EDUCATION

Self-esteem is the feeling thatchildren have when they believein their abilities and talents, andwhen they feel loved, valuedand accepted by other people.Self-esteem is extremely impor-tant to the happiness and well-being of children. It gives themthe power to believe in them-selves, the confidence to makenew friends and the emotionalstrength to deal with stress andfrustration. When their self-esteem is high, they will learnand do more.

The development of self-esteem begins atbirth. It is strongly influenced by a nurturingattachment to a sensitive and responsiveparent. When babies feel loved and wanted, they are more able to face the challenges ofthe world when they become toddlers.

Positive relationships with siblings, friends, caregivers and teachers can help childrenform a healthy self-image. However, parentsplay the major role in the development ofself-esteem. If children feel good aboutthemselves, and how their parents perceivethem, their self-esteem will shine.

Helping your child to develop strong self-esteem is one of the most importantthings that you can do as a parent. Here's how you can help:

1 Talk to your child, askquestions, make eye contactand use plenty of bodylanguage and touch.

2 Spend quality time with yourchild. A few minutes ofundivided attention everynow and then will makeyour child feel special.

3 Encourage, admire and valueyour child’s interests and opinions, even if they differ from yours.

4 Don’t expect your child to excel atthings just because you did. This can bea tough call if your expectations arehigh.

5 Recognise and appreciate your child’stalents and build on them. This willboost your child’s self-esteem and carryover into other endeavours.

6 Be generous with praise when yourchild does something well or attemptsto succeed. This could be anything fromgetting dressed in the morning, toplaying sports or telling a story.

7 Involve your child in household choresand responsibilities. This will help yourchild feel valued and important.

8 Frame your child’s artwork, badges andtrophies. Seeing them on display willgive your child a lift when their self-esteem falters.

9 Avoid making comparisons with otherchildren. Your child is unique and willdevelop at his or her own pace.

10 Avoid criticism that takes the formof ridicule or shame. Help yourchild make light of things that donot work out as planned.

11 Keep a close eye on your child’sfriends. If your child feelsintimidated or bullied, this canshake confidence and lower self-worth.

12 Ensure that your home is child-friendly and welcoming. Seeingyour child happy will be well worththe effort of tidying up the mess atthe end of the day.

Even if you become short on patience andencouragement at times, a predominantpattern of nurturing and caring is whatreally counts. However, if you areexperiencing problems that affect yourability to parent effectively, get help from a

professional. It canhelp to talk tosomeone who canoffer support andencouragement toboth you and yourchild.

Urban Gate work with parents, teachers andanyone working with children to create an outdoorlearning experience, using green open spaces andnatural resources.

American journalist and writerRichard Louv, in his book LastChild in the Woods, talks about“Nature Deficit Disorder.” andhis fear that if children are separatedfrom nature, lifetime effects mayensue.

Urban Gate is passionate to seetoday’s children reconnect withnature bringing balance to theirlives. For varying reasons manychildren spend more hours indoorsand can become disconnected fromnature and natural experiences.

Urban Gate founder Sheila Rosssays “Family development throughreconnection with nature is soimportant in creating andmaintaining balance in all our lives.”

Urban Gate offer training days

using the Outdoor classroom. “Notall children thrive in the indoorclassroom and not all children learnby listening” says Sheila.

The workshop briefly exploreskinaesthetic learning style andlearning through observation, reflection and the benefit of theoutdoor classroom for all subjectsincluding Mathematics, Science,Geography, Arts and Crafts.

Do you remember playing in the park or visitingthe woods? These children are out bilberrypicking at the Lickey Hills Country Park. It seemsthey found other uses for the bilberries besideseating them!

Feel Good Friends is the award winningcompany whose fun, educational products helpchildren feel good about themselves and theirworld.

We have just launched ‘Feel Good Games’, which is a 6-in-1 cardgame based on feelings. The games include snap, pairs, opposites,

‘Only Roly’ and ‘MyFeeling’. There is also a

new A1-size Feelingsposter in the range.

Teaching children aboutfeelings and how to expressthemselves from a youngage gives them importantlife skills that will benefit

them throughout theirlife. These skills arecritical for their well-being and for building

relationships. The first step in coping with a feeling is identifying it,which is why it is so important to explore the language of feelingswith children, expanding their vocabulary of feeling words andtheir meanings. When children learn to express themselves they willbe better able to calm themselves andbounce back after conflictand disappointment, and they will get alongbetter with others.

Feel Good Friendsresources are great toolsto help children becomefamiliar with differentfeelings in a fun way. Andas well as having funplaying the games, thereare all sorts of other ways ofusing them. For example, using the cardsor poster for children to point to how they feel if they are unable toexpress the feeling.

Competition Fun!We have 3 sets of the new game and posters to to give away to MyFamily readers. To enter, email SMILE under the subject headerMY FAMILY to [email protected] along with yourname and contact details. Closing date for entries is 30th April2012.

The world of learning difficultiescan be a minefield for parents totraverse, often with new condi-tions and symptoms being dis-covered. Explore Learning haswritten a guide to dyscalculiaand how,as parents, you can helpyour child.

Dyscalculia can be identified as a difficulty inthe reception, production or comprehensionof number facts or spatial information. Putsimply it is a difficulty understanding basicnumber facts and manipulating numbers.Children with dyscalculic tendencies canoften display great frustration and anxietywhen faced with mathematical problems.

Learning difficulties such as dyscalculia haveno ‘quick fix’but they can be overcome.Hereare six tips that can help make maths moreaccessible to your child, whether they havebeen formally diagnosed with dyscalculia, orare just finding the subject tricky:

Boost Confidence by giving lots of praiseand reward for the effort your child is puttingin. Showing your child that their input is justas important as the outcome can greatlyreduce the stress and anxiety created whentrying to get the answer right first time.

Make maths relevant by exposing them toreal life situations.Try giving them a handfulof change and ‘charge’them for dinner as if ina restaurant, or challenge them to guess howmany minutes it will take to complete simpleevery-day tasks.

Dyscalculia:finding the right supportfor your child

“After working with a childthat is finding maths tricky, the most rewarding part of myday is hearing them show offto Mum and Dad a conceptthat has just ‘clicked’ withthem! A priceless feeling! ”Lise McCaffery, Explore Learning tutor

Work at the right pace by usingindividualised support programmes that onlymove on once a topic has been mastered.Agood support plan will move at a pace thatyour child is comfortable with, ensuring theyhave retained the basic facts beforeadvancing to more complex activities.

Boost enthusiasm by making learning fun.Playing puzzles and jigsaws as a family canimprove your child’s spatial awareness, whilstthe use of technology such as computers canmake a tricky subject become moreaccessible and engaging.

Break tasks down into smaller chunks aschildren with dyscalculia can struggle tofollow tasks with lots of instructions.Showingthem just one step at a time can make thewhole task seem much less daunting.

Repetition and practice are crucial anddoing extra-curricular activities that reiteratethe work that has been done in the classroomcan really help your child to keep up in theclassroom.

In our experience of working with childrenwith dyscalculia, with the help of competenttutors, a lot of effort and the right attitude, every child can make progress in maths andregain their confidence.

All families are different, butwhen it comes down to it thereare some basic requirementsfor a good family trip. Mostfamily breaks run smoothly ifwell planned with all membersof the family taken intoaccount. Ultimately this willmean that you can spend moretime doing the things you loveand less time discussing whereand what you will be doing.

The pleasure is in the detailIf this is your first trip with your children, planfor a slower pace than you might usuallyattempt. Be realistic about what you can coverwith little ones in tow – the less you feel youhave to pack in, the more enjoyable and stress-free the holiday.

If you are travelling with a small child a pram orbuggy can be useful even if your child iswalking. It will serve as a place for them to restwhen covering a lot of ground or a makeshiftbed when they are worn out. An all-terrainversion is worth the investment if you are goingto be walking a lot or on unpaved paths.

If you are travelling with anotherfamily, or adults, discuss whateach person wants to dobefore you go and howmuch time you would like tospend together. Come to anagreement about the wayyou'll split the bills andarrange how chores will beshared. Discuss taking turnschildminding and dedicatechildcare responsibilitiesduring travel.

Tips for Travelling with ChildrenKeeping little ones safeIt doesn't matter how good a parent you are, itcan happen the best of us! You look away for ajust a second and in an instant your child hasvanished. Your heart races and your stomachsinks. It's an awful feeling. Right?

Always designate a meeting point in each newplace, in case anyone is separated from thegroup. If it's likely you'll be in dense crowds, promise a group reward if everyone staystogether.

A wireless child locator system is an ideal wayto keep track of your child in crowded placessuch as shopping centres, airports, theme parksor sporting arenas. The parent carries a trackingdevice – while the child wears a separate partof the device. Should the distance between thechild and the tracker exceed the user-definedrange, or if the bracelet is removed, an alarmsounds and a bleeper will help track down yourlittle one.

In case of emergencies, an identity braceletdetailing your child's medical condition, treatment and their doctor's name is useful ifyour child has a disability, hidden medicalcondition or serious allergy. A great range ofbrightly coloured and sporty identity bands forkids are available from medicalert.org.uk.

Always use a car seat whentravelling by car regardless ofthe regulations in yourdestination. A universal

model is a good ideaif you are using a

variety ofvehicles or hiring acar.

For general guidelines and information aboutfitting child's car and booster seats, go tochildcarseats.org.uk. For children with adisability or special needs www.crelling.comcan provide seats and harnesses for a variety oftravel requirements including aircraft travel.

ChildcareLook into supervised childcare, such as kids'clubs before you go. Ask what activities thechildren will be involved in, how many childrenare cared for and whether groups are splitaccording to age. Be prepared to check it outyourself when you arrive and make sure that allthe necessary paperwork including CRB checksare in place. If anything seems amiss, beprepared to cancel your plans and start lookingfor alternatives.

Having your own personal Nanny can opennew doors: cottage/villa holidays can becomerealistic possibilities, instead of ‘dreams’ for thefuture, when the children have grown up. Ifyou holiday with other families, you couldconsider sharing a Nanny to cut costs.

With My Travelling Nanny you have anextra pair of hands, ears and eyes when youneed them – someone else to help do the sun-creaming, spend endless hours in the pool, singHumpty Dumpty or wipe sticky fingers. Youmight even get some breathing space – which

as well as family fun is what holidays are allabout.

Breastfeeding Adviceby Breastfeeding Counsellor Claire Burns

The first time I breastfed wasover 13 years ago when my sonwas born. My experience was agood one and he latched onvery easily from birth. By thetime I breastfed my 4th baby 3years ago things had got a littlemore rocky! He too latched oneasily from birth but when wecame home we had a fewunexpected problems.

A couple of weeks in it became very painful. At first I thought it was sore nipples, which isnormal in the beginning, but after a week orso of trial and error and a visit to my GP, wediscovered Toby and I had thrush and werepassing it backwards and forwards betweeneach other. Some Nystan, a few tears due topainful feeds and a great deal ofperseverance meant within a week we wereback on track. There were a lot of timesduring that period when I contemplatedgiving up so I can completely understandwhy so many new mums decide formula isthe way forward.

78% of UK mums start out givingbreastfeeding a go which is actually a goodchunk of people, but by 6 weeksapproximately 52% of those have moved toformula. There are lots of different reasonswhy new mums stop breastfeeding orchoose not to breastfeed at all. 75% ofmums who initially breastfeed but havestopped by 6 weeks would have liked tocontinue for longer but many feel it is eithertoo painful or that the support just isn’tthere.

Some of the most common reasons forstopping breastfeeding are sore nipples, inadequate milk supply, the baby havingdifficulties in latching on or feeding and aperception that the baby isn’t satisfied, which often isn’t the case.

With the right support most problems canbe overcome but support needs to be thereright from the start, reassuring newmums that these issues are normaland no question is a silly one.

Another fear many new mumshave is breastfeeding in public.Nobody likes to feel exposedor embarrassed, andbreastfeeding is a completelynatural thing – but breastfeedingpublicly often brings out strongopinions from both sides causingconflict and unnecessary stress. Before embarking on publicbreastfeeding I would alwaysadvise new mums topractise at homewhen friends andfamily come tovisit. This way youcan feel confidentwhich in turnmakes you naturallymore discreet. Being inthe middle of arestaurant and havingyour breast pad fallout onto the table isembarrassing foranyone but you aremore likely to brush itoff if you are confidentabout breastfeedingfirst.

I do think in the last fewyears things are gettingbetter though. Supportgroups like La LecheLeague and NationalChildbirth Trust were bothformed and have beensupporting new mums since

1956. However in recent years they havebeen promoted more successfully, givingnew mums the facility to talk to someoneabout ANY of their worries when they needit, which is a vital ingredient to the successof this type of support.

Breastfeeding is a very individual decision, and doesn’t work out for everyone but

at least whatever you decide thesupport is in place to help.

You and your baby are special. Childbirth should be anempowering and positive event in your life.

With Hypnobirthing, the birth of your baby can be a calm, comfortable, relaxed and rewarding experience where

you are in control.

Hypnobirthing is a complete antenatal course

www.bumpsandmore.co.uk

Hypnobirthing is a complete antenatal coursewhich teaches a range of gentle self-hypnosistechniques, muscle relaxation, visualisations andbreathing techniques for mums-to-be and theirbirthing partners.

Hypnobirthing helps parents-to-be to discover and acknowledgetheir fears and anxieties about birth and parenting, then helps tomanage or eliminate the tension caused by these fears, preparingboth mind and body for birth and beyond.

Birthing partners also learn all of the techniques to enable them todeepen and support the birthing mum's levels of relaxation, empowering them both to feel more aware, calm, confident and incontrol, in order to have a more relaxed, positive and enjoyablebirthing experience.

The Advantages of using Hypnobirthing include:

Less need for pain medication Increases the release endorphins and comfort levels Eliminate or greatly reduces fears surrounding birth Shorter labour times Reduces tiredness & fatigue during labour Fewer interventions and surgical births Promotes bonding of mother, baby and birthing partner Less incidence of post natal depression Babies tend to feed and sleep better and are generally calmer More rapid post natal recovery

Sounds too good to be true? Some parents are very sceptical at first but here’s what some parentshave said:

“We cannot wait for baby to arrive & feel completely calmand relaxed about what to expect of the birth”

“The whole theory and method just makes so much sense,I really enjoyed practising the relaxation and breathingtechniques but was also pleased that the course coveredother pregnancy and labour matters.”

“My baby is now 6 weeks old and Icouldn't have wished for a betterbirthing experience. I went into hospitalfeeling calm and prepared, andWilliam is extremely contented (Ibelieve) as a result.”

Pregnancy should be a blissful, happy and exciting time – thereare a few things that might stressyou out but eating should not beone of them. Sometimes theadvice that you get from friends, family or even total strangers canbe rather confusing as there are alot of old wives’ tales out there! If you are wondering what’s okand what’s not ok to eat checkout my guide . . .

Foods to Avoid

EGGS . . . raw egg may be tainted withSalmonella and bacteria that can cause fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Watch out forrestaurant made Caesar salad dressing, homemade eggnog, raw cookie dough andsoft scrambled eggs.

SUSHI . . . with the exception of Californianrolls and other cooked items, sushi is not safewhilst you’re expecting because it maycontain illness-inducing parasites

MILK AND JUICES . . . make sureeverything is pasteurised – this process killsbacteria and toxins. Most products sold instores are usually pasteurised; but alwayscheck the labels.

CAFFEINE . . . when it comes to caffeinethe studies done can be rather confusing . . .some say it can damage the foetus others sayit does not. My personal advice would be toallow yourself a couple of cups of coffee ortea a day; so grab your coat and head for thenearest Starbucks.

SOFT CHEESES . . . they usually harbourListeria. Listerioses is an illness caused bybacteria which can be passed on to the foetusleading to miscarriage, premature death, oreven stillbirth.

FISH . . . it contains fatty acid which containsOmega 3 great for brain development. Don’teat more than two to three servings a week.

The Good Stuff

Now on to the good stuff . . . what you caneat. During your pregnancy your appetite cansoar . . . it’s important however to make sureyou get more nutrients NOT more calories.Having said all that, doctors recommend thatwhilst breastfeeding you add 500 calories toyour daily intake.

Always eat a well-balanced daily diet andinclude the following…

PROTEIN . . . eat a serving of protein richfood every day, such as lean red meat, poultryor fish.

CALCIUM . . . adequate calcium intake inpregnancy is very important to avoidOsteoporosis in later life. Two to Threeservings per day is needed.

FOLATE (FOLIC ACID) . . . Eat daily –increased Folate is needed for the first 4months of pregnancy, it is found in leafygreen vegetables, pulses, liver, oranges andpoultry.

IRON . . . necessary for the production ofred blood cells in both you and your unbornbaby – iron rich foods are red meat, pulses, raisins, spinach and dried fruits. Eat daily.

FIBRE . . . increased intake of fibre fromfruit, vegetables and wholegrain isrecommended daily to avoid constipation inpregnancy.

Requirements for Breastfeeding

Mothers who are breast-feeding should havea well-balanced diet especially rich in vitaminsA, C and Calcium.

CALCIUM . . . mothers who are producingmilk should make sure they get 1250mg ofcalcium each day. Between 2 to 8 per cent oftotal body calcium is used for the productionof breast milk.

VITAMIN AND MINERALSUPPLEMENTS . . . below is the table ofthe vitamin requirements for all mothers to be(mg=milligram, mcg=microgram)

Vitamin A 350mcg MAGNESIUM 50mg

NIACIN 30mg ZINC 6mg

FOLATE 60mcg

Whilst breast-feeding some substances fromfoods that the mother eats may affect thebaby in adverse ways, such as irritability, colic, bloating, wind and diarrhoea. The foods thatcan often cause these symptoms are milk, dairy produce, eggs, wheat, citrus fruits, coffee, chocolate, garlic, cabbage andcucumber. My advice is still have them but insmaller quantities.

Celebrate InternationalWomen’s Day on the 8th MarchEvery year on the 8th March, the worldcelebrates International Women’s Day,recognising and applaudingwomen’s achievementsas well as for observingand highlighting genderinequalities and issues.

Women's organisations andgovernments around the worldobserve IWD by holding large-scaleevents that honour women'sadvancement, whilediligently reminding ofthe continuedvigilance andaction required toensure that women'sequality is gained andmaintained in all aspects of life.

With more women in theboardroom, greater equality inlegislative rights, and an increasedcritical mass of women's visibility asimpressive role models, one couldthink that women have gained trueequality. The unfortunate fact is thatwomen are still not paid equally to thatof their male counterparts, women stillare not present in equal numbers inbusiness or politics, and globallywomen's education, health and theviolence against them is worse than that ofmen.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have femaleastronauts and prime ministers, girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. Therefore, the tone and nature of IWD has moved from being areminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, a global web of richand diverse local activity connects womenfrom all around the world, to inspire andcelebrate women’s achievements.Ranging from political rallies, business

conferences, government activities andnetworking events through to local

women's craft markets,theatric performances,fashion shows and more.

Business Mum 2012:

Anna KennedyEvery so often, My Familymagazine comes across atruly remarkable person. Aspecial person, driven by agood cause, whose selflessactions make the world abetter place. Mother-of-two,businesswoman and autismcampaigner Anna Kennedy isthat special someone!

A regular to the pages of My Family, themother of two autistic sons, she knows firsthand the struggle that half a million adults andchildren in the UK with autism, and theirfamilies, face.

With mainstream school completely unsuitablefor the needs of her two sons and twenty-sixspecial schools turning down applications forPatrick and Angelo, Anna didn’t know where toturn. Faced with the difficulty of findinganywhere that would provide educationalsupport for her boys and the lack of suitablelocal childcare, she took drastic measures.

Having discovered a derelict school inHillingdon, Anna approached the local counciland asked if she could turn it into a centre ofexcellence for children on the autistic spectrum.Hillingdon Borough Council eventually agreedshe could lease the school, but at an askingprice of £627,000!

Refusing to accept defeat, Anna remortgagedher home and set about rallying the support oflocal councillors, companies, charities and themedia to get the venture off the ground. Aftermuch hard work, endless campaigning, tearsand frustrations, Hillingdon Manor Schoolopened its doors on 4th September 1999.

Today, her business Autism ConsultantsLimited provides services to adults with autismand Asperger syndrome, helping them tomaximising their ability and minimising theirdisability. The company runs the independentliving skills provision, West LondonCommunity College and the Old VicarageResidence, an eight-bedroom home inUxbridge.

But, it doesn’t end there; last year the amazingmumpreneur went on to open a furtherspecialist school for children 5 to16 years withautism, Baston House School in Kent. And,in November 2011, Anna launched ‘Step Inthe Right Direction’, a unique dance andexercise DVD for children and young peoplewith autism, which she produced associationwith the world-famous Pineapple PerformingArts School in London.

Anna has received recognition for herachievements far and wide including, runner upfor The Daily Express ‘Women of Substance’,winner of Smooth Radio’s ‘Live Life’ award,2010 winner of ION London and The SouthEast ‘Director of the Year – Chairman’s Award’and My Family Magazine’s 2010 ‘Star’ awardfor raising awareness of Autism.

What’s Special AboutLynne James?Lynne James started working for herself in 1996.Today, she has the 8th most successful businesswithin Forever Living Products in the UK, earninga six-figure income, whilst working part-time andflexibly around her two sons. ‘There is nothingspecial about me’, she says. In fact, over the last14 years she has helped many other people torealise their own success – but where did Lynne’sjourney begin?

I was fed up, demotivated and disillusioned with my role as anexecutive PA, when I was introduced to Forever. Straight away, Iwas attracted to the huge flexibility and potential offered by thecompany and started to work with Forever alongside my full-timejob. To my surprise, within a year I had given up my job and becomepregnant with twins! I realised that the business would enable me tobe true to an important value of mine, which was to stay at homewith our children, whilst at the same time develop a very successfulcareer and income.

Was it a bed of roses? Was it easy? Absolutely not, and I didn’texpect it to be – I knew that this was a business, not a little thing Iwas doing for pin money. I knew I would have challenges, up daysand down days, and I knew I had to keep focused and true to myvision of success.

I now have a lifestyle that I love and I never have to go back to that9-5 job ever again if I don’t want to, and believe me, I don’t wantto! The income I now earn allows me many perks that I wouldn’totherwise have been able to afford, such as a private education formy children, and it also allows me to give away more. Sadly mymother died of breast cancer in May 2004, but I am now in aposition where I can contribute regularly to Cancer Research, as wellas a number of other charities.

Jo Gamble, Nutritional Therapist and College ofNaturopathic Medicine (CNM) graduate, tells us herinspirational story of how she built a businessfollowing her daughter’s serious illness.

New Career as aCNM trained Nutritionistworth a Gamble

“At 19 months old my daughter Georgia was diagnosed withrheumatoid arthritis. By her third birthday she was having chemotherapyto try and combat this auto-immune disease.

“I tried a variety of therapies and took my daughter to nutritionaltherapists and we regularly saw a Naturopath in London but after a whilethought, ‘I could train and do this myself’. I knew a distance learningcourse wasn’t for me and I needed to study locally as Georgia was still inhospital. The College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) enabled me tostudy at weekends in Birmingham. The CNM course is recognised as oneof the most respected within the industry and worked perfectly for mysituation. Training gave me an in-depth knowledge of naturopathicnutrition and its effect on the body so it really helped me to treat mydaughter. Georgia is now 9 years old and is fit and healthy – this is amiracle after doctors told us she would be in a wheelchair for life.

“I’ve taken my passion and knowledge and turned it into my career.Previously I’d worked as a behavioural therapist for 12 years but aftergraduating I wanted to help other people who’d been through the samesituation. When my daughter was sick I desperately wished thatsomeone could have guided me through it and showed the differenttreatments and options out there. Now I do this for families with a childgoing through cancer, offering advice on food, supplements, homeopathy and herbs to work alongside medical treatment. It’s such apersonal journey that has led me to this point where I have a career I loveand is also very flexible for when I still need to take Georgia to hospital.Being a working mum is never easy and I’m constantly pushing myselffurther but this is the most rewarding job in the world and, most of all, Ihave a healthy daughter.”

Jo set up Nutrition Mission in 2009 with fellow CNM graduate Debi-AnnWrigglesworth with the aim of helping people with their health andvitality using primarily food but also lifestyle changes and supplements(www.nutritionmission.co.uk). Jo set up two charities KICT (Kids

Invented by mother EmmaBenson, Holo® has arrived inthe world of pregnancycomfort.

Originally the idea came to Emmajust over 5 years ago, at 28 weekspregnant, while on holiday inSpain.

“I was aware that lying on myback with my tummy in the sunwas not advisable, as apparentlyan unborn baby doesn’t like thebrightness in its eyes and will turnaway in the womb. Lying on myfront was just not an option unlessI dug a big hole in the sand! Itseemed obvious that all I neededwas a lilo with a hole in it for mytummy to go in,” explainedEmma.

Emma got to work on the projectand Holo® was created!

Holo® is suitable at any stage ofpregnancy from the moment itbecomes impossible to lie on yourtummy, right up until the birth. Not just for holidays, it’s ideal forpregnant or sensitive tummies touse on land or water, to lie on yourfront for relaxation, massage andsunbathing. Holo® is used byPhysiotherapists and is proving tobe popular with pregnancy yogateachers too.

International interest is growingand Holo® is proving to be aninstant hit with happy mums-to-be worldwide.

“The holo was good forgetting back massages frommy partner in the last fewweeks. I have now passed iton to a pregnant friend wholoves to sleep on her frontand she is very grateful for it.Thank you and hope all iswell with you.”Kirsty McCabeWeather Presenter, ITV Daybreak

it wasn’t going to be easy. She setabout trying to find fashionablebut comfortable clothes that shewould feel good in; this was aturning point in her recovery!

Claire explains, ‘I did manage tofind some excellent clothes andsome fabulous websites but themajority of them came fromoverseas. The final straw camewhen I ordered two breastfeedingtops and they got stuck in UKcustoms for 6 weeks!! – at whichpoint, I joked with my husband

that 'I could do this and makebreastfeeding clothes readilyavailable to mums like me'; andhere I am!’

Three years and three childrenlater, Violet was still making hersoaps and lotions, testing them onAlex, Abi and Seb plus friends andfamily, who all went on to placeorders for their friends andfamilies. That’s when she decidedto think big and share her fabulousnatural products with the world.

Looking to the future, Violethopes to expand her ethicalskincare range, introducing awider range of baby products tocontinue that special journeytravelled by mother and child.

Shea Mooti: Violet ReidShea Mooti was founded byformer nurse and mum-of-three, Violet Reid.

When her first child, Alex, developed dry skin and eczema, she found the prescribed steroidcreams and harsh shampoos onlyprovided temporary relief whileother ‘organic and natural’products made the conditionworse.

Violet realised the only way to becertain the creams she used on herbaby were natural and pure was tomake them herself. So that’s

When her daughter startedschool, mum-of-two AnnaSalisbury became increasinglyfrustrated with the wholelunchbox thing.

Fed up with leaking bottles thatmade the drink smell and taste ofplastic, containers that were neverthe right size or type, and thewaste that got thrown away everyday, she searched the internet forwaste free lunches, bpa freebottles and leak proof foodcontainers.

Although the concept of a wastefree lunch was very popular in theUS, Canada and Australia, therewas not a website in the UKdedicated to these products. Surethat there must be a better way ofproviding a healthier, waste freelunch for her daughter, she seizedthe opportunity and launched herown online store.

Today, My Friendly Lunchbox sellsa wide range of eco chic anddurable food containers, lunchbags, bottles and ready to use, waste free lunch kits to likemindedBrits.

Having sourced home and garden products which I loved and ofwhich many are willow basketware or wooden, the name Woodand Willow seemed an obvious choice!

I worked with a wonderful web designer who could see my visionand the website was born, I joined the Twitter community inNovember last year and have found it to be probably the best

I now have dedicated UK Handmadepages on the website for small UK

When we think of businessnetworking, we usuallyimagine a meeting ofstrangers in suits. This canseem intimidating if you’venever tried networking as away of promoting yourbusiness before, but itneedn’t be that way.

Businessnetworkingbasics

Networking is getting to know people sothat they are happy to refer their contacts toyou. When you need a plumber, hairdresseror a solicitor, you’re far more likely to askaround your friends if they know ofsomeone good than you are to phone thefirst number that comes up on a Googlesearch. To increase the chances of thathappening for your business, youneed to grow your network sothat you’re known and trustedbefore your potential clientsneed you.

Most women are natural networkers. We’regood at making connections, passing oninformation and helping one another. Andthe great news is that you don’t even haveto go to formal networking meetings unlessyou want to!

Up until a few years ago, businessnetworking was usually done at networkingmeetings. While these are still popular – andcan be very effective – online networkinghas grown enormously recently. This is greatnews for parents with young children, asyou can network from home at any time ofday or night. That said, there’s nothing likemeeting people face-to-face if you can.

Networking groups vary from the morestructured ones (where everyone stands upin turn to do a one-minute speech) toinformal, relaxed events. There are women-only networking groups, mums-in-businessnetworking groups, breakfast meetings, evening meetings and more, so if you don’tfeel at home in a group, there are plentymore to try. Or you could start your own.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t expect tocome out of a networking meeting havingmade a sale. Don’t be too pushy. Be relaxed, low key and find out about the other personyou’re speaking to rather than giving them a

sales pitch.

Combining online and face-to-facenetworking is a very effective strategyfor bringing new business your way.

You can break the ice before you even meetby saying ‘hello’ using social networkingsites like Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, thenstay in touch between meetings in the sameway

Don’t forget that you can also network onthe bus, at the school gates and in thequeue at the post office. It’s often just amatter of being friendly, helpful andinterested in the people around you. Younever know who they may know and mayable to connect you with. Or who theirhusband, mum or best friend may be able toconnect you with!

However you choose to network, rememberthat following up afterwards is essential. Ifpeople only meet you once, they are notgoing to get to know you. They may noteven remember you. Aim to build strong, long term relationships and people will refertheir friends and colleagues to you formonths and years to come.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

How can I fit any form ofexercise into my day that is sobusy already!! And moreimportantly why? Well if youcan just exercise for 15 minuteseach day, then you will improveyour life expectancy by 3 years.

Put your trainers on as soon as youget up or as soon as you come in.

If you have stairs or a few steps, you can do “step-ups”. Start with3 repetitions of 10 steps. As youbecome fitter and it getseasier then change therepetitions to 5 x 10 andthen work up to 10 x 10.

Skipping is another greatway to exercise. Thiscan be done inside or

outside. Put on your favourite music and see ifyou can skip for the whole of the song. Noteasy is it! Each song is around 3- 4 minutes, soafter a few songs you have done your 12- 15minutes of daily exercise.

Instead of sitting down in your usualchair or sofa, switch to sitting on aSwiss ball. An alternative to a chair,

the Swiss ball is aform of exercise

that you canincorporate

hour while watching the television. Try andbalance on the ball by lifting one leg up andthen the other.

Get up while the adverts are on and do somestar jumps, some press ups or even some armdips to help get rid or prevent the dreaded“bingo wings”. And if you do this over acourse of a one hour programme, 3 x 4minutes of adverts, you have fitted into yourday 12 minutes of exercise.

The number of Diabetes sufferersin Britain has risen by 50% in justfive years. This is caused bysoaring levels of obesity and bybeing overweight. Three millionAdults and children now have thecondition with 117,000 casesbeing diagnosed this year alone. The cost to the NHS is 9 billionpounds every year!

The figures show that this condition is veryserious and that it is hugely on the increase. Theeveryday person on the street is probablyunaware of the seriousness of this disease and itis thought that a further 1 million people havetype 2 Diabetes and have not yet beendiagnosed.

There are two types of Diabetes –Type 1 and Type 2

In TYPE 1 the body does not produce anyinsulin – the key hormone which delivers sugarto cells. If you have excess fat it upsets theworking of the insulin which means that thebody cannot break down sugar or glucose anduse it for energy. The excess glucose builds up inthe blood and is passed out in the urine. Thistype is usually genetic and is treatable with theself-administration of insulin daily.

TYPE 2: This occurs when the body does notproduce enough Insulin to break down sugarand glucose to be used for energy. In childrenthis means that the body does not get crucialenergy for growth and development. This type isthe most common and can easily be avoidedwith a healthy balanced diet, exercise andmaintaining a steady weight.

Some 90% of sufferers have Type 2 Diabetesand rising numbers of children are beingdiagnosed each year whereas previously morecases were seen in adults. The reason for thissharp increase is the love of junk food, rise inobesity, being overweight and lack of exercise.

If you show symptoms include frequent visits tothe toilet, increased thirst, extreme tiredness, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision andimpotence, you should seek medical advice fromyour GP.

The Time For Action Is Now!Diabetes Type 1 is genetic but Type 2 which isthe most common can be easily avoided bymaking simple daily changes to your diet andlifestyle. Eat a varied diet of proteins, carbohydrates, fresh fruit and vegetables andcut down on carbonated drinks, sweets andcakes. Exercise on a daily basis by using the

stairs rather than the lift, walk or cycle toschool and work – just try to include somekind of activity into our daily life.

Dopamine is one of the mostimportant neurotransmitters inthe central nervous system. Weneed it for the control andcoordination of movement and tostay alert, active and motivated. Itis vital for “executive” functionssuch as constructive thinking, concentration and memoryformation and is necessary togenerate pleasurable feelings andsexual desire.

Dopamine also has a positive effect on theheart, circulation and metabolic rate. Low levelsof dopamine are usually associated withParkinson's disease, but now, new research islinking low dopamine in other parts of the brainto a variety of health problems incuding:

anxiety attention deficit disorders cravings and addictions chronic fatigue low mood and depression poor memory restless legs

Dopamine and developmentOur individual dopamine levels and functioningreflect our genetic tendency and ourdevelopment in the womb and during childhoodwhen the nervous system is developing rapidly, but they are also known to be reduced by stress, lack of the right nutrients, ageing and certainmedications. From mid-life for example, dopamine levels start declining at a rate ofapproximately 13% each decade, whichaccounts for many of the general symptoms ofageing such as fatigue, poor sleep quality, reduced emotional activity, depression, reducedmotor activity, loss of muscle tone and cognitivefunction. In women, low dopamine levelsexacerbate the physiological and psychologicaleffects of the menopause, producing moresevere hot flushes, night sweats, sleepdisturbances and mood swings. For men, theeffects of falling testosterone such as;decreasing muscle mass, increasing body fat, reduced physical energy/endurance, graduallydecreasing libido, loss of bone density, increasing cholesterol etc are all exacerbated bydeclining dopamine.

How to improve dopaminelevels and functioning

Dopamine is made in the body from the aminoacid tyrosine which is derived from the proteinswe eat or from the amino acid phenylalanine.Unfortunately, eating more tyrosine-rich foodsdoes not automatically confer higher dopaminelevels. The only proven way to improvedopamine levels/function is by increasing thelevel of phenylethylamine (PEA) in the brain.PEA is a neuroamine we produce when we feelhappy, calm and in love (hence it has beencoined the “love molecule”) and as well as itspositive effects on the dopamine system, itimproves mood, mental acuity andconcentration. PEA taken by mouth is normallyrapidly metabolized but fortunately we can getextra PEA into the nervous system bysupplementing our diet with aspecial, blue-green algae calledKlamath AFA .

Klamath blue-green algae is themost nutrient-dense food on theplanet and the only food

containing significant amounts of PEA togetherwith specific antioxidants that allow its entryinto the nervous system. This property makesKlamath a very valuable commodity since it canbe used to improve all conditions associatedwith low dopamine and avoid the need for drugtherapies. At Simply Vital we agree withHippocrates, the father of medicine who said“Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicinebe thy food”!

By teaching your children healthy eating habitswhen they are young, you will help themmaintain a healthy weight, and they will learngood eating habits for life. It isn’t always easyto get it right, so here are some approaches youcan take to develop healthy eating habits foryour kids:

1 Guide family food choices never dictate food. Make sure there isa choice of healthy foods in the household.

2 Involve children in buying and preparing food as it’s a greatopportunity to teach them about nutrition.

3 Discourage eating whilst watching television, as this may lead toovereating.

4 Encourage water as a beverage, as over consumption ofsweetened and carbonated drinks is linked with obesity.

5 Snacking can lead to overeating, so only have them at specifictimes of the day and make them as nutritious as possible.

6 One final point to make – as a child my Nan used to send a foodparcel for my brother and I every fortnight, it contained

homemade cakes, crisps and chocolate, thiswas such a treat for us. Never

deprive your children of treatstotally, but keep themlimited and don’t give on adaily basis. Sweets, cakes, chocolate and crispsshould not be part ofthe daily diet butunfortunately todaythis is what they havebecome.

Tips for Snacks

Put snacks in a sectioned container and place it in the bottom of thefridge so that your children can help themselves throughout the day. Also buy resealable food bags or good quality, leak-free lunchboxesto transport food when out and about.

Snacks:Carrots (cut up) • Celery • Cheese cubes • Raisins • BananasPopcorn • Apples (sliced) • Grapes (seedless) • YogurtsNuts (if not allergic) • Peanut Butter on crackers or wholemeal breadMilk • Cereal (granola) • Red, Green Yellow peppers (sliced) withhummus dip • Olives • Wholemeal bread and oilFlapjack (made with oats) • Sunflower seeds • Dried Fruit

What Can Be Done?

Much can be achieved to make life less challenging with appropriateeducation and support. It is crucial that there are services in place tomeet the needs of the half a million people with autism in the UKtoday.

The National Autistic Society is the UK's leading charity forpeople with autism and their families. Founded in 1962, it continuesto spearhead national and international initiatives and provide astrong voice for all people with autism, offering a wide range ofservices to help people with autism and Asperger syndrome livetheir lives with as much independence as possible.

For more information about autism and for help in your area, callthe Autism Helpline: 0808 800 4104 10am-4pm, Monday toFriday (local rates apply).

The National Autistic Society’s Autism Services Directory is the UK'smost comprehensive directory of services and events for peoplewith autism, visit www.autism.org.uk/autismdirectory to findautism services and support networks in your area.

There are over 500,000 people with autism inthe UK – that's 1 in 100. Together with theirfamilies that's over two million people whoselives are touched by autism every single day.

What is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how aperson communicates with, and relates to, other people. It alsoaffects how they make sense of the world around them.

It is a spectrum condition, which means that while all people withautism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them indifferent ways. Some people with autism are able to live relativelyindependent lives but others may have accompanying learningdisabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People withautism may also experience over or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.

Asperger syndrome is a form of autism. People with Aspergersyndrome are often of average or above average intelligence. Theyhave fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties withunderstanding and processing language.

What Causes Autism?

The causes of autism are still being investigated. Many expertsbelieve that the pattern of behaviour from which autism isdiagnosed may not result from a single cause. There isstrong evidence to suggest that autism can be caused by avariety of physical factors, all of which affect braindevelopment – it is not due to emotional deprivation or theway a person has been brought up.

There is evidence to suggest that genetic factors areresponsible for some forms of autism. Scientists have beenattempting to identify which genes might be implicated inautism for some years.

Autism is likely to have multiple genes responsible rather than asingle gene. The difficulty of establishing geneinvolvement is compounded by theinteraction of genes and by their interactionwith environmental factors. For thesereasons genetic testing to diagnose a pre-disposition to an autistic spectrum disorder isnot, at present, possible.
