Tommy goes to the Hospital

Tommy was so sick he had to go into the hospital. They put Tommy into a room without other boys and girls. They took lots of x-rays and even took a little blood from his veins and it went into a bottle. Tommy was a little scared but his tummy hurt so bad that it didn’t matter anymore how scared he was.

Tommy’s Bug

Soon the doctors came into the room and told Tommy’s Mom and Dad Tommy had a very bad bug in his body. Tommy could hardly talk because he became very weak and tired, but he managed to very quietly yell, “I didn’t eat any bugs.”

Yeeks!! E Coli

Then Tommy went to sleep and his parents were very sad because Tommy was so sick the doctors did not think they could make him better. Tommy’s parents did not understand how Tommy could be so sick. They loved Tommy very much and took very good care of him. The doctors told his parents that he had E Coli infection. They said, What! How can that be?

All About E Coli

So as Tommy slept and allowed the nurses to take down his temperature and help him with his tummy pain, Tommy's parents read a small book with information about E Coli and how humans can get E Coli. Tommy’s Mom and Dad stayed up all night waiting for Tommy to get better and found out that Tommy got his E Coli from his McDonald hamburger.

The Coli Fight in Tommy’s Tummy

Tommy’s parents were told he had 0157:H7 type of E Coli. This very bad bug that invaded Tommy’s tummy, was busy trying to destroy Tommy. The doctors said there was a big battle going on in his body with the good bacteria and the bad. There was more bad than good and it didn’t look good. The doctors did not have the right ammunition to give Tommy to fight this bug.

Where does E Coli Come From?

Tommy’s doctor said it could come from the milk, the lettuce or the hamburger Tommy ate. The doctor saw the bug through his microscope.

Tommy is sad

Soon Tommy turned his head and said, Mom and Dad, I think the bug is tired, it stopped kicking me, but I can feel it is still in there. Will I get better?

What to do to Keep Safe The nurse gave Tommy’s parents a paper too with things they have to do at home to help keep all of us safe from the bad bug E Coli.

– Wash our food – Wash hands thoroughly– Cook our meat to 180 degree to kill the E

Coli– Know where our meat and vegetables are

raised– Make sure the cows, the chickens, and the

pigs eat grass and not corn– Never support Monsanto, GMO or factory

farming
