General Notes Duration: 11 minutes Transposed Score Accidentals apply only to the notes that they precede, except for repeated notes. “Z” markings on stems: “flutter-tongue” for winds and brass; “roll” for percussion; “tremolo” (unmeasured always) for strings. : highest / lowest note possible.

: unmeasured accelerando (or ritardando if reversed). Durations of such figures vary and are indicated above individual parts. Performers should not limit the figures to the number of notes notated in the passage; play as many as possible. “Timbral” trill: a quick fluctuation between a natural (normal) fingering and an alternate one. A slight microtonal difference is desired. In some cases the trill is notated in measured rhythm; here, n indicates the normal fingering and o the alternate. Figures and patterns bracketed within repeat signs are meant to be played through the duration of the thick bar following the figure. Courtesy rests are given for figures that do not begin or end at the beginning of a measure to show placement.

Grace notes are to be played before the beat always. Any exceptions to be played on the beat are notated as such: m. 93ff: the bends to microtonal pitches are rhythmic notations of a static, continuously slurred pitch. The microtones are not expected to be precise, and winds and brass with such figures should breathe at any time necessary.

The pattern is 9:6, where their eighth note is equal to the triplet-eighth in other parts.

Harp

Harp harmonics are notated at written pitch and sound an octave higher. The two lowest strings should be tuned D§ and C§.

Piano “+”: mute the string; specifications are made in the score and on the part. Glissandi and Cluster specifications are made in the score and on the part.

Strings M. 13ff: Celli and Double Basses (and ultimately the remaining strings) begin a figure in which they are meant to tremolo and glissando simultaneously. The duration and beat patterns of each measure are provided above the staff for reference, as well as verbal indications regarding the performance of the glissandi. When presented with figures and patterns bracketed within repeat signs, always perform as individual players, never as a section.

: unmeasured accelerated bow tremolo between an open string and an adjacent string. The pitch of the adjacent string should be a slight microtonal difference than the open string, and the figure should last the duration indicated in the brackets above. Again, players should not limit themselves to the number of notated pitches, but should play as many as possible within the given time.

Program Note A Mythology attempts to reinterpret literary forms and ideas into music. Structures that began in the realm of prose—i.e. Essays and Poems, among others—have over time found new life in musical thought, and mythologies, too, are unique in form and content, often exceeding the legends, folktales, stories and moral offerings to which some misconceptions limit them. While not a literal re-telling of any one particular Myth, A Mythology is rather a celebration of the commonality between innumerable cultures and religions whose mythic fables seek to identify solutions, usually via the supernatural, to life’s greatest mysteries. One such mystery is the creation of the world (including humanity, life and the universe), and this is the specific type of myth that A Mythology explores. Every culture and religion has various explanations and stories regarding the world’s birth, firmly rooted in the mythology of its people. Furthermore, and especially with creation myths, common threads or motifs run throughout, often providing an underlying skeletal structure that is seemingly reinterpreted by other cultures. A Mythology latches onto these motifs and tells its own narrative of creation.
