Vespa 50 Special

Vespa "small frame" was born at the beginning of the 60s

(1963), but its popularity increased at the end of the

decade, when in 1969 "50 Special" and in 1968

"Primavera 125" were simultaneously launched.

The "50 Special“, thanks to the its typical lightness and

unique style, became a symbol of freedom for a whole

generation of young people in search of independence

and self-determination.

The Primavera 125 launched in 1968. It had a huge

success along with its sporty version, the ET3,

similar to the success of the 50cc scooters.

Thanks to more compact dimensions, compared to

other 125cc models sold at that time, and the high

maneuverability, it was the perfect vehicle for

urban commuting.

Vespa PK 50

The 80’s were a transition period for Vespa "small

frame“.

The squared shapes of the PK model failed to grab

the attention and appreciation of young people.

However, Vespa anticipated the future by

presenting the PK automatic, the first attempt of a

classic and modern union.

The 90s were a crucial decade for Vespa.

Other automatic scooters presented very aggressive

competition, and threatened the decline of Vespa.

Vespa’s response was outstanding: it launched the ET4

(150cc) and ET2 (50cc), the first fully automatic Vespas.

They were an instant success , spreading beyond Europe

and around the world.

Vespa LX

The 2000s were the time of Vespa’s dedication to the

“small frame”.

The LX 50 and 150 become a global icon of style and

distinction. It was the vehicle of choice for

trendsetters, celebrities, and young people.

From Rome to New York, from Hanoi to New Delhi,

young people were moving about on Vespas.

Vespa "small frame" was born in 1963 equipped with 50cc engine, as Piaggio’s answer to the new

Italian Highway code that authorized the riding of a 50cc scooter without a license.

Since that time, Vespa’s “small frame” has evolved over the years, moving from a local dimension

Vespa Primavera inherits the exclusive and refined elegance of the Vespa 946 while keeping the original

shape intact. Primavera keeps the unique characteristics of Vespa design, and maintains the

functionality and the comfort of a scooter made for daily urban mobility.


Vespa gives particular care to the smallest detail, such as chrome-plated parts, passenger footrest

etc., which makes the Primavera unique in the scooter market.

Designing the new frame, Piaggio studied new

solutions to create more legroom, without increasing

the distance between saddle and handlebars.

Furthermore, the footrest is now thinner on the

central part so that the rider can easily rest their feet

on the ground when stopping.

The saddle design was studied in order to offer the

maximum comfort when seated, maximum agility for

passenger, and also to facilitate an easy mount and

dismount from the vehicle.

Vespa Primavera introduces an important new feature: the all

new Enhanced Sliding Suspension ESS, which will increase the

level of safety and comfort for both rider and passenger.

The new suspension has been totally redesigned by Piaggio R&D

in order to reduce frictions during riding and increasing driving

comfort and handling.

The shock absorber, that used to be fixed by two bolts, is now

fixed by an hinging pin.

These new features have a better impact on the design of Vespa

Primavera.

The instrument panel of the Vespa

Primavera sets a new standard in terms of

on board technology.

The new dashboard is composed of an

analogic speedometer and a LCD display

which shows odometer, trip, fuel level and

clock. There are also two light controls on

the handlebars.

Primavera, represents the perfect

combination of tradition and innovation.

The on board technological level of the Vespa

Primavera is also present in the lighting system,

thanks to the LED technology.

Front Day Running Lights (DRL) are made by LED

lights, a modern and elegant solution.

As in the exclusive and elegant Vespa 946, the

Primavera’s DRL lights are perfectly integrated into

the front shield which remains clean and stylish.

Vespa Primavera is equipped with a complete engine

range:

- 50cc 4strokes 4valves

- 150cc 3valves electronic injection (i.e.)

These engines are the top in terms of technology,

performance and fuel consumption.

The 150cc 3valves engine, performs up to 117 mpg (up

to 50 km/l). One of the lowest fuel consumption of the

category.

The 150 3valves engine is the state of the art in terms

of efficiency, with ordinary maintenance scheduled

every 6,000 miles /10,000 km.

Piaggio design center, thanks to 946 experience, has played an important and innovative work on

surfaces and body sections realizing deep scratches that, without betraying the softness of lines typical

of every Vespa, are able to confer a whole new dynamic and modern shape.

original shape. Despite Primavera keeps the unique characteristics of the most Vespa precious of all

time, it doesn’t give up on the functionality and the comfort of a scooter made for daily urban mobility.

The front shield of the Vespa Primavera keeps with the Vespa tradition , the column steering cover.

This element has an irregular shape like a necktie, thin on the top and larger on the bottom.

The Vespa 946 proposed resurrected the traditional shape, even if in a more exclusive and futuristic

way. The Vespa Primavera imitates the elegance of Vespa 946 with the very clean front shield and

the column steering cover enriched by chrome plated elements.

The design theme of the Vespa Primavera is shown in the way Piaggio designers took inspiration from

the traditional Vespa shape and redesigned it in a modern and futuristic way.

One of the most impressive example is the lateral side of Vespa, also known as the cowls.

The final result is a dynamic shape, which is very clean and elegant.

The rims design keeps the 5 spoke shape, as for

Vespa LX and GTS, but is reimagined in a new

and dynamic version perfectly inspired to

Primavera design.

The 11’’ front and rear wheels of the Vespa

Primavera represent a good match between

safety and maneuverability, two main

characteristic for an urban scooter.

The instrument panel of Vespa Primavera is characterized by the LCD display placed in the bottom

part. The display shows all the important information such as odometer, trip, fuel level and clock.

The frame is made of steel, completely redesigned, but retaining the classic construction:

made of pressed steel spot and arc welded .

A careful design of the various components has allowed a significant increase of the stiffness without

increasing the weight, despite the larger size. Body performance and construction quality are possible

also thanks to the new “fully automated welding line”.

The new frame design increased the level of comfort due to the new battery position in the central

body rail. This solution gives a lower center of gravity to the vehicle which means improved stability.

An additional benefit is the increased under seat compartment which is now 16.6 liters of capacity,

enough space for a full helmet and other objects, and features a liner. The saddle can be now easily

opened pushing the button placed over the glove box (Primavera 50cc uses a key to open saddle).

*Only available for 125-150. Keyhole is placed on the saddle for 50cc models

• Long-stroke engine (58 mm) with reduced bore to improve torque and fuel efficiency at low

speed.

• New cylinder head to increase the combustion efficiency, both for the 3valve lay-out and for

the optimization of internal charge motion (tumble in particular).

Integrated spark-advance, air/fuel ratio and phase

management, with lambda probe and 3-way catalyst.

Designed to allow engine start without battery (for kick

starter versions).

The 3valves engine implemented new features in order to increase efficiency, comfort and drivability

and to reduce fuel consumption, vibrations and noise level.
