LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans were handed a 6-1 defeat by the Frederick Keys on Sunday...Keys starter Matt Taylor fired seven scoreless innings, beating the Pelicans Sam Wolff in the series finale...SAM WOLFF tossed seven innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, and four walks. He added four strikeouts...CODY EGE allowed a pair of runs in relief...The Pelicans rallied with a run in the ninth and had the bases loaded with one out when the LUIS MENDEZ grounded out to end the ballgame. EVEN STEVENS: While the Pelicans hold the all-time series lead with the Dash 166-132, the series between the two clubs has been extremely close in recent history. Myrtle Beach took the season set 11-9 in 2013 and the Dash won the series matchup by the same record in 2012. Since becoming a Rangers affiliate prior to the 2011 season, the Pelicans are 30-30 against the Dash, going 10-10 in 2011. The last time a team had a sizable win in the season series was when Myrtle Beach won 14 of the 20 meetings in 2008. KE-ING IN ON DOUBLE-A: Right-handed pitcher KEONE KELA earned his first promotion to Double-A on Saturday. He went 0-1 with a 2.61 ERA for the Pelicans in a team-high eight appearances, all out of the bullpen. At the time of his departure from the team, he was tied for third in the Carolina League with five saves and held the longest stretch of consecutive batters retired by a Pelicans reliever this season (14). Kela is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 18 prospect in the Rangers farm system with the “Best Fastball,” according to the same publication. The club received Abel De Los Santos from the Hickory Crawdads. He posted an 0-1 record with a 1.69 ERA. Over 10.2 innings pitched, he fanned 12 and walked one batter. De Los Santos made his Pelicans debut on Saturday night, surrendering a run on a hit, a walk, and a hit batter in 0.2 innings. He also struck out one. Kela made his Double-A debut on Sunday with two scoreless innings in the Frisco RoughRiders loss to Midland. ROLLER-COASTER: Over the last ten ballgames, the club has alternated wins and losses. Prior to that, the Pelicans had been streaking either hot or cold. After four straight losses to start the year they put together streaks of eight (wins), two (losses), and six (wins). ONE RUN WOES: The Birds won the first four one-run games they played in this season. They lost three games on their last road trip, all by one run. They are 4-3 now in one-run games. The team started 6-1 in games decided by two or fewer runs and are now just 7-5 in those games. FREE TICKETS EVERYONE: Myrtle Beach has posted the second best ERA in the league so far this season, yet has handed out its fair share of walks. The team has issued 135 walks, most in the Carolina League and the four-most in MiLB. VICTOR PAYANO is tied for the MiLB lead in walks (27) with Dodgers High-A hurler Fabio Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, California League). The team 4.98 BB/9 is the highest rate in the minors. HIGH FIVES: Five runs has been the magic number this season. When the Pelicans score five or more runs, they are undefeated at 13-0. They are just 3-11 when scoring fewer than five runs. SIXTH SENSE: The sixth inning has been oddly kind to the Pelicans this year. They are outscoring their opponents 17-0 in the inning. The ninth inning has been the team’s worst inning statistically, being outscored 16-9. CHANGING ROLES: CODY BUCKEL has now made two appearances out of the bullpen since coming off the disabled list. In both outings, he tossed a scoreless inning, and on Friday he had his first walkless outing since September of 2012. WINNING THE GROUND GAME: Myrtle Beach hit into three ground ball double plays in the series, yet they have still into the fewest in the league (11). The defense has turned a league-high 28 double plays, three coming last night and six over the last two days. E-ESH!: With 45 errors this season, the Pelicans are tied with Winston- Salem for the most errors in the league in the category and tied for the fourth-most in MiLB. They have made blunders in each of the last seven games, with multiple errors in five of those games. The club also leads the league in passed balls with seven; all of them have been committed by JORGE ALFARO. Alfaro has made eight errors which is the most among the Rangers minor leaguers as well. BOLING FOR HITS: Right fielder ROYCE BOLINGER has been a consistent bat for the Pelicans all season. He has been particularly torrid of late. An 11-for-22 (.500) homestand from April 15-21 sparked the beginning of a particularly good stretch for the Scottsdale, Arizona native. Bolinger hit safely in five of the six games on the road trip and three of the four games on the recent homestand. He is hitting .347, third in the league and first among qualifying Rangers farmhands. THE FINAL BECKONING: PRESTON BECK just had an eight-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday night.. It was the active team high. The streak was tied with Odubel Herrera for the longest hit steak by a Pelicans hitter this season. THE HENDERSON HAMMER: Joey Gallo earned his second Carolina League Player of the Week award on Monday. He hit .364, going 8-for-22 during the week with three homers, a double, a triple, 9 RBI, seven runs scored, and eight walks. Gallo has homered multiple times in a game on 11 occasions in his career (two in 2012, 7 in 2013, 2 this season) and on consecutive days 21 times (13 in 2012, six in 2013, two this year). The slugger homered on Thursday night in the 9-5 over Frederick, sparking the seven-run seventh inning with a solo shot to start the frame. Gallo leads the Rangers system and current minor leaguers in homers, tied with Houston’s Jon Singleton (Triple-A Oklahoma City). He led all of minor league baseball in 2013 with 40 home runs. He has more homers than 8 minor league teams, including one team in the Carolina League (Wilmington). Among qualifying players, he is fifth in the minors in slugging, sixth in OPS and tenth in runs scored. STRUTTING THEIR FEATHERS: The Pelicans roster currently features six players highlighted in Baseball America’s list of the Rangers’ Top 30 prospects, including four of the top 5, and three in the overall top 100 in MiLB. Catcher JORGE ALFARO (ranked No. 2 in the Rangers Top 30, No. 54 in the overall Top 100), NICK WILLIAMS (3, 97) and third baseman JOEY GALLO (4, 60) rank in the top 100. The other four players in the Texas Top 30 are RHPs ALEX “CHI CHI” GONZALEZ (5), JOSE LECLERC (16), and LHP ALEXANDER CLAUDIO (27). The publication also tabbed Gallo in their Top Tools superlatives as the “Best Power Hitter” and “Best Infield Arm”. Unranked in the top 30, CHRIS GARIA is the “Fastest Baserunner” and PRESTON BECK has the “Best Outfield Arm.” CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK, traded from Oakland in December, was ranked No. 18 in the Athletics’ top 30 by BA. ABOUT ANDREWThe only South Carolina native on the roster, Andrew Faulkner is in his first season with the Pelicans after spending the last two years a state to the north with the Hickory Crawdads.

Before signing with the Rangers for a reported $125,000, Faulkner signed with the Univ. of South Carolina to play collegiately.

DATE OPPONENT RESULT IP H R ER BB SO HR WP P/S4/26/14 at Wilmington ND, 4-5 (L) 6.1 4 3 1 1 6 0 0 96/64(Last start): After facing only one over the minimum through three innings, Faulkner committed a costly error in the fourth inning that led to two unearned runs. He struck out a season-high six batters and continued to post good numbers against Wilmington (2 ER/16.1 IP). Faulkner also pitched two shutout innings in relief in game one of the Frederick series, bumped off of his schedule because of Tuesday’s cancellation.

2014 SEASONAndrew began the season with an outing of the bullpen and has slid back into his more comfortable role. Primarily a starter in 2013, Faulkner piggybacked with Luis Parra, alternating starting and long-relief roles for two starts before being placed into his own turn in the rotation when Cody Buckel was placed on the DL (4/18). Faulkner has the lowest WHIP among starters on the team (1.08) and the best strikeout to walk ratio (25:5).

NOTEABLE 2014 STARTSApril 13 - at SAL - Roughed up for three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings in his first startApril 20 - vs. WIL - Tossed a season-high six innings, scatter six hits for just one run.

2013 SEASONLogging the 2nd-most starts on the Hickory staff despite not joining the club until May 15, Faulkner went 5-5 with a 3.46 ERA as a starter and 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP) as a reliever.

He allowed one earned run over 4.1 innings in relief in his season debut but made a start in his second outing In that first start, on May 21, he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings vs. Boston’s Low A Greenville Drive. He continued a strong start, going 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA (8 ER/26.0 IP) over his first 5 starts

Faulkner faltered slightly at the end of the season, going 1-2 with a 6.92 ERA over final three outings, including two starts.

REPERTOIREFaulkner throws a fastball, curveball, splitter, and changeup. The fastball is around 89-92 mph and can touch 93 with some arm-side run. He throws a split-finger changup in high school that he will still throw (lows 80s), but has added a straight changeup since signing as a pro that ranges from 82-86 mph. His curveball is slurvy at 78-82 mph.

Despite not being ranked in Baseball America Top 30 Rangers prospects, the publication does list him as the top ranked left-handed starting pitcher in the Rangers system.

Control has been the Achilles heel for Payano (career 5.3 BB/9 IP entering 2014). He has posted good strikeout rates, with a K/9 rate of better than 8.0 K/9 in each of his four professional seasons.

SEASON NOTES: Payano was the Opening Night starter. He went just two-plus innings and has walked 27 in his six outings (117 BF, 23%), tied for the most walks by any pitcher in the minors.
