ASE Foundation Breaks Fundraising Records at the 2015 Scientific Sessions! By Tom Ryan, MD, FASE 2015-2016 Annual Appeal Committee Chair
Foundation donors: you are the heart of ASEF! This year at the ASE Scientific Sessions in Boston, you raised over $90,000 to support the 2015 Annual Appeal. By visiting us at the Foundation Booth, you made direct donations of over $9,500 for echo. At the 6th Annual Research Awards Gala, your generosity provided echo research with over $65,000, and participants in the Heeling Hearts Scavenger Hunt raised over $16,000 for student and fellow travel grants and scholarships. Thank you so much for your support. Whether you bought an ASEF wristband, donned your “I Donated!” sticker or ASEF supporter ribbons, participated in the Heeling Hearts Scavenger Hunt & After-Party, or attended the 6th Annual Research Awards Gala while at the Sessions, your support gives ASEF the means to standardize and enhance cardiac-ultrasound around the world.
For those of you who didn’t attend the Gala this year, we had a wonderful event, honoring luminaries from the association and raising needed funds for research. A large portion of these proceeds were donated by our terrific table captains. These individuals provided leadership by generously giving to support the event. Up from only two captains in 2014, the Foundation had 11 Research Awards Gala Table Captains in 2015! The Foundation has recognized its Gala Table Captains on page 5, where their photos and institutions are listed. We hope that you will join us in Seattle for ASE 2016, where our 7th Annual Research Awards Gala will take place! If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a Table Captain, please contact [email protected].
The Foundation’s Annual Appeal Committee is proud to announce that three new volunteers have joined the team: Merri Bremer, RN, RDCS, FASE from the Mayo Clinic, Ben Byrd, III, MD, FASE from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Georgeanne Lammertin, MBA, RCS, RDCS, FASE from the University of Utah Healthcare Center. Welcome and thank you for joining our effort to fundraise for echocardiography!
I also want to take this time to thank the Foundation’s generous supporters, Lantheus Medical Imaging, Inc. and Siemens Healthcare, who sponsored the Heeling Hearts Scavenger Hunt and After-Party. Their sponsorship ensured that 100% of event proceeds will be utilized for the provision of scholarships and travel grants to sonographers and fellows.
Thank you also to Elsevier, who sponsored two travel grants for research presenters at the Sessions. I would also like to express my gratitude to the National Board of Echocardiography, who provided the photo-booth for the Research Awards Gala, and to TomTec Imaging Systems, an ongoing supporter of the Foundation’s endeavor to provide travel grants to researchers.
We are about halfway through this year’s Annual Appeal; our overall goal is $225,000 and we’ve raised 70% thus far. We were really successful in Boston but the fundraising effort can’t stop, we need your continued support to help us reach our Annual Appeal goal.
Thank you for your support, everyone!

“Receiving the ASE Foundation travel grant was a great honor and allowed me to attend the ASE Scientific Sessions in Boston to present my research. I learned
a great deal in the education sessions regarding current echocardiographic practices for specific lesions such as Transposition of the Great Arteries and coronary anomalies. I was able to network with leaders in the field of pediatric echocardiography, and begin relationships that will lead to ongoing research and professional collaboration. Attending the ASE Scientific Sessions made these educational opportunities and collaborative relationships possible and will subsequently allow me to continue to grow and develop in the field of pediatric echocardiography.”
Ricardo Fonseca, MBBS, MHA
Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
“I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to the American Society of Echocardiography for helping me to fund
part of my trip to attend the 26th Annual Scientific Sessions ASE 2015 in Boston, MA. As a PhD candidate, investigating the appropriate use of cardiac imaging, this conference was not only a great opportunity to look at what was happening in a quickly evolving field, but it was the best occasion to present my research. I had the unique opportunity to meet the most influential doctors and researchers in my field and to have a chat with them. This was, probably, the most exciting part of my trip: exchanging perspectives and ideas, leading to a wider understanding about my research. I was given very helpful feedback about the current research and several great ideas about future directions in which to take my work. This feedback helped me to identify a variety of future studies that had not been considered yet. I hope the Foundation continues to support researchers with these types of grants in the future…the opportunity to interact with more people who are interested in our topics improves the quality of our research and helps us find answers to our innumerable questions.” n
