The end of 2015 is near and we all look forward to a few relaxing days with our families and friends. But it is also the time in which we want to make a review of the current year.

Business at Badger Meter Europa has developed just as positively in 2015 as in previous years and all product ranges have registered a significant increase in sales.

In return, I would like to give my special thanks to all our customers, a testimony to their confidence in the quality of our products and especially to all Badger Meter staff for enabling this success with their reliable work, motivation and their customer focus.

With the completion of the expansion of our office complex at the end of Octo-ber 2015, the prerequisite for a positive development of Badger Meter could also be created in space.

In retrospect, what leaves a little bitterness is the geopolitical situation of our world.

Unfortunately, our desires, which we so often articulate for Christmas, in the desire for peace on this earth, were not fulfilled. Today, we can see the result in the refugee flows to Europe, of which we are strongly confronted in Germany. Now we are aware of how lucky we were, living through the last decades in our liberal

democracy. It is a huge challenge for our society to cope with this task.

We, at Badger Meter Europa, will help within our capabilities to cope with the integration of willing and qualified refugees. We should never forget our own history and also remember that our jobs depend on the image of our company in the world with an export share of more than 75%. The challenges of our times cannot be solved with slogans and nationalism, but rather we can contribute to solutions with good will and ideas. I wish all employees, customers and partners of Badger Meter Europa a Merry Christmas and the peace and serenity, to consider in all its facets, the challenges of our time.

RCVcalc – The smart sizing solution New multi-spring pneumatic actuator PA-58

Control valves for reverse osmosis plants

With more than 2000 different media – ranging from gas, liquid, bi-phase or steam – RCVcalc provides accurate, versatile information, automatic phase identification of standard media and offers the possibility to create customized media to better reflect the system parameters of the plant.

The software enables the user to visu alize the operation set points and to review various trims and characteristics that are filtered for the application. It provides real-time scenarios to review trims and control points while considering the rangeability of each innervalve. For low flow calculations, RCVcalc implemented enhanced formu-las to cover transitional and laminar flow situations. It also allows the user to enter a vast range of units.

The sizing software identifies the actuator shut off forces, including the friction at the packing and shut off class.

Used in combination with the RefProp package from NIST, RCVcalc will add the information into the database, thus allowing to leverage thermodynamic equations of various fluid states providing higher accuracy for high pressure and/or low temperature applications.

The new sizing software finally provides real-time system alerts (cavitation and operational alarms) to create scenarios with operating points to better define system limitations and better valve selections.

RCVcalc is a new sizing software that adapts to the process requirements of the plant and guides the user through selecting the right control valve for any new project.

The PA58 actuator is a 58 square-inch (374 cm2) pneumatic, multi-spring diaphragm actuator designed specifically to fit the RCV product line. The actuator can be used with a wide range of valve solutions from larger process valves to high pressure applications. The actuator is field reversible (without additional parts) allowing flexibility within the field. This actuator is available air-to-open or air-to-close. The yoke and the actuator housings are made of carbon steel and coated with epoxy for corrosion resistance. The PA58 actuator normally operates in response to a 24 psi range. The signal range causes the valve to stroke a distance of approximately 1 inch. Depending on the associated RCV valve, a positioner is needed if a shorter stroke is necessary.

The physical osmosis effect is a matter of partial pressure balance between two differently concentrated liquids which are separated by a semipermeable membrane. Due to this, molecules pass through the membrane until the partial pressure becomes identical on both sides. In nature, this effect is the basis of cell metabolism. In technology, this effect is most often used for the purification of water.

To accomplish this, we use the principle of reverse osmosis. If pressure on the contaminated liquid is increased over its “natural“ osmotic pressure, the molecules reverse. The contaminated medium is thereby more highly concentrated, while the amount on the “clean side“ is raised.

This pressure is usually generated by a pump. Badger Meter designed a special valve for the pressure regulation in reverse osmosis plants to precisely control this pressure. One of the challenges during the development of this valve was to ensure the long-term chemical resistance to the concentrated liquid.

Control valves for reverse osmosis are available in the following sizes: 1“, ¾“, ½“, 3/8“ and ¼“ and with Cv values from 6,0 up to 1,8 E-6. The main application field for these types of valves is for seawater desalination on ships and also the cleaning of sewage water.

New oval gear meters in PVDF

New VISION 3000 low cost turbine flow meter

The new oval gear meters in PVDF can be used in a number of applications where conventional meters are not appropriate. They are best suited for flow measurement of viscous or high corrosive fluids, additives, AdBlue®, ultrapure water and oils, but also for a wide range of chemical applications, including hydrocarbons based liquids and water solutions.

Models in PVDF are more economical as other types of meters for this kind of applications. They also are precise and very rugged meters.

The meters cover a flow range of 0.25 to 120 l/min and operate within a tempera-ture range of -30° to +60°C. At a pressure rate of 16 bar, they show an accuracy of 1,5%.

The PVDF models are available in sizes ¼”, ¾”, 1” and 1” high flow.

The low cost turbine meters in the VISION series are well known in the market. Now, in addition to the VISION 1000 with a flow range of 0,1 to 2,5 l/min and the VISION 2000 with a flow range of 0,5 to 35 l/min, the new VISION 3000 is a good choice for applications ranging from 2 to 60 l/min.

The VISION 3000 turbine flow meter is made entirely from Trogamid – which is a very low-priced, transparent and ultra-light material. All materials used are also compliant with drinking water approvals.

The mechanical properties are excellent and the materials are resistant to ethanol and methanol, enabling measuring applications for water, but also fuels, inks, lyes (alkaline solutions) and weak acids.

The Vision meters have an accuracy of +/- 3% of actual flow. VISION 3000 is available in DN12 in G 3/4“ and NPT 3/4“, with DIN plug connector but also available with special or customized cable connec-tions.

The power supply ranges between 5 to 24 VDC or between 2 to 5,5 V when battery-powered.

Thanks to excellent technical properties, applications for the very versatile VISION turbine flow meters are many. They are best suited for industrial applications in cooling plants, dosing, irrigation and dispensing systems, or in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

The Blancett® product family has grown. The 1500 turbine meter stands out from all previous Blancett® turbines with its extraordinary linearity. Temperature and viscosity effects can be reduced to the greatest possible extent. Type 1500 is suitable for clean and filtered media and can, for example, be used in the chemical, process and aerospace industries.

Combined with the flow monitor B3000, the current flow rate and flow volume can be displayed simultaneously. The turbine meter is now available and comes with a standard 10-point calibration.

Blancett® meters help hydraulic fracturing companies keep the environment safe and meet government regulations

Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a process used to extract underground natural resources from below the earth’s surface. These resources include oil, natural gas, geothermal ener-gy, and even water. The process includes pumping fracturing fluid at high pressures into a well, sometimes drilled thousands of feet deep. The pressure of the fluid creates cracks in the underground rock, allowing trapped resources to flow up the well. Since the fracturing fluid contains chemicals and consumes water, companies are required by state and federal law to maintain accurate records of process fluidinjected into and recovered from wells.

The laws help ensure environmental and public safety. This is where the importance of accurate flow measurement comes into play. With high accuracy and a rugged design, Blancett® 1100 series meters in six, eight and ten inch line sizes are an ideal solution for measuring process liquid in hydraulic fracturing operations in the U.S. and Canada; often mounted on the pump trucks that deliver and recover the process water. Blancett® meters maintain high accuracy while withstanding on-truck vibration and harsh conditions. Additionally, the Blancett® B3000 monitor can be used with the 1100 series meters to provide customers with a durable, easy-to-use meter interface, which simultaneously dis-plays flow rate and flow total. The B3000 allows for greater control and visibility of flow with features such as alarm parameters, advanced connectivity options and a variety of mounting options.

The new electronic unit iSonic 4000 was developed based on experiences with the model iSonic 3000. Compared to the 4-channel model iSonic 3000, iSonic 4000 is meant only for flow measurements in open channels and partially filled pipes and volume measurements of liquids in tanks. It is possible to connect one level sensor (ultrasonic, pressure, etc.) with a 4-20 mA output to the unit. The iSonic 4000 electronic unit was developed in the Badger Meter facility in Brno, Czech Republic, on the hardware platform of the electro magnetic flow meter ModMAG® M1000, utilizing the same housing, gra-phic display, outputs and communication possibilities. The unit can be programmed using three front panel push buttons. The programming menu offers a wide variety of primary flow elements - flumes and weirs, and for others enables the calcu-lation of flow rate in partially filled pipes

iSonic 4000 E-Series®: Data transfer and communication capabilities for accounting settlement systems

and angular open channels using the Manning equation. It is also possible to enter the special h/Q flow table, using the PC software “Flow Meter Tool”. This software allows programming of all para-meters and also the download of logged data. The users’ PC can be connected via USB interface (IP67 mini USB connector is mounted on the meter housing) or Ethernet interface. The Flow Meter Tool PC soft-ware is unique to Badger Meter devices ModMAG® M1000, ModMAG® M2000, B-MAG I M5000 and iSonic 4000. This exceptional feature allows programming and control all addressed devices connect-ed via Ethernet interface within the scope of one facility, from a PC using running the Flow Meter software tool. The pilot installation of two iSonic 4000 units, together with ultrasonic sensors EchoPod DL-10 was made at the efflu-ent treatment plant of the city of Púchov

The Badger Meter E-Series® offers a successful data transfer between E-Series® meters with 868 MHz radio and the ELVACO data collector module CMe3100 / CMeX13s.

The various standardized communication modules of Badger Meter offer the pos-sibility to connect the water meter with various, already by customer existing billing systems as well as to transfer the data. This allows especially the transfer of the current meter reading, the current flow, the remaining life of the battery, as well as various alarm messages.

As a transfer unit the ELVACO solution is preferred in countries of the Middle East, as this method allows to readout data from up to 500 meters with only one single unit and can be stored and forwarded to a billing system.

The data from the meter are transmitted wirelessly and are collected in the CMEX13s. Thereafter, the data are passed to the billing system via the CMe3100 by an M-Bus interface or Ethernet.

Thanks to our partners Sacatec Equipement in France and Triens Emea S.A. in Belgium, an oil management system LMS RF High-End with ZigBee® technology with two dispense terminals and four radio frequency meters is in-stalled in the Porsche Experience Center for controlled and wireless oil dispensing.

DENISOL INDIGO 30 / Bringing indigo back to its roots

The world renowned multinational tex-tile chemicals manufacturing company ARCHROMA has started to produce pre-reduced liquid Indigo solution “DENISOL INDIGO 30” in Pakistan to cater for the fast demands from customers, big brands & retailers.

Archroma has the major market share in the field of textiles globally having a vast range of products to offer to the industry. This led to the slogan in the product name „Bringing indigo back to its roots“ because the initial cultivation of the Indigo plant „Indigofera tinctoria“ is dated to 2000 BC in the area where Archroma has their production facility in Pakistan.

ARCHROMA Pakistan Ltd. has the great advantage of geographical proximity to its customers, due to their local production facilities in Karachi, Pakistan which is in the heart of one of the major production sites for the denim industry, which helps to reduce the logistical costs.

Storz GmbH – the Badger Meter Europa GmbH distributor for flow measurement in Southern Germany – is active in the field of application technology for liquid dosages since its foundation, as well as more than 15 years in the field of application of liquid dosages in the denim textile industry.Based on long standing experience in this field, ARCHROMA has sought the cooperation with Storz GmbH, which has now reached its first milestone by the successful commissioning of a do-sing system with a key customer of the Pakistani denim textile market.

This customer produces more than 3.2 million meters/month Denim of the best quality on several „cable“ (Rope) – dyeing facilities and has to use a perfectly opti-mized dosing of liquid indigo dye for this quality and to ensure this standard.

When selecting an appropriate flow meter it has to be considered that a dosage of the indigo dye liquid has to be always very precise on the one hand, but on the other hand the nature of the Indigo dye must not be neglected. Due to the medium, no mechanical counter could be selected there fore Storz GmbH decided to use a convenient and precise electromagnet ic flow meter of the type ModMAG® M1000. All the customer requirements were considered with this device, so that the customer is able to reliably dispense the dye to achieve a consistent quality of the denim dyeing.

ModMAG® M1000 electromagnetic flow meters

The ModMAG® M1000 offers a very high performance ratio with an accuracy of ± 0.3% and can be quickly adapted by simple configuration for the respective application. Due to the wide range of supply power to the measuring system and also the auxiliary voltage is so robust that interferences in the local power grid have no impact on the device.

The ModMAG® M1000 is designed to protection category IP67 and is ideally placed to perform reliably and be durable in rough, moist and chemically aggressive environments. Due to its 4-20 mA and passive pulse outputs and ability to be connected to a Siemens S7-300 to display the current rate of flow and also to adjust a subsequent control valve to the specification of the dosage, recording of the total consumption as metered data is simplified.

The operation and adjustment of the system is undertaken via a Siemens touch panel. This panel directly accesses a Sie-mens S7-300, which collects the current measured values from the associated measuring system „ModMAG® M1000” and adjusts the dosage dependent on set points from a formulation and the current rate of the dyeing machine. This connec-tion, and the dosage has to be continuous-ly very precise, depending on the set point, which can be between 200 ml/min up to 4000 ml/min, because even the slightest deviation can impact the quality of the final product and the efficiency of the system.

According to the importance of the new installation, this facility was inaugurated by the cutting of a ribbon by members of the company management.

Review Asian Sales & Marketing Seminar 2015 in SingaporeOur Asian Sales & Marketing Seminar was held from October 19-22, 2015 in Singapore. The 76 participants came from 14 countries, including Qatar, Thailand, India, China, South Korea, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and Philippines. In addition to the seminar program, which contained 20 workshops over three days which provided an insight to all Badger Meter product lines, an island tour on the Royal Albatross, Luxury Tall Sailing Ship was also organised for guests, sailing around Singapore. We would like to thank all the seminar participants for their willing-ness to participate and making it another great convention for the Badger Meter Europa Asia sales network. We hope that everyone found the event useful and all the Badger Meter Europa team are looking forward to another great event next time.

Growth in all ranksFor more than 20 years WDV® Molliné operates in the field of consumption measurement. From its founding in 1993 up to today there has been a continuous expansion. This positive development can be seen at all levels of the nationwide company: The number of employees has grown up to 120 by now and expertise, especially regarding energy efficiency and energy management, which has expanded in parallel.

Area enlargementThe company headquarters is located at a new location in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany since early July and has a storage areas which is almost twice as large as previously. Building extension

Badger Meter Europa grows

With the completion of the new building extension with an area of 450m2 we have not only got new office spaces for the Export, Sales Management and Valve de-partments, but also an additional common room and the new conference room „Teck“ with access to the roof terrace and a beautiful view of the ancient castle „Hohen Neuffen“.

The relocation has been completed in record- breaking time and everyone is happy about the new premises. We are pleased about the growth of Badger Meter Europa.

From January the Badger Meter Europa website will have a completely new design. The websites of Badger Meter Europa, Badger Meter Czech, Badger Meter Slovakia and Remag were designed in a unique layout to provide you with a nice overview of all Badger Meter Europa companies. Beside the customized layout there will be an extension of the language options to include English, German, Czech, Slovak, Spanish and French. The filter ing capabilities on the new website have also been extended, so that there is no longer a simple slider, but rather a checkbox filter with multiple selections and a select box filter with pulldown menu, which ensures intuitive sorting. The bookmark function has been expanded to a „Request for Quotation“ function and there is plenty more to be excited about also.

So that you know what to expect, please take a look at the new website in January, but right now we can already provide you with a glimpse from the new design based on the following pictures.

Janina Schweizer For passing her exam as an industrial clerk. She has joined operational marketing after her 3-year apprentice ship.

Mr. Horisberger started at Remag as switchgear fitter on 1st November 1985.

At that time Remag was a major Swiss provider in plant construction in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Thanks to his broad technical understand-ing and craftsmanship, he moved to the service department in 1989.

In 1972 Mr. Erb established Badger Meter Europa in Echterdingen, near Stuttgart airport. At that time the office was responsible for Europe and the Middle East. As the first director of our office, he headed the company for 23 years before he retired in 1995. He supported us many years afterwards with editorial contributions, articles and with the expansion of our QM system.

Mr. Erb died at the age of 86 years on the 22nd August 2015. We miss him.

From 1992, Mr. Horisberger then moved to indoor sales and takes care of our trading business.

We want to thank Mr. Horisberger for his long lasting collaboration.

Badger Meter Europa GmbH participated this year at the sponsor of two school buses for the Theodor-Eisenlohr school and the Bodelschwinghschule in Nürtingen (neighbour city of Neuffen). The buses are used for trips to the school forest, to the youth farm, for excursions and the procurement of meals. We wish lots of fun to all the children and the teachers!
