Simmons Memorial Trophy for academic excellence during awards day ceremonies at Hamlet Junior High School last Thursday. Making the presentation is R. L. Altman (right) of the sponsoring Hamlet Rotary Club and HJH principal Ralph S. Robertson (left). Cherie Morrison and Ladson Brearley, both ninth grade students, received the top awards at the Hamlet Junior High School Awards Day program last Thursday. Morrison was tapped ^as best all around ninth grade student in recognition of her outstanding achievements in extracurricular activities as well as academic per- formance. Brearley received the Roger Sim- mons Memorial Trophy for Academic excellence that was presented by the Hamlet Rotary Club. He was the ninth grade student with the highest academic average, 98.783 out of a possible 100 points. The academic excellence award, presented to the student with the second highest academic average, went to Bobby Williams. His average was 98.566. Brearley also was given the Woodmen of the World Trophy for outstanding academic excellence in history. Band awards went to Wendy Herring, outstanding ninth grade student; Tracy Page, outstanding eighth grade student; and Arthur Bowler, leadership award. Seventh grade band students honored were Penny Kirkley, Sandra McManus, Rebecca Fowler, Sammy Copeland, Kim Hunt, and Michael Cain. This came at awards day ceremonies last Thursday. In a brief ceremony in Heutte Hall, the horticulture building at Sandhills Community College, the graduating student with the highest academic standing in landscape gardening, was presented the Piedmont Association of Nurserymen Award by Doug Mc- Millan, the 1977 winner. Sammy Rivers, son of Dr. and Mrs. Billy G. Rivers of Hamlet, the recipient of the 1978 award, was cited for his scholarship and his contribution to the Sandhills College Horticulture Club which he served as an officer. He received the congratulations of Dr. Raymond A. Stone, president of Sandhills, members of the landscape gardening faculty, and his SCC classmates. Friday evening Rivers was one of the 21 men and women who received Associate in Applied Science Degrees in landscape gardening at the Commencement Sandhills. Solids & Arts Council awards grants The North Carolina Arts Council recently announced two grants for arts programs in Richmond County A grant of $6,000 will go to the city of Rockingham to pay for part of the salary of the director of the Richmond Community Theatre A $3,000 grant was awarded to Rockingham Junior High School for the school's Fine Arts Festival The grants were among the 155 grants totaling $301,797 awarded for arts activities m the state The grants are made by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources Funds for the program are provided by the General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. Ladson Brearley is presented the Roger L. Simmons Memorial Trophy for academic excellence during awards day ceremonies at Hamlet Junior High School last Thursday.

Cherie Morrison and Ladson Brearley, both ninth grade students, received the top awards at the Hamlet Junior High School Awards Day program last Thursday.

Morrison was tapped ^as best all around ninth grade student in recognition of her outstanding achievements in extracurr icular activities as well as academic per­formance.

Brearley received the Roger Sim­mons Memorial Trophy for Academic excellence that was presented by the Hamlet Rotary Club. He was the ninth grade student with the highest academic average, 98.783 out of a possible 100 points.

The academic excellence award, presented to the student with the second highest academic average, went to Bobby Williams. His average was 98.566.

Brearley also was given the Woodmen of the World Trophy for outstanding academic excellence in history.

Band awards went to Wendy Herring, outstanding ninth grade student; Tracy Page, outstanding eighth grade student; and Arthur Bowler, leadership award. Seventh grade band students honored were Penny Kirkley, Sandra McManus, Rebecca Fowler, Sammy Copeland, Kim Hunt, and Michael Cain.

Rivers receives award

the 1977-78 school year at Hamlet Junior High School. This came at awards day ceremonies last Thursday.

In a brief ceremony in Heutte Hall, the horticulture building at Sandhills Community College, the graduating student with the highest academic standing in landscape gardening, was presented the Piedmont Association of Nurserymen Award by Doug Mc­Millan, the 1977 winner.

Sammy Rivers, son of Dr. and Mrs. Billy G. Rivers of Hamlet, the recipient of the 1978 award, was cited for his scholarship and his contribution to the Sandhills College Horticulture Club which he served as an officer.

He received the congratulations of Dr. Raymond A. Stone, president of Sandhills, members of the landscape gardening faculty, and his SCC classmates.

Friday evening Rivers was one of the 21 men and women who received Associate in Applied Science Degrees in landscape gardening at the

Commencement Sandhills.

Arts Council awards grants The North Carolina Arts Council

recently announced two grants for arts programs in Richmond County

A grant of $6,000 will go to the city of Rockingham to pay for part of the salary of the director of the Richmond Community Theatre

A $3,000 grant was awarded to Rockingham Junior High School for the school's Fine Arts Festival

The grants were among the 155

grants totaling $301,797 awarded for arts activities m the state The grants are made by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources

Funds for the program are provided by the General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The grant for the Richmond Com­munity Theatre was one of the largest single grants in this section of the state
