during the year 2015 the fPt Industrial company had seen far-reaching

changes that have affected also the whole testing area starting from the

headquarter in turin: a real revolution, represented mainly by communication

and being global, the factors that are getting our society extremely dynamic

and are pushing the companies to compete in every sector, starting from their

organization. today, to be a leader all the experiences offered by a company

from the product to the service have to be focussed on the customer: it

is not sufficient to have a performing engine with a good quality to sell; to

be competitive the customer is looking for a complete range of products

with reduced development costs, with an aggressive time to market, plus

a professional and timely after sales support. to meet all these needs the

testing is renewing exploiting its own resources. a strong boost had been

given to all the activities that are getting the Center more efficient every

day under every point of view: better performing cells and higher speed for

the tests. the renewal is aimed towards the flexibility in the development

of new technologies for the engines and the driveline, like the introduction

of methane cells for the CNg technology. the testing in turin is not only

dedicated to diesel engines, but it is also developing gas engines, for the

future “blue corridors”, motorways with the infrastructure for heavy trucks

with lNg (liquid natural gas); for this reason was taken a branch of the fiat

research Center and a technical Center in the south of Italy, at foggia. a huge

investment has been made on this new technologies for new emission levels

- Euro VI Step D-E and Stage V - and for hybrid and only electric propulsion

with the installation of the “Powertrain” testing cell, dedicated to all these

activities. anyway the more complex but efficient renewal is the cultural

one, the one that makes people believe and live the change as a necessary

part to overcome the challenges to which a global world of communication is

submitting us every day. as far as this small internal revolution is concerned

we from the testing are distinguishing ourselves in between the best technical

realities for the development of powertrain worldwide.

CNH Industrial Village, in cooperation with the company HRX - that starting from 2012 collaborates with Iveco in the organization of motorsport events, training and safe driving courses for cars and industrial vehicles - inaugurated the new year by offering the customers an interesting opportunity: Mission Experience! Mission Experience is an event fully free of charge offered to customers who have the desire to test the new Iveco daily vehicle already fitted. at his arrival at the Industrial Village the guest is invited to attend a preparatory briefing, during which the demo-driver - an instructor pilot of the team HRX, who remains in support also during the test drive - informs him about the driving modes of the vehicle, finalized to obtain the optimum performance in terms of safety, reliability and consumption. the subsequent stage regards the tests on the vehicle which are carried out in two locations: in the areas of the CNH Industrial Village and ‘on road’, where the technical characteristics of the new Daily must also be highlighted, compared to the previous version and to the vehicles sold by competitors. the initial mission is to increase the appreciation of the customer for the characteristics of the vehicle together with the development of driving sensitivity through tests, that are capable of creating and spreading a culture of road safety and cost-effectiveness. the test drives are divided between static tests (load optimization and maximum volume exploitation of the van versions) and tests capable to highlight the dynamic performance of the vehicle (correct steering, slalom between cones and reverse parking). after the above tests have been performed, there is the final mission: to drive the vehicle. the guest will drive the vehicle on an external track of about 15 Km to test its acceleration, hill starting, consumption and its behavior in case of sudden brake, all this of course in full safety conditions. and that’s not all: in addition to the test drive, the guest - thanks to a technical guided tour - has the opportunity to increase the knowledge of the facility as well as of the historical gallery.

“a fantastic initiative. It was the first time that I have had

the opportunity to test a commercial outfitted vehicle with

automatic transmission: a beautiful and smooth gearbox!

this puts one in the mood to change! at the Village we

were welcomed excellently; the facility is fantastic and at the

“mission experience is an excellent initiative which has given me

the opportunity to test an already fitted vehicles, the right product

that is not going to give unpleasant surprises: a real investment for my

company. I’ve never tried before a similar experience: sometimes you

buy a vehicle to be fitted, but then, once it is complete, you recognize

during its daily use that it is not the right one, not very indicated…

a big problem”.

the Turin Testing Center of fPt Industrial is considered one of the excellences worldwide for the development and certification

of engines and advanced after treatment systems but also for the development of axles and gearboxes, so for the clients belonging

to the group so for the non-captive customers. since 2014 was started a process of renovation that is leading to a radical change

of the area where experimentation and development will be at “zero environmental impact”. here transformation and change are

fundamental to succeed in our intent: to innovate innovation! we are dedicating great commitment and energy to involve and motivate

all our employees, who must be able to adapt to the continuous changings of our surroundings imposed by a constant survey of the

market and the competitors. our studies started with very simple innovations like the strategic use of existing technology and then

evolving, modifying internal working methods, innovating the tools, the every-day work procedures and renewing the center. all this is

possible putting always into question the traditional procedures and trying new options. on the site, which covers an area of 28.000

m2, are working around 400 person - about 265 white collars and about 135 blue collars - on three shifts, always monitoring all the

activities and ready to intervene in operational dynamics and the machines in real time.

In turin, inside the historical grounds of sPa, ala di stura - today CNh Industrial - a few meters distant from the Industrial Village, is a site at the top of the powertrain sector: the Turin Testing Center of fPt Industrial. the fervent and constant dynamics belonging to a life style planned around innovation and experimentation are reported by Massimo Tortorici, Engineering Services & Prototype Manager and his team.

SPECIal bENChESat the testing have been created and installed 5 special benches aimed to reduce as far as possible the physical tests on road: the climatic-barometric chamber, with the

instruments and controlling systems most avant-garde in europe: here it is possible to set-up and reproduce climatic conditions between minus 40 to plus 40 degrees, and

altitudes from zero to 4000 meters, controlling temperature and humidity; the climatic cell for the start tests and emission analysis at cold temperature until -45°C; the

semi-anechoic chamber, equipped with microphones and avant-garde instrumentation for the test and analysis of engine noise, which is used to capture the engine noise of

the whole range of fPt Industrial; one cell dedicated to the development of hybrid light vehicles equipped with the system “battery simulator” and a last cell where engine

are tested with maximum inclinations of 45° in all positions to simulate the extreme applications of fPt Industrial engines. “optimizing the resources and procedures under

the banner of sustainability”: the bigger part of the machines is prepared for the recovery of the energy which is produced during the tests, for a total of 1.700.000 kwh

per year ; the final mission is to raise the efficiency and to reduce the consumption of primary resources thanks also to intervention on the buildings, like led lighting and

solar system or installations to reduce the sanitary water consumption. thanks to this reasoning, transformed in facts, fPt is the leader in the sector of industrial engines.

Roberto Calosso, Technical Services Manager

Giuseppe Bonamassa,Facility Manager

tESt bENChESIn our site there are 86 test benches for different typologies of

development and durability tests, suitable for engines for on-road

and off-road applications, marine, power generation, gear boxes

and axles of all kind. In one year around 300 engines and 150 front

and rear axles are tested, but also a large number of prototypes

that varies between 200 and 300 units which are destined to the

prototypal vehicles of our customers. Beside the powertrain we

carry out tests on specific components, after-treatments-systems

and gearbox parts for about 150 units a year. In the center we

are testing the whole range of engines of the group on 50 engine

test benches meanwhile for the validation of axles and gearboxes

there are 33 test benches with one special high dynamic bench

called Transfer Box.

MEthaNE tEChNOlOGY (CNG)the year 2015 had marked two very important stages for

the growth of the potential of the testing Center of turin:

the introduction of the methane technology (CNg) and the

advanced system of wCm (World Class Manufacturing). thanks

to the introduction of a compressor and a dedicated line,

the testing is not only focused on the development of diesel

engines but is opening up to methane gas technology with

important future developments of that range. adopting some

best practice of wCm as, for example, the introduction of a

suggestion system, had given the opportunity to involve in the

improvement a high number of persons and in the future it will

be the mover for improvements in efficiency and processes of

the entire center. PROtOtYPESour prototypes are often the first visit card that the customer

receives having defined the specifications of the engines with the

engineering. therefore it has to be perfectly carried out in every

detail. following to this, in the last two years, we have worked

a lot to reduce the delivery time of the prototypes from the

order entry to the delivery with a sharp cut on the timeframe

of 36%. this reduction of the delivery time was obtained without

detriment of quality. It was possible thanks to a review of many

processes inside and outside the department, review that actually

is engaging the whole testing area and is extended to the entire

product development.

Pierfrancesco Rizzo, Virtual Validation Labs Manager

vIRtual PROtOtYPES aND 3D PRINtINGthe complexity of the engines is getting much higher, just

10 years ago there were many mechanic engines without

controlling unit and for the electronic ones it was sufficient to

set (calibrate) a thousand of variables to dominate the whole

functions of an engine. today these variables are nearly 50.000

and so it is impossible that a person can be able to control

and calibrate them all. to reduce time and developing costs,

improving the quality of the calibration and the product, but

also for the simulation of the engine’s and vehicle’s behavior, the

testing facility is investing in virtual and simulation technology.

the new laboratory hIl (Hardware in the Loop) is just one step

in this direction.

Abbatino Cinzia,General Services

DIaMOND POINtSstarting from 2014 we are continuously working to receive our

clients at our best: we are a showcase for the public and this is

why we are keen of every person coming out of the center with

the idea of having visited something excellent; at every step our

guest is getting aware that at the testing we have diamond points,

rare jewels. In this way we make sure that they are talking always

about us with amazement, getting us proud of the environment

we are working in.

Luca Pinna,ICT Manager

fPt INDuStRIal “tEStING DaY”an employee who feels involved, will pay more attention to any possibility of efficiency improvement,

quality performance in every step of the production and activities he has to carry out. to make

this happen, the staff (operators, technicians, employees and engineers) must have at their disposal

innovative solutions, like for example, synoptic view, autopilot, smart backup, electronic diary of the

cell and video camera inside the testing bench to facilitate the work they had been assigned to, but

also receiving the appropriate training. to reach outstanding results the commitment of the whole

team is necessary. only determination and continuous involvement of the complete staff will lead

to top performance and quality in every part of the testing. we have introduced “mobile terminals”

- special company mobile devices - for the major part of the staff, including the operators; a laser

projector for various company communications has been installed; we have introduced touch screen

monitors, synoptic view and many other innovations, also a company Social Network. But as far as

communication is concerned, the human contact is still the most important and motivating one.

therefore it is a daily commitment, with personal dialogue or team talk, leading every six months to

an event where the whole testing staff is involved and which is celebrated in the Conference room

of the Industrial Village: the Testing Day.Claudio Chianale, HR Manager

The Industrial Village is one of the largest exhibition and commercial places in Europe, bringing

together the best of the industrial production. Inside the futuristic showroom of 8.000 m²

besides showcasing the CNH Industrial products, as construction and agricultural machinery,

trucks, busses, special vehicles and engines, every day are carried out meetings and events,

which need a special setting. Valter Morando is the one who is charged with the vehicles

generally speaking but also with the studied arrangement of all the vehicles on display, keeping

in mind so the visual but also the needs of the client who rents a exposition area. Let us learn

vehicles, 18 construction machines on tracks and wheeled, for the agricultural part we have 8 tractors, one combine, one forager and a baler. then there is one

bus, 2 special vehicles and 7 engines, which have a dedicated area. my ten-year experience allows me to manage every vehicle of the CNH Industrial group.

In fact, my job is to control every single vehicle or engine starting from the reception and to agree with the brand the type of vehicle to be exposed, the layout

and the turnover. the next step is to trace and track the place in the showroom where the vehicle has to be located. then I organize the cleaning and finishing

of the vehicles and also their rotation has been programmed. the same controlling procedure is made when the vehicles leave the Village.

be exhibited and their subsequent recovery. Beyond the events, the vehicles on display

inside are regularly moved every 5 days, the external ones every 30 days. In addition to

the setups, if there are test drives planned on the track, then I support the customers for

the realization of the circuit and of the safety and technical issues. It can also happen that I

must relate to the Orecchia dealership for performing test drives on the track using vehicles

which the customer is interested to purchase.

them, it’s like to travel backwards in time, a charming and fantastic experience. our collection

currently is consisting of 42 vehicles, all restored and in working order! I start them at least

once a month to verify the state they are in, to do the vehicle setup and if necessary I take

them to Iveco orecchia workshop for repair. every day, the historic vehicles are cleaned by

an external company of which I am the supervisor. with regard to the entry or exit from the

Village, the procedure is analogous to that of the other brands’ vehicles, about which I have

spoken before. an interesting facet of the work with the historic vehicles also consists in their

recovery; I follow and organize their restoration: about 2 vehicles per year.

CASE Construction Equipment, the full-liner manufacturer of construction machinery on global scale, has recently

presented his D-Series range of crawler excavators. The line-up includes 10 models from 13 to 50 tons.

The new D-Series offers increased productivity, comfort, safety and lower operating costs.

Among those models, the CX300D is typical European category model. Like the other models of the D-Series, the

CX300D is fitted with the proven Smart Hydraulic System (SHS) with improved performances, raising to a superior level

control, comfort and precision of the operations.

The operator works in a safe cabin (ROPS and FOPS 2 level) with an avant-garde cockpit that offers a comfortable and

quiet environment. The new ergonomic seat with pneumatic suspension and various adjustable positions is fitting for all

sizes of operator. The color-screen monitor, in addition to other parameters enables the operator to see the pictures of

two video-cameras (side and rear view) for a complete awareness of the excavator’s operating environment.

The faster cycle times obtained thanks to new and more efficient hydraulics and increased weight are contributing to

improve productivity and lifting force. The operating costs are particularly low: the SCR engine technology and the new

hydraulics are lowering fuel consumption, compared to the previous machine generation. The enhanced productivity is

also ensured by the excellent autonomy of the crawler excavator thanks to the big capacity of the fuel tank and the one

for AdBlue®, which has to be topped up every 10 full tank. The new CX300D is compliant to emission standards Tier 4

Final (Euro Stage IV) with after treatment system SCR and diesel oxydation catalyst (DOC). With this solution the exhaust

gasses are reduced through chemical reaction in the SCR and DOC: so it is not necessary to install a diesel particulate

filter (DPF). The system costs are not affected by the ones of AdBlue®. Urea-based fluid only represents a 3% of fuel

consumption and the benefits on it are much higher. As far as there is no regeneration or substitution of the DPF also

the operating and maintenance costs are particularly low.
