St Thomas the Apostle Church Page 2 Peoria Heights, Illinois
It is with great joy that we received word that
Fulton Sheen will be beatified on December
21. Let us all give thanks to God and join in the
excitement of this upcoming event.
Time is short and there is much to do between
now and the date of the Beatification. If you
are interested in attending, you can request
tickets by visiting celebratesheen.com. This is
the only place to go to request tickets. I know
that there will be many people who will want to
come, and the Diocese will try to
accommodate as many people as possible.
We also have good news to report regarding
contributions to our sanctuary renovation. We
received a lead gift from a donor willing to
match up to $150,000 toward this
project. Since the night of the progressive
dinner, we have received additional pledges or
contributions which bring us up to $107,000. If
we are able to raise donations sufficient to
match the lead gift, we will have $300,000. I
am very grateful for the outpouring of
generosity for this project.
Every parishioner received a letter inviting you
to make an end-of-year gift for our Annual
Fund. These donations will be directed to our
school subsidy in order to keep Catholic
education affordable for al l our
students. Donors can direct their gifts to the
sanctuary project if they wish.
God bless you!
- Msgr Gray

Church Parking Street parking at St. Thomas is shared with our
neighbors and residents around the
parish. Recently, some of our neighbors have
expressed difficulties parking around their
homes at weekend Mass times.
You are encouraged, if at all possible, to park
in our parking lots when coming to
Mass. Parking is available in our main lot in the
backj, around the old gym, and also in the
small lot north of the Church.
Thank you for your attention.
St Thomas the Apostle Church Page 4 Peoria Heights, Illinois
Some of you may wonder, like I did, what exactly the St. Vincent de Paul
Society does. The core work of the Society is home visits. We visit the
homes of people near us who have requested assistance, and in these
person-to-person encounters, we offer a listening ear, emotional and
spiritual support, and material help.
Who does the St. Vincent de Paul Society help?
Here are just a few examples:
A 35 year old woman whose husband just died
A father, caring for his 22 year old son with special needs, who lost his
job
A grandmother, raising 4 grandchildren, whose refrigerator stopped
working
An elderly couple struggling to cover a needed prescription
What are some of the things provided to these neighbors?
Food
Rent assistance
Help with utilities
Furniture
Referrals to community services
Prayers…and hope
What can St. Thomas parishioners do to help?
Contribute generously to the monthly collection the first Sunday of
each month. Checks gladly accepted!
Donate to the food pantry. Boxes in the rear of the church. Already
through September, we have served 3710 hungry clients– a 20%
increase in demand over 2018.
Join the St. Vincent de Paul Society and help minister to those in our
community who are in need. The demand is very real and very
pressing. Many neighbors are lacking in resources and outside
support. An illness, a car accident, a job layoff, etc. disrupts their
delicate balance and pushes them to the financial brink.
Thank you all for your support which allows us to faithfully help our
neighbors!
Happy holidays,
Linda Waible, St. Vincent de Paul Society member
Parish Open House This year our annual gathering after
Masses will be Saturday, December
7, and Sunday, December 8. We ask
for volunteers to help set up and
serve food.
This year the festivities include a new Advent
Market in the school, as well as our Women’s
Guild Cookie Sale and the Sisters’ Crafts and
Gifts.
Please call the Parish Office (688-3446) or
Denise Tascher (693-8633) to volunteer.
For those 70 1/2 years old Good News: if you have reached 70 1/2 and
you would like to help St. Thomas Parish, the
government requires you to take out a certain
amount from your IRA each year and be
subject to federal tax. However, the law allows
you to donate this amount directly to the parish
during 2019, and have it distributed free of
federal income tax!
This is a wonderful opportunity to help St.
Thomas. Please talk with your tax advisor or the
company holding your retirement account to
benefit you and St. Thomas Parish.
Changes to Martha Group
Beginning November 25th We will begin using a new email system to plan our Funeral Lunches
November 25. Many of you have already provided your email address.
If you have not done so, now is the time to let us know if you are able to
provide food, or to serve a meal for families at the time of a funeral.
Please send your name, email and phone number to
[email protected] or [email protected].
It will be easier than ever for you to help care for our families by serving or
providing a dish for funeral luncheons.
