VoIP Codec – What is it?

Acronym that stands for "compression/decompression

Essential part of VoIP

Codecs are used to convert an analogue voice signal to a digitally encoded version.

Codec will compress the information. The compression level varies between codecs

Codecs vary in the sound quality and the bandwidth required

VoIP equipment will negotiate which codec to use unless specified

Drawbacks have now been overcomeCall quality (with the right network) as good as PSTNHigher bandwidth solutions availableMore understanding of compression and protocolsConvergence of voice, data and video
