MISSIONSTATEMENTFOR-NMJ• Provide inspiration for our members’ mean ingful programs and degrees.

• Provide convenient opportunities for our members to enhance their lives.

• Provide enjoyable programs and fellowship for our members.

FROM THE SECRETARY - Ill. James G. Fidler, 33° Brethren, this time of year our thoughts turn to fun and relaxation as we look for ways to take advantage of nicer weather. As we look toward the rest of summer keep in mind the events being planned by the Valley of Canton for the Inspiration, Convenience and Enjoyment of the members. The month of August provides still more opportunities for Valley mem-bers to get together and have fun. The Stated Meeting at the Masonic Temple in Canton at 7:30PM on Thursday August 11 will be preceded

by a delicious dinner at 6:30PM sponsored by the Masonic Association and will feature the camaraderie Scottish Rite is famous for. Saturday, August 6, 2016 figures prominently on the Scottish Rite calendar with three sig-nificant events for the Brethren to choose from on that same day:The 9 th Annual Central Stark Club Steak Fry and Wine Tasting, this year to be held at the Massillon AM-Vets Post 12 at 5:00PM, is always an enjoyable event. And don’t forget that the Scottish Rite tradition of volunteer activities in connection with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremony continues this year and provides another opportunity for Scottish Rite Masons to get together. Something tells me our HOF volunteers will be recognized in an upcoming edition of the Chronicle. Finally, it is also the date selected by the Ohio Council of Deliberation Membership Com-mittee for an outstanding Member Recruitment and Retention program open to all Scottish Rite Members at the Ohio Masonic Home in Springfield, Ohio. There is no way anyone could attend all three of these events being held on the same day, but any one of the three is well worth a Member’s time. While we’re talking about enjoyable events for Masons to attend, the list includes the An-nual Corn Roast sponsored by our York Rite Brethren in Canton Commandery #38 at the Canton Masonic Temple at 6:00PM on Tuesday August 16- all the roasted ears of corn , hot dogs and ice cream you can eat for a donation of $5.00.Please remember, we need petitions for the upcoming Fall Reunion, November 10-12, 2016, honoring Ill. Membership by Scott Garan, Chairman So I was thinking about a few important “ truths” about life. These “truths” are sort of a code to live by. They are things I think about when living MY life! I hope you can get something out of them. These “truths” are as follows:

• If an undertaking was easy, someone else would have al ready done it.• If you follow in another man’s footsteps, you miss the prob lems worth solving.• Excellence is born of preparation, dedication, focus, and tenacity; compromise any of these and you become average!• Every so often, life presents a great moment of decision, an intersection at which a man must decide to stop or go; a person LIVES with these decisions forever! Think wisely!• Examine everything; not all is as it seems or as people tell you!• It is easiest to live with a decision if it is based on an earnest sense of right and wrong.• The fact that I live or die is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that while alive, I lived an honorable life and that I made a difference in OTHER people’s lives!• The worst possible decision in life is to GIVE UP! No matter WHAT the problem!• We are not guaranteed a tomorrow! Don’t put off things you feel are important, for if you do you may regret it later. As I look over this list, I think about all of my Masonic breth-ren. Yes, each of you! I have always feared mediocrity. I mean we all have only one life! Why be just another cog in the machine? Why be average? Being average stinks! Freemasons are NOT average people.Look at what we do. We take oaths to support each other, our families and our brother’s family as well. More importantly we uphold our oaths. We are charitable not only within the fraternity, but also to those NOT in the fraternity. We hon-estly try to help others! The Dyslexia Center, donating to the veterans, and the Shri-ner’s Hospitals are but a few of our worthy causes. We take the promise to provide relief to others to heart! Each of us does what we can! That my friends is why we are not average. So many people go through life caring only about themselves! Look at what is happening in our country today. It seems our philosophy is becoming out dated, but THAT is why we are a special group of men. We have people that are attacking our police, the thin blue line that keeps us from becoming a totally chaotic world! The media

DonaldEverettBallard (born December 5, 1945) is a retired American colonel in the Kansas National Guard and former member of the United States Navy, in which he was a Hospital Corpsman in the Vietnam War and received the Medal of Honor.Ballard was born in Kansas City, Missouri and it was there that he enlisted in the United

States Navy. Sent to Vietnam, Ballard served as a corpsman in the Quang Tri province with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (Mike 3/4) of the 3rd Marine Division. On May 16, 1968, Ballard treated two Marines suffering from heat exhaus-tion, and when returning to his unit from the casualty evacua-tion helicopter pad he and his company were attacked by the North Vietnamese Army. While under fire, Ballard directed aid to other wounded US Marines and when a grenade landed nearby, he lay on top of it to protect the wounded. The gre-nade failed to explode and Ballard was able to throw it away to explode harmlessly, and then continue to treat the wound-ed. For his actions, he received the United States of America’s highest award, the Medal of Honor

spreads lies to fuel hatred and create higher ratings! No my brethren, we still live by an honest code of conduct. To be good men and true is one of the principles we live by.Brethren , be proud of your Masonic Fraternity! Be proud of all that WE stand for! If you find a non-mason, spread the word about OUR fraternity! If you find someone that is a Mason but has yet to join the Scottish Rite, let them know that the Scottish Rite expands upon what our fraternity of-fers! That it allows us to get more out of our fraternity! Let them know that our fraternity offers an endless path to self improvement! Brethren, with each new qualified member we bring into our Lodges or Temples, it only improves the goodness we already have. And finally brethren, do YOUR part in supporting the chari-ties we as a group support! Donate time or money to the Dyslexia center. Look for other charities we support and do what you can to help! Donate some clothing to the men and women in need of help at the Canton VA who need it! Brethren, we are a great fraternity, because we are not aver-age people! We are people that still say the pledge to the flag and pray to our God. We are men of honor! We are Ameri-cans and Freemasons!

AugustProgram Bro. Daniel Schario will share his experience when he worked on the Marmet Lock Extension on the Kanawha River in West Virginia from 2004 to 2008. He has some interesting stories to share with us.

CHILDREN’S DYSLEXIA CENTERGreetings from the Children’s Dyslexia Center,The Center is open for six weeks during the summer and the last day of operation is August 4. Twenty children are attending the summer session. There are 6 certified tutors and 5 scholars tutoring the children this summer. The 5 scholars will finish the practicum this fall and 3 new scholars will be ready to begin the practicum. Classes for the new scholars are held on Saturdays. Classes were held on June 11, July 16, 23, 30 and the final class for this semester will be August 23. Classes were also held for certified tutors on July 11 and 12. Those who attended received 4 continuing credit hours toward the renewal of their certification. Certified tutors must earn 10 credits per year in order to renew their certification. You will notice at the bottom of this article is a new logo from the Stark Community Foundation. They have awarded the Children’s Dyslexia Center a grant of $10,000. The Grand Chapter of Ohio Order of the Eastern Star Charitable Founda-tion awarded the Center $1,910.99. United Way has also funded the Center with a grant and allocates a monthly amount of $1667.66. The Center is blessed to have such generous donations. Donations of supplies are greatly appreciated. At this time we are not in need of supplies as the donations have been very generous. Your continued support of the Center is appreciated by all who are involved.Carol Jones, Director

At the Awards Dinner on May 14th, Wayne W. Fritter was the Recipient of the Chairman’s Award presented by Ill. Thomas J. White, 33° Chairman of the Board of Trustees

At the May 14th Awards dinner Bro. Donald S. Judisch received his 65 year Service Award.

Wayne/HolmesClub.As may be expected the previous outings have not been well attended. The June event was to participate in the Special Olympics opening ceremony by participating in the proces-sion as Masonic supporters. As this is one of our charities it was a good thing to do.July’s event was to join in one of the Special Olympics soft-ball game in Wooster beginning with a tail-gate picnic and then support the teams. It was the most enjoyable ball game I have ever attended. There was an opening home-run derby that was exciting. Three homers were hit. Then there were the cheer-leaders. Very special people. Most interesting was the man on the microphone. His narration and the color guy moved the game along. More events will be held during the year. The Amish Country Theater is scheduled for the end of this dead-line-for-the-Chronicle week. Hope to have a review for the next issue. As I will be away much of August, there is nothing sched-uled for this month. For September 3rd you may be my guest(s) for a day or week-end of gold prospecting/mining/treasure hunts/camping in nearby Loudenville. on Clear Creek. You may want to come for only Saturday for the first time out, but welcome Friday thru Sunday.Dana Keirstead330-669-2514

ILostMyJob.ShouldIGoBackToWork?By Monica Rose GwinOhioMeansJobs Centers in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties

It’s August and summer is beginning to wind down and our thoughts turn to back to school activities. Losing your job may give you the time to consider new career options that include returning to school. Going back to school is a great way to move towards a positive employment future. If you are thinking about schooling there are several factors you should consider.“Most importantly, can you afford not to be employed while you are in school? While you may qualify for financial aid to pay for your schooling, you also have to continue to pay your bills. Often people will work part time jobs while they are in school to supplement their income,” advises Amy Miller, Resource Center Manager/One-Stop Officer for OMJ Centers in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties. You need to determine the type of course work you want to study in school. It is important to look at the job market in the field you are interested in to see if there are jobs available. You don’t want to be in the position of completing school, only to find out that there aren’t any jobs available in that particular field. Look for schooling in high demand fields. Your research also should include finding out if the types of jobs you are looking for are available in your area. If they are not, you need to decide if you are willing to relocate.People often feel that they don’t have the luxury of taking two or four years to go back to school to get a degree. Many training programs have options to take courses online. Some programs may not require a degree, but are certificate or licensure programs that take a year or less to complete. You need to determine what is going to be the best fit for you. “Many believe that they are too old or are fearful of returning to school,” says Miller. “The truth is that you are never too old to advance your education. It is an adjustment; how-ever education is a huge benefit even if you only take a few classes. You also should look at the possibility of taking a few classes in the field you are currently in. It might make you more marketable in your field, and open new job oppor-tunities for you.”Another option to ease the adjustment of going back to school, or to see if you have interest in a topic is to take advantage of MOOC (Massive Open Online Classes). These courses are free and provide you with a vast array of topics from many prestigious schools. Take your time and inves-tigate areas you are interested in by taking a class. This is a free and a no pressure way to see if you have an interest in a particular field. To learn more of Amy’s job search tips tune in Mondays at 3:15pm on WJER 1450 and on Wednesdays at 11:40am on Mix 94.1 and 12:42pm on NewsTalk 1480.

MERITORIOUSSERVICEAWARDEES The MSA club holds a monthly scheduled breakfast for all MSA Awardees throughout 2016. They are held the second Tuesday of each month at John’s Bar at 9:00 AM.The schedule for 2016 is as follows. The breakfast is open to all Scottish Rite members. Plan on attending.

The Valley of Canton MSAs are always working diligently to support the efforts of the Valley.

AfewInterestingFactsAbouttheMedalofHonor• The only woman awarded the Medal of Honor was Mary Walker, an Army Surgeon at the battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861• There are nineteen double recipients of the Medal of Honor• The earliest actions for which the Medal was awarded took place before the Civil War had even begun, February 13-14, 1861 in what is now Arizona. Bernard J.D. Irwin was an As-sistant Surgeon in the Army when he voluntarily led a com-mand of troops to relieve a surrounded detachment of the 7th Infantry. Irwin’s Medal was not awarded until January 24, 1894, over 30 years after he had performed his deed. But on March 25, 1863 Pvt. Jacob Parrott was the first of a group of 6 men awarded the Medal for their actions in “The Great Loco-motive Chase” in April 1862. They were the first ever to wear the Medal of Honor.• At Drewry’s Bluff, VA aboard the U.S.S. Galena, Corporal John Mackie became the first Marine to earn the Medal of Honor. He received the award aboard the U.S.S. Seminole on 10 July 1863. • On July 25, 1963 Congress established a set of guidelines under which the Medal of Honor could be awarded: a.) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; b.) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or, c.) while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party

On Tuesday, July 12th the breakfast at John’s Bar had 15 MSA members and 5 &1/2 33° members in attendance. The conversation around the table covered a multitude of subjects. All enjoyed good fellowship and a very nice breakfast. Come join us next month. Oh yes, the 1/2 33° was Doc Rhodes’ grandson, he had a good time.

The Annual MSA Dinner was held on June 25th, at the Hartville Kitchen Restaurant in Hartville. There were 28 in attendance. All enjoyed a fantastic meal and good fellowship. We are planning to have next year’s dinner at the same place.

InmemoriamWhen the world is upside down, brush away the tears, the frown,

Say a little prayer and soon, a ray of hope will conquer gloom. Our lot is easier to bear when we talk to God in prayer.

And like a beacon shining bright, prayer will soothe the grievous plight.Tales of woe, like useless weeds, serve no purpose, but the seeds

That enable us to cope are the prayers of faith and hope
