The Saint-Martin metro station, located between the stations of Strasbourg Saint-Denis and République on lines 8 and 9, was inaugurated in 1932. It was closed to the public on September 2, 1939, reopened upon the liberation of Paris and then closed again due to its proximity to the Strasbourg-Saint-Denis station.During Paris' annual all-night cultural event Nuit Blanche 2010, the station hosted "Metroscope, 2010", a performance put on by the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) on the Pont de Sèvres-bound line 9 platform. The opening hours for this performance were extended to the next two evenings. This platform has also occasionally been used for ad campaigns and film sets.

Programming/possible future uses: given the site context, projects must be compatible with the operation and maintenance of metro lines 8 and 9 on the Pont de Sèvres-bound side of the line 9 platform. In particular, proposals should take into account the tunnel’s ventilation and ventilator operation, technical equipment, maintenance of a safety walkway on the platform and access to the platform for occasional maintenance needs. Depending on the proposals, public access building upgrades for this space may be required. Type of property transfer proposed: temporary occupation agreement.Owner: RATP. Cadastral reference: under the Boulevard Saint-Martin 75003 – 75010 Paris.Street-level surface area: an entrance at the Porte Saint-Martin at the corner of the Théâtre de la Renaissance (maintenance access) and an entrance at 32 Boulevard Saint-Martin (Salvation Army access). The other entrances were removed or replaced by ventilation grates (two to the south of the Place de la Porte Saint-Martin – western end of the station, and one on the boulevard Saint-Martin – eastern end of the station).

Existing structure(s) This station includes two metro lines with superimposed parallel platforms. The spaces have half-vaulted ceilings while a central openwork partition separates the two platforms for the same line. The parallel platforms are 105 meters long and 4.6 meters wide, each serviced by entrances on either end of the platform. The station has two entrances, each equipped with a ticket room to the east and west of the platforms. The platforms for lines 8 and 9 are approximately 7.8 meters and 13.2 meters, respectively, below street level.
Current occupation In 1999, the RATP refurbished the station’s eastern entrance area into a homeless shelter run by the Salvation Army. These spaces have housed a day reception for homeless people since 2001.In its western section, the entrance spaces as well as the Balard-bound line 8 platform are occupied by night teams in charge of inspecting civil engineering structures. Ventilation equipment is installed on a central section of the Créteil-bound line 8 platform. There are also machine rooms on the Montreuil-bound line 9 platform. Only the Pont de Sèvres-bound platform is completely free and proposed as a site for the Reinventing Paris 2 call for projects. However, occasional access may be required at times for maintenance purposes.
