Thousands walked into the Jain Temple at Mathala Narayanan Road, Mylapore, on Monday, Sep 10 to take part in a celebration to mark eight days of Paryushan or fasting and prayers.

The temple, which was open till 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning, was decked up with flowers and lights. Inside the temple, the floors were decorated with colourful themed rangolis, some about temples, while others about jain traditions. Sugarcanes were tied up to the pillars there.

Rajshri Shah, a resident of Desikachari Road has been a regular at the temple for a few years now. She says, “The deities were decorated with ornaments, mostly semi precious stones like the onyx and swarovski crystals. We also had silver flowers polished with gold”.

Two important rituals were observed on Monday, says Rajshri. “The first is the

cradling ceremony, very similar to what is done during Krishna Jayanthi. That evening, the idol of Lord Mahavir was taken out on a procession to the home of a devotee at R. K. Salai where poojas were done and bhajans were sung. The idol was brought back to the temple on Tuesday morning”.

The other ritual she says is based on the 14 dreams of Lord Mahavir’s mother. “At the temple, we have 14 silver idols of the sun, moon, a garland, animals, a golden vase and several others. The devotees choose whichever they want, place it on their head and circumbulate the hall on the first floor. It is their way of spiritually connecting with the deity”.

The festivities, which began on Sep 6, ended on Thursday. On the last day, devotees took up the role of sadhus and stayed at the dharmashala at the temple premises to fast and pray.

Odhiyam - Lannea coromandelica - It sheds its thick canopy of leaves in sum-mer; its wood is used to make catamarans and its gum is used in confectionery.

Gulmohur - Delonix regia - This fragile tree, a native of Madagascar, has beautiful red flowers; the seed pods are used as musical instruments

Kuthirai badam - Sterculia foetida - Leaves, bark and seeds used in traditional medicine, it is home to the trap door spider among others.

Arasamaram - Ficus religiosa - also called Bodhi or Aswatha, it is a sacred tree for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. Belongs to the fig family.

Nuna Maram - Morinda tinctoria - Associated with traditional agricultural implements and toys since the Sangam period, it is used to produce dyes for saffron clothes of monks!

Many of the trees featured on this page are ‘foreign’. How did these propagate?

Dr. T. D. Babu, an expert and trustee of Nizhal explains -

‘The foreign trees have been introduced both intentionally, or accidentally by rulers and traders. Many have become naturalised and co-exist with the indigenous species. Our only concern is that these exotic species shouldn’t outnumber the local species.

As trees are habitat to many living beings and the association between the trees and fuana is species specific. Hence we need to restore local diversity through planting and nurturing of indigenous species. Again, we should plant even the local species at the right locations. Residents should follow the planting guidelines which are available on the websites of Chennai Corporation and of Nizhal.

EXPLORING TREES IN THE BACKYARDBy Our Staff Reporter

What happens when you go on a Tree Walk in your neighbourhood?

You get to know the trees better, you begin to appreciate their place and function and you perhaps take some effort to nurture and protect them and grow more.

In mid-July, on a Sunday morning some 14 people joined the Tree Walk on Prithvi Avenue in Alwarpet, hosted by Nizhal, a city-based NGO.

Nizhal has been working steadfastly to educate people on trees and motivate state and people organisations to grow the green cover. Naturally. Not with melas and jamborees.

The Tree Walks are one of the NGO’s aims to get people involved locally.

The Prithivi Avenue Tree Walk saw some children join their parents for an hour. And in that leisurely pace of re-discovery, those who attended the event went home better educated. (Featured on this page are some trees seen in Alwarpet)

If your neighbourhood group is keen to host a Tree Walk, ping Nizhal. Contact 9500034187.

If you are keen to plant trees, Nizhal has a list of reccommendations - http://nizhaltn.org/images/nizhal_tree_lists.pdf

America Tamil Sangam helps to build restrooms at two local schoolsBy Our Staff Reporter

Two Chennai Corporation schools in Mylapore have benefitted from efforts made by wellwishers in America. America Tamil Sangam and Shri Vari Foundation helped in the construction of restrooms for girls. The project was formally launched at a function held at MGR Janaki College this week.

Dr. V. Saroja, Tamil Nadu minister for social welfare and nutritious noon meals program was the chief guest.

The two schools adopted by the US-based associations are - Chennai Primary School in Veeraperumal Koil Street, Mylapore and Chennai High School in Karaneeswarar Pagoda Street, San Thome. One school did not have a restroom for girl students while the other had dilapidated toilets forcing many girls to control urination till they reach home in the evening.

Chennai High School with classes from 6th to 10th with 72 students has achieved 100 percent results in State Board Std.10

exams continuously for the past 8 years. Chennai Primary School has classes from LKG to Std.5 with 145 students whose parents are mostly uneducated street ven-dors, daily-wage laborers and housemaids.

Dr. V. Maithreyan, Rajya Sabha MP and Dr. J. Jayavardhan, Lok Sabha MP of south Chennai, offered their felicitations. Dr. R. Nataraj, Mylapore MLA, who pre-sided over the function appealed to Tamils living abroad to invest in the state as well take up public charitable work. Novelist Sivasankari was also present.

Prakash M. Swamy, president of America Tamil Sangam said two US-based service organizations – American Associa-tion of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) QLI and Indian Association of Long Island, New York, had joined hands to contribute to the project. Future plans include provid-ing sanitary napkins to girl students in the two chosen schools, honing up the skill set of teachers, introducing smart class rooms and sprucing up the campuses.

S. Ravishankar, adviser of the Trust, proposed a vote of thanks.

Mathangi Narayan, a resident of Mylapore and a second-year media studies student of MOP Vaishnav College for Women in Nungambakkam had a surprise experience this week when she was on South Mada Street, Mylapore.

She was exploring the mada streets to shoot photos for a college project on Sri Vinayaga Chathurthi celebrations.

On South Mada Street, while clicking portraits of shoppers and hawkers, one of the hawkers, T. Murugan asked her to take a picture of himself, which she did.

Murugan then handed her his visiting card and as Mathangi recalls, told her that she could call him if she needed any help in the Mylapore area.

Says the college student, “I haven’t come across people who are strangers we meet on a street and offer help. I was amazed.”

Murugan is a longtime hawker of vegetables: his stall is located close to the Leo Coffee office on South Mada Street. Murugan says he came to the city in search of work, found a odd job in Mylapore and started hawking vegetables in 1989. He lives on Mosque Street.

At festival time, Murugan sells images of Vinayaka and Krishna, decorations and fruits - anything that has a demand. Says Murugan,”I like helping people. I came up the hard way and if we can we must help others.”

Amudha Anand, principal and correspondent of M. P. Aanandh Matric-ulation Higher Sec-ondary School passed away on August 31. She was 56.

“My parents started the school 25 years ago with just five students in pre-KG in 1993”, said Janani Lakshmi, the only daughter of Amudha who is also the principal of this school.

“My parents gave up their home to build the school there and moved to D’ Silva Road. After my father’s death in 2000, my mother made his dream come true by building on the early years of the school”.

Talking about her mother Janani said, “My mother studied in St. Ebba’s School up to the eight standard after which she got married. It was on her husband’s insistence that she completed her studies after her marriage. She did her M. A. in economics and M.Ed and was currently pursuing her M.Phil.”

Having lost her husband in her thirties, Amudha believed in herself and took hold of the reigns of the school.

It was the couple’s goal to provide English medium school education to students from middle and lower-middle sections of the community. Today, this school in CIT Colony, Mylapore has some 1500 students on its rolls.

Amudha was keen on community service too. She was a traffic police warden and also a Rotary Club member.

Amudha had won awards given by private bodies and the Dr. Radhakrishnan Award given by Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary & Higher Secondary Association. She was also presented the ‘scroll of honour’ by Probus Club in 2015.

“The magic potion she used to lift the school up to what it is today was sweat, deter-mination and hard work, “said Rama Ramji, the parent of a student of the school.

“She was sponsoring the educational efforts of many economically downtrod-den students and involved herself in a lot of philanthropical activities all through her life”, said Rama.

Senior citizen’s plea to Railways

The Railways is not caring for the basic requirements of its passen-gers. When I visited the Thirumylai MRTS station reservation office in January 2018, I found that the booking counters were reduced to 3 from 5 (including the counter for senior citizens).

During my recent visit, I found that only one counter was func-tioning at 8.45 a.m. At the senior citizens counter there was a notice saying that it would function only from 10 a.m.

There were some 50 people waiting at this office and senior citizens too were advised to sit in the queue. At 9 a.m. another counter opened, but the first clerk went for breakfast at 9.30 a.m. Fortunately, another staff asked senior citizens to form a queue and served us before the appointed time. Seniors book their tickets only at such offices and we hope the Railways assist us. At Mylapore, the Railways can open 3 counters at 8.00 a.m, including the one for senior citizens.

The past week I have been travelling across south Kanara, now Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka. Much of these travels help us understand people and places better.

Mangalore, now Mangaluru is always my base. On Wednesday evening, I had a few young guests

- students of architecture and their teacher. This group had studied and documented one of the most beautiful churches on this coast - Rosario Cathedral or the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Now, we were exploring ways to curate a Walk of this heritage space and I volunteered to share my experience with the young ones.

The cathedral stands close to the sea coast, in a part of the town which soaks in history and can be considered to be the womb of Mangalore.

It traces its history to the times in the 16th century when the Portuguese got a firm foothold of a strategic zone in this part of the west coast, set up its trading post and also built a place of worship and prayer.

The church of today though was built in 1910. And every time I travel to Mangalore I visit the Bunder zone on this coast and the cathedral that is located here.

This week though, the campus was abuzz. For, on Saturday there is to be a grand event - the episcopal ordi-nation of the new bishop of Mangalore’s Catholic diocese.

Over 25 bishops of dioceses across India are expected to participate and under the giant pandal that was being erected on the day we were visiting, some 10,000 nuns and priests and people will attend this unique religious event.

As the Catholic community here looks forward to the grand event at Rosario Cathedral, it is also bothered about the developments in Jalandhar and in Kerala. Of stories that are emanating from serious allegations made by a nun that she was sexually assaulted on many occasions by a senior bishop. There have been allegations and counter allegations, nasty comments and colourful stories, well fanned by the media.

The community though seems disturbed. How will people now look at priests and nuns as

skeletons drop out and misdemeanours are made public? Will the faith and grace of people be affected by such unsavoury developments among the religious?

A priest or a nun occupies a unique and important position in the church. And in the community. Beyond religious duties, he/she also has to guide the flock, set an example, be the fountainhead of ideas and practices and speak up when it is required.

But how equipped are priests and nuns for the new world?

And what steps does the Church take to discuss and debate sensitive issues, provide training and fora for its priests and nuns?

Is the Church still burying its head in the ground or looking the other way or is it prepared to be transparent and deal with issues like abuse and sexual misconduct, fraud and misbehaviour?

These are questions that the community has begun to ask.

There are all kinds of pulls, pressures and temptations that priests and nuns have to face. Nepotism, corruption and highhandedness exists in the Church.

One supposes that the spiritual life and training prepares priests and nuns to face such pulls and evils.

But then, they too are human.

Queen Mary’s College Alumnae Association’s clarification

With reference to a news report in Mylapore Times dated Sept.1 under the head-ing ‘QMC Staff and Alumnae Association to celebrate cen-tenary’, we wish to bring it to your attention the following.

In the year 1976-77, the Registrar of Societies has passed the order that the Old Students Association has become defunct. This came to the notice only in 2013.

A resolution was passed on 10-07-2014 by the office bearers and committee members of the Old Students Association, as per the advice of the IG of Registration. The Old Students Association was converted to Queen Mary’s College Alumnae Association. So QMCAA (Regn No. 97/2014. dt 28/08/2014) is the only successor of the Queen Mary’s College Old Students Association. This is recognised by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Whereas, SOSA was registered on 27-10-2015, QMCAA is still active and we conducted our 3rd Annual General Body

Meeting on 31.08.2018 with the permission of the principal of the Queen Mary’s College, inside the campus under instructions from the principal secretary, Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. Necessary resolutions were passed as per the agenda including passing of audited accounts for the year 2016-2017.

This being the facts of our association, the news report is misguiding and misleading for it gives the impression that the SOSA is the original association for alumnae of QMC.

Tree on C. V. Raman Road poses danger

A large avenue tree is seen protruding on to the busy C. V. Raman Road in Alwarpet (near Arti Scans). This is causing problems for motorists and traffic jams here. We request the local unit of Chennai Corporation to chop the branches of this tree for safety purposes.

Discuss this: ban on traffic on mada streets at festival time

Festival time brings out the best and worst in the mada streets around Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore. And the season has started with the Vinayaka Chathurti celebration. Hawkers increase and the sale of flowers, decorations, images, kolu dolls, foodstuff and fruits is spread on pavements and even on the road at times.

There is chaos on the mada streets in addition to the traffic of people who go to the shops on these streets.

Will it be a good idea to ban traffic on the mada streets for a few hours at festival season time? Mylaporeans and Traffic Police may discuss this idea.

Two teachers from local schools received the Dr. Radhakrishnan state award for ‘Best Teacher’ at an event held in the city on September 5.

Sujatha Pandian, a French and English teacher at San Thome Higher Secondary School, San Thome, has more than two decades of experience at the school.

In 2014, she was the only teacher from Tamil Nadu selected for a teachers training programme held in France and fully funded by the French Embassy in Delhi.

She is also a recipient of the district award for ‘Best Teacher’ received from the Nilgiris and Coimbatore district administration in 1993.

Sujatha says, “In the process of teaching the stu-dents, we also learn something new from them every year. Most of the students at San Thome School have issues at home and face financial problems. I try to counsel these students whenever I can. More than the students who excel, I believe it is the students who are not so good who need our attention and motivation.”

Sujatha is a resident of Prof. Sanjeevi Street, Mylapore. Contact - 9840280778.

R. Vasuki, the physical education director at Lady Sivaswami Ayyar Girls School, Mylapore joined the school as a physical education teacher in 2003. In 2010, she was promoted to her current position and she has been instrumental in expanding the sports activity on campus.

She says, “When I joined the school we just had a volleyball team. But we introduced ball badminton and athletics and now have good teams in these dis-ciplines. We couldn’t have done it without the sup-port of the management and our athletics coaches.”

She says she would like to see her students take part in the Olympics. She adds, “Parents too need to understand that times are changing and that fitness is a necessity. Many of them don’t encourage sports beyond a certain point, especially among girls in class X and XII and that needs to change”.

Vasuki is a resident of P. S. Sivaswami Salai, Mylapore.
