, which spe-cializes in rescuing shearwaters, to release them once again to the skies.
Previously, the families got familiar with what a shearwater is and with their conditions of life on the coast of the Canary Islands thanks to a talk given by Rumbo Ziday in which they were able to see a shearwater for themselves.
Sea Birds: The Most Threatened on the International LevelSea birds are the most threatened group of birds on the international level. More than a third of the 346 species known in all the world live with some type of threat and their popula-tions have been suffering from pronounced de-clines for decades.
the NIGHT of the NIGHT of the cory'sthe cory'sshearwaterSshearwaterS
Citizens' Cooperation: Key in Helping the Shearwater.Citizens’ cooperation is very important, and every day more and more people who see fallen birds alert the emergency services. The protocol to follow is to pick up the bird in a box (not a cage) with good ventilation, to keep it in a quiet place (trying not to make noise around it), and to not feed it or give it water as they only drink sea water. Next, the emergency services must be called and they will come to collect the bird and, if it is not injured, they will throw it back to the sea.
They Only Come to the Coast to Breed.Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) is listed in the Red Book of Birds in Spain as “vulnerable” and the National Catalogue of Threatened Spe-cies classifies it as "of special interest."
30,000 pairs of cory's shearwaters are estimated to exist on the Canary Islands.
Light pollution disorients the cory's shearwater.

Isla Baja: Tenerife's Hidden Treasure

Tenerife is an island of contrasts. Rugged mountains, laurel forests, rough volcanic landscapes, beaches with white sand and black sand, cities steeped in cultural heritage, and charming villages off the beaten path. It is, in short, an island with thousands of corners to be explored.
2726
The diversity of landscapes can be seen in the region known as "Isla Baja," a beau-
tiful place located in the northwest of Tenerife. Made up of the munici-palities of Buenavista del Norte, Ga-rachico, Los Silos and El Tanque, this region's good climate and unique ter-rain make it one of the best places on the island to be in direct contact with nature. Isla Baja invites visitors to discover each and every one of its corners slowly and with their camera in hand. Breath-taking landscapes combine with the calm of small villages that still feature traditional buildings and activities. All of that is linked with the land and the sea, which are ever present in these villages' customs, handcrafts, and cuisine.

Not to be missed…GARACHICO A scenic jewel located next to the sea whose port was, in the past, Tenerife's commercial nucleus. Its historic centre, considered a Cultural Interest Asset, boasts the Gold Med-al of Merit in the Fine Arts due to the great value and state of conservation of its heritage, which dates back to the six-teenth and seventeenth centuries. Its unique natural pools and ponds, known as El Caletón, were formed after a volcanic eruption in the eighteenth century.
CASERÍO DE MASCA Belonging to the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, this hamlet provides some of the best examples of natural Canar-ian architecture. The starting point of numerous trails that go down to hidden coves, this is also one of the places where the handcrafting traditions are best preserved.
CASERÍO DE TENO ALTOA stronghold for the island's rural customs in which the silence and essence of a people who adapted to isolation until not too many decades ago stands out. Said isolation has made it possi-ble for a rich ethnographic legacy to survive, such as the ham-let's clay ovens and its threshing floors – stone structures for threshing wheat. Noteworthy are its traditional rural houses with thick walls of red rock and its excellent goat cheese.
HISTORIC CENTRE OF BUENAVISTA DEL NORTE The historic centre is home to monuments, buildings, and squares from which you can get a glimpse into the way of life of the an-cient inhabitants of Tenerife through different pedestrian routes.
EL TANQUE Its historic centre, especially the El Tanque Bajo area, has a rich architectural heritage from the sixteenth century. The municipality's name, which means "The Tank" in English, is believed to be due to the existence of a pond or tank that provided Garachico with water. More than 60% of its territory represents protected natural areas.

25% Recycled PET
Fuentealta is making strides in the reduction of plastic use and has become the first Canarian bottler whose bottles are 25% recycled poly-ethylene terephthalate plastic (PET). With this step, Fuentealta will be able to reduce the use of more than 100 tons of plastic per year. In ad-dition, the company is one step ahead of Euro-pean regulations that require the use of at least 25% recycled PET in packaging in the year 2025.
Fuentealta: The first Canarian water brand that includes recycled material in its bottles.
The Hotel Bahía del Duque is part of Grupo CIO which holds family businesses and which the Fuentealta water brand is also a part of. Said water is collected
from the snowfalls and rainfalls of Mount Teide, and it trick-les down for more than 30 years.
The water source, located in Vilaflor at 1500 meters above sea level, is inside a protected natural area – and that fact provides our water with unparalleled purity and a light taste.
Grateful for everything that mother nature and our envi-ronment provide us and our Fuentealta brand with, we have drawn inspiration from our surroundings and decided that it's time for change. Our planet needs us.
We are aware of reality; we know that a general awakening is needed. Therefore, at our company we have decided to try to make the world we live in a little better. It's not a question of dropping everything and going to the Amazon to combat deforestation, or of filling our kitchen with a thousand dif-ferent bins for recycling. It's something much simpler; some-thing that is within anyone's reach. It's a question of small steps that, when put together, become something big.
That philosophy has been put into the context of a revolu-tionary visual identity that can be found under the hashtag #HazQueFluya. Because flowing is synonymous to advanc-ing, changing, improving, creating…. #HazQueFluya alludes to precisely that: to doing simple things that can help everything to flow, that can help us all to flow.

A Structured Corporate Social Responsibility Policy. The Corporate Social Responsibility Depart-
ment at Grupo CIO works tirelessly on a busi-ness model that is increasingly more sustaina-ble. That drive to improve our environment can also be seen in Fuentealta through its business culture.
The use of recycled PET is in addition to other actions that Fuentealta has progressive-ly included in its processes, such as its 21% re-duction in PET bottle weight since 2016, a 24% decrease in the plastic of its caps, and regular participation in cleaning campaigns for beach-es and seabeds, among others.
Likewise, since its beginnings, Fuentealta has always been a company that is committed to the island's social development and the pro-motion of healthy lifestyles. In recent years, the company has donated more than 660,000 liters of water to more than 210 solidarity initiatives and sports events.

When we are children, the most important and fun thing about holidays is
that we can do a host of different activ-ities: outdoor activities, water activities, activities with the new friends we meet. We do all this with one thing in mind: to laugh and have fun.
Although there are thousands of ac-tivities and games so that we are never bored, the ones we prefer are the ones that allow us to use our imagination and, if balloons are involved, that's even better! The fact of the matter is that summer just wouldn't be summer with-out balloons – and they don't have to be water balloons to be able to be fun.
When our young Dukes ask us for a fun activity, we know exactly what they need: markers, colored pencils, paper and balloons. The Bahía del Duque ac-tivity organization team has everything our little artists will need to design the craziest, funniest clown.
This is an entertaining activity in which each child will receive a sheet of paper to draw the eyes, the nose, and the mouth of a clown. Later, the clown's face will be stuck to a balloon.
Creativity and fun go hand in hand alongside our activity specialists to help the children bring out their artistic side, socialize, and have a blast while on holiday.
No activity is complete without balloons, and if you get the chance to decorate them, that's even better.

hotel. Era increíble, como un cuento de
hadas.
bares & lounges, tiendas y boutiques,
zumería, café y heladería. Me encantan

sio, spa, retiro wellness…
conocen a mí.
a Luis, Mari Luz, Estrella, Manolo, Roberto,
Mauro, Elena y Lucas.
Por la noche, es más complicado. Siempre
Antonio, Manuel, Silverio, Domingo, Gorge,
David, etc.

I’ve never found a place like Bahía del
Duque."
How and when did you first find out about Bahía del Duque?A good friend who had an apartment in
Los Cristianos was the first person to
tell me about Bahía del Duque 25 years
ago. So, we decided to try this new hotel
and we had our first holidays at Bahía del
Duque in 1994.
What memories do you have of that first visit?I can't really explain why, but as soon as
we got to Bahía del Duque I just loved the
place. It was incredible; like a fairy tale.
That was our first impression! Everyone
was very friendly, polite, helpful, warm…
they helped to make us feel at home. For
me, there is only one destination: Hotel
Bahía del Duque – and more than 25 years
have passed since that first visit.
How many times have you come?I've stayed here more than 80 times, the
equivalent of more than two years' time in
the hotel.
Why do you choose Bahía del Duque for your holidays?I've traveled around the world many times,
but I’ve never found a place like Bahía del
Duque.
What would you highlight about the hotel?I would say that a lot of things are note-
worthy, for example:
The hotel's magnificent eight restaurants,
its five pools, different bars & lounges,
shops and boutiques, juice bar, café, and
ice cream parlor. I love its splendid gar-
dens and its shows in the square every
evening. Plus, they have a fantastic
breakfast, sports facilities, a golden sand
beach, gym, spa, wellness retreat, etc...
you can even stargaze and see the moon
without leaving the hotel! At Bahía del
Duque, you have everything you need to
enjoy a wonderful holiday.
What do you think about the personal attention you receive? The most important thing is that the
hotel's staff really cares about their cli-
ents, they speak with them, they listen
and know what people want. In addition,
they're always open to change. After so
many years, we don't really call it a hol-
iday anymore; it's as if we were returning
home. I know almost everyone and they
know me too. They know what I like and
what I don't like. For example, I don't have
to choose my wine; they do it for me and
their choices always hit the spot!
What is your favorite corner of the hotel? All the hotel: from side to side, from bot-
tom to top… every corner. Its views and its
gardens are incredible.
Where do you normally stay? Do you have a favorite room?I must admit that all the rooms are spec-
tacular; but, if I had to choose, I'd say room
113 or 114, which are near the pool, the
beach, and very close to the Beach Club
and to the Restaurant Bernegal. What's
more, they have large terraces and are
rooms that are very quiet at night.
What is your opinion of our restaurants? We have a couple favorite places. In the
morning, we like to hang out around the
La Zumería area. At midday, we go to the
Beach Club and we always sit at table 28
for lunch. We're amongst our friends there,
as we've known all the staff for a long
time, for example Luis, Mari Luz, Estrella,
Manolo, Roberto, Mauro, Elena and Lucas.
At night, things are a bit more compli-
cated. We always have to choose from
the different restaurants, because all of
them are really good, although right now
we prefer SUA and Alisios Market Food.
I would also like to mention Restaurant
Bernegal, where you can enjoy delicious
breakfasts and buffet dinners with a great
variety. And I can’t forget about the ser-
vice we get there from Antonio, Manuel,
Silverio, Domingo, Gorge, David, etc.
