English 4 Math 4 Science 3 Social Studies 3 Foreign Language 2 Arts 1 Students may be required to take one or more developmental courses, determined by the scores received on the Institutional Placement Tests in English and mathematics. Writing tests are recommended.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR FALL TERM: Direct Admission: Students who demonstrate necessary academic preparation and performance will be admitted directly to the college/program of their choice. Admission criterion varies by program/academic department, but is reserved for students who qualify academically. Generally a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA or higher depending upon chosen major and competitive ACT or SAT test score(s).
University Admission: Students who do not meet the direct admission criteria will be reviewed for admission within the area of their intended major, or general studies for undecided students. Review for admission is based upon a combination of high school cumulative GPA, coursework taken
4
and in progress, improvement and/or consistency in performance and ACT or SAT test score(s).
In addition, The University of Akron is implementing and phasing in a more selective admission standard/criteria over the next few years. Therefore, students whose academic profile is borderline for University admission will be reviewed on an individual basis, by the Admissions Committee, to determine college readiness. Offers of admission will be limited to students whose academic profile and credentials demonstrate promise of academic success at the college level. Letters of recommendation are encouraged for these students and senior year coursework and grades are essential in the review process, as well. Miami University endorses the core curriculum listed at the front of this booklet. Miami expects students to have completed as least two years of the same foreign language. Students who do not meet these standards will not be denied admission if they are otherwise qualified. Instead, they will be required to complete additional courses after they come to Miami. These courses will count toward graduation, and many of them can fulfill other university requirements. They are regular college courses, not remedial courses.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR FALL TERM: Miami conducts a comprehensive, individualized review. We consider 20 academic and contextual factors, including breadth and depth of high school curriculum,
class rank, GPA, standardized test scores, writing ability, leadership, extracurricular involvement, life circumstances, obstacles overcome, socioeconomic status, first generation/legacy status, etc.
