MY WISH LIST
FOR DIVINE MERCY
PARISHIONERS
WHEN I RETIRE
Before I ask you, my beloved Family members, to consider
my final pastoral wishes as I retire, I want to thank you
immensely for giving me your support and assistance with the
different ministries; inviting me into your homes for dinner,
and out for a round of golf. I cannot overstate the
importance that sharing these many holy moments with you,
in service to our Lord and out among His family, has meant to
me.
I owe a great deal of thanks to mothers for being a mother
to me and giving me your motherly care for these many years.
I am grateful to fathers who have stood with me as earthly
fathers, walking this walk with me, instilling confidence in me
and my ministry. Your support was necessary to the success
of my mission as your Spiritual Father, and I could have failed
without you. Thank you all for journeying with me over these
past 10 years.
Divine Mercy is the last parish I will serve in active ministry.
It feels somewhat like Divine Mercy Parish is the only parish
that I served in. The time that I have spent here is the longest
that I have served in one community since my ordination in
1987. As I prepare to leave I find my growth as a priest is due
to the great and various contributions you’ve made to my
experiences during the time that we have shared together. It
is with a very grateful and joyful heart that I prepare for
continued service to our God, yet in a different capacity.
As I celebrated our first Mass together in January 2010, in
full faith, I shared with you the “mission” that God had
charged me with as your new pastor; “God called me to Divine
Mercy to help you get to heaven.” Looking back on this last
decade I recognize the pain that we shared as growth and
journey is not without some kinds of hurt; I look back on tears
of joy and our celebrations of the milestones we achieved
together. We are the vine of Christ and are always striving for
growth; but most of all as I look to our present and your
future as the Divine Mercy Parish family, I desire for each of
you the presence of mind to create many, many more holy
moments. Persevere in making holy moments — this will help
you get to heaven.
On the top of my wish list is that each of us lives life in a State
of Grace and works to keep our path straight on the highway to
Heaven. I wish that we all meet again at the top of the Stairway
and we will be with God forever in Heaven.
My next wish is that through his own way of leadership, the
new pastor will continue to lead you all on the journey to Heaven.
I pray that you will desire to assist him in the journey as you
assisted me during my time with you in active ministry.
I wish that you will remain devoted to our Lord Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Trinity, and His Mother Mary. I wish that you will
continue to desire closeness with God by attending the Welcome
Retreats, and share your experiences with others which will allow
Jesus to continue to renew His parish.
I wish that you will always work at helping your brothers and
sisters who have lost their way. I wish that you will always lead by
example and walk the lost back to the highway to Heaven.
I wish that through the power of prayer our families will
continue reforming the Domestic Church; continue praying
together as a family and make the Word of God alive in the life of
your families.
I have more wishes. I know you all to be loving people and do
not want to put too many out there because I know you will want
to fulfill them all…..so I leave you with my last wish-live your love
of Divine Mercy; continue
your devotion to the
Sacred Heart; and continue
to pray for lasting peace in
our families and the world.
May the peace of our
Lord be with you always,
Father Soane

“Fear no one! There is nothing concealed; that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What
I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.”
Matthew 10:25-27
We should not fear an outbreak of pandemic at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, such as has happened in Dixon.
However the incident gives us an opportunity to recap the various steps that Father, Business and Facilities as well
as the Security and Ushers Ministry have taken to protect you from contracting the virus when you attend Mass. Do
not fear coming to Mass! There isn’t anything about safety, sanitizing and ensuring social distancing that hasn’t
been shared with you on our website (www.divinemercynatomas.com) , in the e-bulletin and posted in the church.
After receiving the news that the church would reopen; Father Soane enlisted the very best of resources to make
sure everyone could return to worship and feel comfortable and safe.
He secured volunteers with experience in Safety and Security processes, as well as project management and
technical writing skills to document and implement a process that would meet the State, County and Diocese
criteria.
Father combined the Security and Usher ministries to ensure and check that everyone coming into the church
is compliant with the criteria. Masks are a requirement.
The church has been modified to support sanitation and social distancing. Hand sanitizing stations have been
installed throughout the church. Social distancing has been indicated by closing every other pews, and mark-
ing the actual seating areas. Walk ways, seating, and directional entry/exits are marked by following the blue
tape.
The SUM ministry escorts the parishioners into the church
and seat them in the socially distanced areas.
One- way walk- through have been established to prevent
crowding in the aisles of the church and directions for en-
trance and exit are marked above the door to avoid cross
traffic in the Narthex area.
Declarations are filled out by each parishioner as they enter the church for Mass, declaring that they are free
of Covid 19 symptoms. These are part of a tracking system that we are using to “track” an outbreak should
one occur and prevent a full shut-down of the church. Exposed parishioners can be informed and they may
self-quarantine.
The church is fully sanitized by professionals (our very own Apex Cleaning parishioners) after every Mass.
The door handles, etc. are wiped down. You can follow the cleaning process by accessing Apex Cleaning on
Instagram.
Father does not serve communion.
He does wear a mask upon entry of the church.
He remains socially distant from the parishioners by more than 12 feet by remaining behind the Altar and Am-
bo.
The deacons and EM’s wear face shields while serving communion.
The offering baskets are placed at the front of the church. The parishioners are taking their gifts up to the
Altar during the offering.
I’m certain that there are other items that can be shared. As there are developments, we’ll get the word out! It’s ok
to go to Mass! The Lord and your parish family will see you there!
Nothing is
concealed !

“What I say to you in the darkness,
speak in the light; what you hear
whispered, proclaim on the house-
tops.”
During the first three centuries of
the Church, being a Christian was
no easy thing. Christianity was
illegal. The first thirty-three popes
were all martyred. For over three
hundred years, to lead the Church from the Chair of St. Peter meant to be
killed. It’s no wonder that there arose in the Church such a reverence for
the office of the Pope. In their earthly leader, Christians could plainly see
the image of Jesus Christ, whose death opened the gates of Heaven.
Of course, it was not only the popes who became martyrs. Thousands of
Christians from every walk of life—carpenters, farmers, mothers and fa-
thers, tradesmen and fishermen, to name just a few—were martyred gen-
eration after generation until Christianity was made legal in the fourth
century.
Once the Emperor Constantine joined the Church, Christianity became
not just legal, but the religion of the Roman Emperor. Christian martyrs
seemed a thing of the past. For hundreds of years thereafter, the Faith
was wedded to the rule of empires, nations, and kingdoms throughout the
world.
Unfortunately, this led to a different problem. Martyrdom often took an-
other form. Instead of people being sacrificed, the Truth was at times
sacrificed for the sake of worldly peace. The Faith was sacrificed at the
altar of the secular.
Even in our own day, God asks us Christians to consider such a form of
martyrdom. He asks faithful Catholics, the members of His Church, to
stand on guard. We do not know when the truth is going to be at-
tacked. Have you ever been surprised by something you’ve come across
in the media which takes the truth and twists it? Have you ever heard the
topic of the Church brought up in conversation, only to be met with laughs
and sneers?
Throughout the Gospel accounts, you don’t hear Jesus talk much about
the Devil. Even when He was tempted by Satan in the desert, Jesus did
not pursue Satan. Jesus simply fought against the temptations that Satan
placed before Him. When Satan was through trying to tempt Jesus and
fled the desert, Jesus did not give chase. The devil fled to fight another
day, and century, and millennium.
In Sunday’s Gospel Reading, Jesus says that what we receive within the
walls of our parish churches we need to be willing to speak in public. We
don’t have to go searching for arguments. When we hear someone put-
ting down the Church’s beliefs, we ourselves are being putting down. The
Church is the Body of Christ, and we are all members of that Sacred
Body. When the Body of Christ is attacked, her teachings ridiculed, or
her rights suppressed, we must be willing to speak out and at times even
act against what is false and unjust.
But how do we go about doing that? Sometimes, just speaking out and
saying that a remark is offensive makes someone understand his wrong-
doing. Yet sometimes we may be challenged by another to defend what
the Church teaches, and that demands that we understand the
Faith. This raises another important point about Jesus’ words in Sun-
day’s Gospel Reading.

reflections/2020-06-21/
There hasn’t been a saint in the history of the Church who has completely
understood everything that there is to know about the Faith. Nonetheless,
we must be willing to explain as much as we do we know. Furthermore,
we must be willing to learn more than what we currently know, whether we
do this by reading, watching television shows that accurately teach about
the Faith, or simply by holding a conversation with knowledgeable Catho-
lics.
Of course, the greatest resource we have at our disposal is God the Holy
Spirit. Through Baptism we have received the Holy Spirit, and those of us
who have been confirmed have been strengthened by the Spirit’s seven
gifts. Four of these seven gifts strengthen the human intellect to help us
know the Faith: wisdom, understanding, counsel, and knowledge. The
other three gifts of the Holy Spirit strengthen the human will to help us
spread the Faith: fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. All of these help us
to speak Jesus’ words in the light and to proclaim them on the housetops.+
Stewardship Bulletin Reflection — June 21, 2020
Today’s readings call us to tackle the challenging issues of fear and trust —
two concepts that must be confronted and dealt with by all of us who wish to
live the stewardship way of life. The Lord knows that facing down our fears
and choosing to trust Him with all areas of our lives is an ongoing challenge for
us. He is generous with reassurances to us throughout the Scriptures.
Today’s Gospel passage from Matthew is a case in point. In the span of eight
verses, Jesus addresses the topic of fear four times:
“Fear no one.”
“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.”
“Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body.”
“So do not be afraid.”
And the reassurance continues. “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin?
Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even
all the hairs of your head are counted.” Notice that Jesus says, “your Father” in
describing God’s intimate knowledge and tender care for each one of us. He is
truly “Abba,” our Dad, Who knows us inside and out. With that, let us all
breathe a huge sigh of relief. All is well. Our Father knows us through and
through, sent His Son to save us, and will always take care of us. Let’s stop
wasting any more time with fear. Instead, let’s put all our energy, all our time,
our talents and our treasure into trusting this great and loving God, using all
that we are and all that He has given us to bring Him glory.

Prayers of the Faithful
Note new email address!
On this Sunday in which honor the gift of Fatherhood we present our
petitions to our heavenly Father.
For our Holy Father, Pope Francis, that he will make decisions for the
good of the Church.
For the priests serving in this Diocese, that they be the spiritual Fathers
that their vocation calls them to be.
For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in this Diocese,
that they will not be afraid to answer the call.
For all Father’s on this Father’s Day that they will come to know the love
that our Heavenly Father has for them and reflect that love to their fami-
lies.
For all Father’s whose children are in danger of being aborted, that they
will be given the grace to answer the call to Fatherhood as our Heavenly
Father desires and do whatever it takes to make that happen.
We rejoice and give thanks to God for the return of the Public Mass and
pray that all of us whether we are able to come to Mass or not be given
the grace to persevere through these difficult times.
For a cure for the coronavirus, healing for the sick, strength for their
families and courage and protection for those who care for them.
That God will have mercy on all those that have died and console those
that mourn their passing.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:26-33
Jesus assures the Twelve that God cares about them. Background on the
Gospel Reading:
We read today’s Gospel in the context of last week’s Gospel in which Je-
sus sent the twelve disciples to proclaim the kingdom of heaven. In be-
tween last week’s reading and today’s reading, Jesus has predicted that
the disciples will face difficulties in their mission. Many people will not re-
ceive them well, even within the land of Israel. Even family members will
turn away from the disciples because of the disciples’ commitment to Je-
sus and the kingdom. Today’s Gospel offers the disciples consolation
against this difficult truth.
This section of Matthew’s Gospel should be read in the context of Mat-
thew’s intended audience, a Jewish-Christian community. The Gospel
alludes to the dangers and persecutions that this community has most
likely already faced and will continue to face. To reassure this community,
Matthew recalls for them the encouraging words of Jesus that we read
today.
In this Gospel passage, Jesus might be understood as putting suffering in
perspective. The disciples of Jesus are called upon to keep their focus on
God. Those who can harm the body do not have ultimate power; God
does. Still persecution and suffering can not be avoided or prevented. But
Jesus reassures his disciples that God knows and cares about what hap-
pens to his children.
We might not face the same type of persecution, but we do experience
difficulties as we endeavor to live a Christian life. Sometimes we let the
opinions of others prevent us from doing what we know to be right. We
need the reminder that what God thinks about us is more important. We
are reassured by the promise that God cares for us and protects us. +
