Greetings:This is my firstannual report asPresident, or, asone could refer toit, my "report

card" to the Boardof Directors andmembers.

Corporate Status: We have negoti-ated with the State and Federal officials

on a continuous basis since October 1995

in connection with financial and corpo-

rate status matters, and this persistence

has paid off. Our corporations have sur-

vived.In August 1996, our final negotiation

meeting with the Internal RevenueService and a representative of Colorado

National Bank resulted in an agteemenV

time payment schedule in settlement of

the tax lien on the NJI property. This has

worked out favorably for the NJI. Cumu-

lative funds from existing accounts, pro-

ceeds from the sale ofthe property at 19

North Union, and a fund drive asking

members for help with the IRS indebted-

ness have enabled us to decrease the bal-

ance due to an amount that can be paid

by the USJA on a monthly basis'

Overhead Expenses: While wecontinue to monitor our staff duties andvolume of services, efforts are beingmade to reduce expenses in all areas.During the past year, full-time staff hasbeen reduced from 17 to 6. We still havethe need for our present Part-timeemployees in the areas of secretarial,printing, technical writing, and computerservices. Careful evaluation ofall posi-tions are continuously conducted; the vol-ume of services and revenue generatedwill determine personnel needs.

Fund Raising Programs: Severalfund raising programs are currently being

explored for long term revenues. We havefive of these programs being actively pre-pared for marketing:. Vsa/Master Card Program. Health Care Program (Individual and

Family). Greeting Cards. Labels and Stickers. Publications

Additional programs to implement assoon as marketing surveys are completed:. lnng Disnnce Carrier. National Training Center Renovation' Equipment Endorsements

The USJA camp and clinic Programsconducted by our Executive Directorhave generated $73,561 in annual mem-berships, Life Memberships, certifica-tions, and promotions. His expensestotaled approximately $7,000 for traveland lodging, resulting in a $66,561 profitso far this year. Ed has scheduled clinicsfor the remainder of 1996, which willincrease the above revenue.

Corporate Reorganization: Afterlong consideration and consultation withUSJA members and attorneys, it wouldbe in the best interest of the USJA to dis-solve the National Judo Institute. TheBoard of Directors has approved thisaction. The properties would be renamed"USJA National Training Center."Currently, the USJA and NJI have thesame Board members.

Renovation/deferred maintenance onthe Training Center will be accomplishedduring 1997, hopefully prior to CampBushido in July. The renovation willinclude the interior as well as exterior,and during renovation, members will beoffered the opportunity for stewardshipsof one or more square feet of space. Aflyer outlining this program is includedwith this mailing. The office spaces inthat building will be occupied by USJAstaff and training facilities, and the pre-

sent office space at 21 North Union willbe leased out as income revenue.However, some of the workshop space onthe first floor of 2l North Union will bemaintained in its present location'

Membership: In his message to Youin this newsletter, Edward N. Szrejter, ourExecutive Director, has given you thegood news regarding our increased mem-bership.

Promotion Board Procedures:Standards and criteria for senior dan pro-motions have been drafted, and copiesforwarded to the Chairman of thePromotion Board. The Board of Directorshas approved these procedures.

Life MembershiPs: The cost ofUSJA Life Memberships will increase to$200 beginning February l,1997. A a, )notice outlining the details is contained in\-/this newsletter. It is imperative that mar-keting programs are implemented toencourage membership growth. We mustincrease our base membershiP to anattractive marketing base for the purposesof product endorsements and other rev-enue-generating projects. LifeMemberships are vital to our organizationas they represent a level of membershipthat will not fluctuate (except in the caseof death). The increase in the LifeMembership fee will also provide rev-enue with which to mail publications toall members.

of 1997 along with the third edition ofthe USJA Jujitsu Manual. Our thanks toeveryone working on these and otherUSJA projects.

Make plans now to attend one of ourUSJA summer camps. Have fund drivesto raise the necessary fees, and don't for-get that the registration of ten students fora camp allows one student to attend forfree. I have been asked, "why so manysummer camps?" I can only answer thatquestion with another that was posed tome. "Why don't we have camps closer tous than Camp Bushido in ColoradoSprings?" We do try to accommodateeveryone. Ten successful camps wereheld this past summer, and I recently had

a request for yet another in the NewEngland States. I will work to provide theinstructors if someone volunteers to bethe host.

Forty-three USJA clinics were con-ducted in various parts ofthe country inthe last twelve months, and we havelocated many qualified instructors whohave agreed to do clinics on almost anysubject. Please contact me for details onholding a clinic at your club. You caneven request a specific instructor-we tryto please.

I look forward to the challenges that1997 will bring, and I am certain thatwith your help, the USJA will continue tobe the most progressive judo organizationin the country.

ative method of teaching. Forinstance, there are ten prob-

lems on an arithmetic exami-

nation, we missed three. The teacher marks

three red marks and a great big 7O% and agreat big "D." That's teaching? Wouldn't it

be better to mark the seven correct answersand encourage the person to study the threewrong ones; then give the student the right

to retest and get ten right?

This is a very briefexample of positivereinforcement inteaching judo. Hereare a few other ideas,all that thrs limitedspace allows, whichare relevant to thispositive method ofteaching.

It is amazing howoften one encounters ajudoman who has

been so negatively taught that he hasclosed his mind to all instruction, and isconsequently incapable of advancing intechnical ability. He has been exposedonly to criticism, so he ignores all teach-ing. Positive teaching could have helpedhim.

Often, when visiting another dojo, wefind the emphasis on throwing the otherguy down and not being thrown down

ourselves, rather than on the study andlearning of the principles ofjudo.

Granted, adequate time should begiven to competitive training, but itshould not be stressed to the point whereone feels embarrassed to be thrown byone's fellow students in normal randori.

Any top competitor will tell you thatthe blocking of a throw is learned best bythe man who is thrown by that throwmany times by good players, rather thanby the person who concentrates ondefense. The best defense is an automaticdel'ense and a positive offense. Positiveteaching can help to build that effectiveoffense faster.

Too many judoka look at their fellowplayers as cannon fodder, rather than asfine precision tools necessary to the prac-tice of their trade. They think nothing ofcrudely smashing a player of lesser skill,rather than using the chance to practicetechnique. That same person would notleave a fine saw or other tool out in theelements to rust. Why then unnecessarilyabuse the tool ofthejudoka's trade, histraining partner? Training and learning in

What I want to emphasize is whatshould be obvious. The person who isencouraged by a repeated positiveresponse on the part of the teacher willlearn more arithmetic. The correct actionof the student will be positively re-inforced by praise, and will be strength-ened and improved.

How then can we apply this principleof positive reinforcement to Judo? Here'san example. First, we begin by lookingfor any correct movement the student isdoing in practice. Perhaps we tell himthat he has good right hand action, and inthe next repetition to concentrate on theplacement of his left foot. Of course, hisright hand may then go crazy because heis concentrating on his left foot, but for-get his right hand and watch his foot.Find some improvement in his left footand then go back to his hand. The leftfoot may again regtess by the end of thepractice, but the student will have learnedwhere his right hand belongs and wherehis left foot belongs. He may not be able

to do it perfectly, but the secure knowl-

edge that you, the teacher, will be there to

compliment his attempts will encouragehim to try harder. Once he begins to get

judo cannot be done successfully in aselfish way, without regard for one's fel-low players, for they are necessary forjudo to exist.

It is also important that one should feelreal pleasure when caught by a lesser

player in a skillful move. For if one istraining well with others, the relativelevel of the group and the skilled techni-cal base will rise. Positive teaching willhelp build a good dojo spirit becausethose who are positively taught will helpnewer students in the s:rme way.

All of this enters into the positive

method ofteachingjudo, serving as pro-tection for the less skillful against thepossible exploitation by better players.This method also allows better players tocombine competitive training methodswith the learning of principle in a posi-tive and encouraging way, and makes itpossible for a truly strong dojo espritd'corps to grow. Often a top player failsto realize that his colleagues are the oneswho helped him to the top because theyare the ones who took the falls. Withoutthem, he would be nothing. After hebecomes a champion, without them andtheir respect, he is again nothing.

The more people you encourage with apositive attitude and a safe attitude toplay, the more champions will emerge foryou to teach.

With a real talent, there is very littleyou can say of a negative nature, buf withall ofthe average players, and these arethe ones that your champion needs as abase, you should concentrate on the posi-tive aspects of their work and encouragethem in every way. Remember: practicingwith even the lowest ranked player is bet-ter than practicing with no one at all.[re6ffi

What values will judo impart to mY

child? The objective of ajudo dojo, or

practice hall, is to be a miniature model

of the outside world. The tasks, chal-

lenges, and conflicts we face in the real

world are experienced on a much smaller,

and much more manageable scale.We learn to cooperate and care for

another human being. Judo is an art and

sport which requires practice in pairs.

Without a partner willing to share him or

herself, we do not learn and progress.

From this we also learn sportsmanshipand cooperation, as well as meaningfuland constructive relationshiPs.

We learn that today's defeat is no rea-

son to give up the battle. We pick our-

selves up, dust ourselves off, and learn

from our mistakes. We learn to strive for

self-improvement while keeping failures

in proper perspective.Every student of judo imagines when

they will receive their Black Belt. Muchlike the journey from kindergarten to col-

lege, judo is about learning and applyingwhat we learn, over and over again.Finally, one day we receive a collegedegree, or a Black Belt. In either case, we

find that we have not reached an end, but

have only fully prepared ourselves for a

new beginning! We learn that goals and

challenges are obtainable.Self-lmprovement: Many martial

arts advertise the self-confidence andself-esteem building aspects of the mar-

ence success in helP-ing a student become

more self-confident, and better prepared

to face the real world.A child learns self-respect and a sense

of dignity through his or her increasedself-understanding. This frees your child

to respect the personalities, rights, and

differences of others.Judo has no age barriers; no sex or

race barriers. In judo, everyone starts off

as an equal. It is how one deports him or

herself from within and from withoutwhich sets one person apart from another.

Stress Management: Mostresearchers in child development will tellyou that your child experiences stress to

the same degree and intensity as an adult.

The stresses may not seem important toyou, but through a child's eyes they are

very serious. We know stress affects our

work, home, and social life. It is no dif-

ferent for your children. Exercise, in

addition to making one more physically

fit, is known to relieve stress. This is why

many parents report a noticeable increase

in school grades during the first few

months a child participates in judo'

Anger Management: We learn onourjourney from childhood to adulthoodthat anger is an acceptable human emo-

tion. It is how we express this anger that

often "lands us in hot water"'For some

children and adolescents, the proper

expression ofour anger is, perhaps, our

most difficult lesson on the road to

becoming an adult.

In judo, we find that anger which is

not properly channeled will, in the end,

allow us to defeat ourselves. Anger prop-

erly utilized and channeled will provide

the extra energy and motivation needed

to achieve success!Traditions: The young learn from

the old. Judo is an art of experience much

as life is. We learn to respect and value

those who are further along the path than

we may be; those whose wealth of expe-

rience is greater than our own.We bow to each other in judo. A bow

has many subtle meanings apart from its

main theme. The main theme however, is

what is most important. When a bow is

executed, it is a physical demonstrationof respect, an acknowledgment of anotherhuman being. In judo, a bow is a reflec-

tion of the spirit of the one who is per- Jforming it. It should not be seen as a

religious act or construed as groveling.

The Social Benefits of Judo:Judo people love to sweat and throw each

other around the room. People who train

together develop a sense of belonging,and an involvement in something mean-

ingful to them.Wherever you travel as a student of

judo you are always welcomed into

another school like a long lost relative. In

today's society, this is tmly unique.Judo people have learned to cooperate

and help each other so that everyone ben-

efits. They will spend days of their free

time working on projects or helping at

tournaments for no personal gain, but

simply for the sheer joy of the experi-

ence.The founder ofjudo felt that each stu-

dent ofjudo, who properly learns the"way," will not only benefit the society in

which he presently lives, but will also

benefit a hundred generations to come!

The bylaws of the United States JudoAssociation established the regular LifeMembership fee at $400.00. For severalyears however, the USJA has offered anintroductory $100 LM fee to new mem-bers in order to increase our permanentLife Membership base.

On February l,1997, the LifeMembership fee will begin its incremen-tal increase towards $400.00, and the newfee as of thar date will be $200.00.

To encourage continued support for theprogram, a credit voucher for $50.00, tobe submitted with the initial payment,will be allowed during the months ofFebruary, March, and April 1997. Thesevouchers will be obtained from coachesor by calling the National Headquarters
