THE GREEN WAVE December 2014, No 39 The approaching end of another year is an ideal time to take stock. This year, 2014, has been a packed one for Green Marine! The environmental program is radiating with activity and has welcomed many new members: 11 new participants, 10 new partners and, in terms of endorsement, three new associations and two new supporters. A positive upward trend continued in the evaluation results of the participants in the Green Marine environmen- tal program. The overall average climbed to 3.1 (from 3.0 a year earlier) on a scale of 1 to 5. The results were announced at our annual conference, GreenTech 2014, which was held with great success in Saint John, New Brunswick, in June. Our team is also on the rise with this year’s hiring of Eleanor Kirtley as Green Marine’s West Coast program manager based in Seattle, Washington. Her responsibilities include serving and recruiting West Coast members and collaborating with the West Coast advisory committee. It’s with great pride that Green Marine also launched its new look and new website in 2014! Response to Green Marine’s fresh branding has been very positive. In short, it’s been a great year of new contributors, new challenges and new achievements in the spirit of continual improvement that’s at the heart of the Green Marine environmental program! Finally, we would like to take a moment this holiday season to thank you for your support and to wish you happy holidays and a pros- perous and increasingly sustainable New Year! – The Green Marine Team GREEN MARINE WELCOMES A NEW PARTICIPANT The Port of Longview is the first full-service operating port on the deep-draft Columbia River shipping channel in Sou- thwest Washington. UPCOMING EVENTS

Ocean Networks Canada, an initiative of the University of Victoria, operates the world’s most advanced cabled ocean observatories off the coast of British Colum-bia and in the Canadian Arctic. Ocean Networks Canada has recently launched the Smart Oceans Systems,™ a program that harnesses science and research with its world-leading technology to deliver both data and data management and archival products to improve marine and public safety, as well as the environmental moni-toring of Canada’s coastal and offshore ocean areas..

With the year quickly coming to an end, it will soon be time for participants of the Green Marine environmental program to assess their environmental perfor-mance for 2014. Self-evaluations are due April 1st, 2015. The self-evaluations will relate each participant’s performance from January 1st through December 31st, 2014. The new 2014 self-evaluation guides are now ready and available on line. To facilitate this yearly evaluation process, we developed three distinct guides: one for ship owners; one for ports and the Seaway corporations; and, one for terminals and shipyards.

The day chai-red by Nicole Trépanier, the president of SODES (the St-Lawrence Economic Development Council), is not to be missed with key aspects of the St. Lawrence River’s future being discussed. David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director, has been invited to address some of the marine industry’s sustainability challenges going forward. February 10 2015, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Montréal

One of Fednav’s vessels has earned a perfect rating with the ship-vetting experts at RightShip. The Federal Tyne received a five-star risk rating, a five-star environmental rating, and a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

rating of A+ in October 2014. Of the approxi-mately 18,000 bulk carriers in service currently, only 26 vessels have a five-star rating for both risk and environmental aspects, and six of them are owned by Fednav. The Federal Tyne further distinguishes itself by having a perfect GHG emissions score of A+, and is one of only two such elite bulk carriers in the world.Through a long-term charter arrangement with Intership Navigation, Fednav is adding three more new lakers to its fleet. These 36,500-DWT

vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2016 and 2017, further reinforce Fednav’s commitment to the future of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

INDUSTRY SUCCESS STORIES

The CSL St-Laurent – the second of two new Trillium Class Great Lakes bulk carriers built for Canada Steam-ship Lines (CSL) – was delivered on November 26, and began her maiden voyage on December 13th. The bulk carrier departed from the Yangfan shipyard on Zhoushan Island in China, en route to Canada for operation throu-ghout the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.CSL St-Laurent marks the successful completion of CSL’s audacious new-build program, which began with the delivery in December 2012 of the award-winning Trillium Class self-unloading laker Baie St. Paul. Three other Tril-lium Class self-unloading lakers have since been intro-duced to the Great Lakes fleet: the Baie Comeau, Thunder Bay and Whitefish Bay. Two bulk carriers – the CSL St-Lau-rent and CSL Welland – will both commence operating at the start of the 2015 Seaway season. The Trillium Class new-build program also oversaw the delivery of three Panamax self-unloaders for CSL Ameri-cas and named the Rt. Hon. Paul E. Martin, CSL Tecumseh and CSL Tacoma.
