SOPHIA,L.A12/8/13 CHRISTMAS CONCERT,ST.PETERS-by-the-SEA,PV12/7/13 MSU SPARTANS def BUCKEYES,34-24,to WIN BIG 10 CHAMPIONSHIP...will playStanford at the Rose Bowl on New Years Day,2014 ! Go GREEN! I've been rooting 4 thespartans all season (from southern Cal).

Spartans,michigan state,ncaa,big ten championship,osu,ohio state,buckeyes,rose bowl12/6/13 @ HANDEL's MESSIAH SING-ALONG!12/6 Jim-Lin Re MY THOUGHTS & MEMORIES of MANDELA,& my SOUTH AFRICA TRIP: ,...this one historical figure who truly looms in my mind as an important transformationalperson...maybe its something about his facial features shown in the media that seem soplacid & so serene...a face that would not strike fear in your heart,but faith,..and his legacywas transpiring while I was in junior high & high school et seq (I recall Alan Boesak alsocoming to GR..later he took a fall from grace), and it was in "Dutch South Africa" so to speak.In fact, I made a point of traveling to south africa in 1996 partially for the purpose of getting afeel for the country & observing race relations among other things as well as the Afrikaanculture. I had read some books re the Boer War et al prior to the trip (which came just afterleaving CVUSD & when I returned I heard Jim Zoetewey had died...& then I traveled back toGR for a year at calvin seminary)...;the Africa trip was a great experience (including Kenya &Tanzania as well,and some animal safaris). South Africa stands out in my mind because I wastraveling by rental car just sort of winging it thru some remote parts of the country as well asJo'berg (ie Johannesberg) & Cape Town,among other large cities.And I was treated with muchhospitality by some white Afrikaans who immediately recognized me as an American trying toget to know the country. And of course there's the great "Biko" song sung by Peter Gabrielthat strikes a chord . And the list goes on. I have also enjoyed African music very muich & whyI was SO disappointed that your daughter Julie refused to return my Africa CD I allowed herto borrow as I was leaving St. Joseph during my charitable trip back in 2005 when Ivolunteered to try to help them during their difficult time. Nonetheless,Mandela was not aperfect person & even was part of the communist party (ie ANC) for a while (which is why theUSA was concerned about him as well for so long) & yet I've heard him quoted as saying "I amnot a saint unless a saint is a sinner who keeps on trying". That's a beautiful statement.RIP,NELSON MANDELA,1918-2013

Andthat was that...I come to the show every few months. This will hold me over for awhile...definitely will be around for Jay's final show not too far away...unless NBC doesanother "bring him back" act. Heard on NPR this morning that Leno is WAY out in front in

viewership (ahead of letterman). But I don't get the feeling there's going to be a "part 3" forLeno this time around,unless its with another network. I think its just an age thing in NBC'smind..they may just want "young blood" for better or worse.

Did I miss them? (A smaller show plane ofsome sort just flew over after the parade passed...thanks!) Nonetheless, it was small butsignificant,..even if you don't believe in the use of military power...we can still show support& respect for much of what our veterans represent..incl my late uncle Sherwood..who was aLt. 10/30/13 RED SOX WIN WORLD SERIES!! After finishing last in 2012 Boston wins the worldchampionship in 2013! A double by Victorino gave the red sox the early lead in 3rdinning,making it 3-0.Drew homered in 4th to make it 4-0.Couple more hits made it 6-0 still in

the 4th. Lackey pitched well thru the middle of the game, the Cards could only put a snake-eye on the board, & the rest, as they say....is HISTORY! Red Sox world champions 2013!!Congrats to Napoli & Lackey, both former Angels. Napoli deserves it after coming so closewith the Rangers as well (also versus cardinals). Also incredible series for Big Papi Dave Ortiz!

10/28 FEEDING SEAL @ MORRO BAY AQUARIUM...this little mom & popaquarium..surprisingly lively sea creatures of different sorts..the seals are in semi-enclosedtanks & u can pay 50 cents to feed them fish pieces..they will "bark" ...& jump up oj littleperches...but u can't touch them..which the gal said u could when she asked me if I wanted tofeed them..I said "can u pet them too?" Andseemed to say yes..nonetheless. no big deal..itwas fun throwing food to them...inside there's various fish & octopi (that's the plural ofoctopus)...one octopus was very lively, moving around..the aquarium is aging but the fishseem well-cared for...I left the aquarium & re-entered the attached gift shop & wanted tobrowse & maybe buy a few items but they (the young gal & the elderly lady..maybe grand-daughter & grandma?) ) gave a perfunctory "thank-you" as if I was just another customer at agrocery story to come & go....guess they didn't care if I browsed & bought anything else..but Itried to browse briefly..despite the seemingly somewhat unwelcome atmosphere..finally Igave up on any nice smalltalk from either of them & moved for the door...which seemed totrigger the elderly lady ...she said "bye hon"...which I didn't think was meant in a trulyaffectionate manner, but otherwise.Disappointing because they had a "Jesus" sign on theirdoor signifying their alleged allegiance to Jesus Christ, but I didn't feel the warmth.Nonetheless, maybe it was just the moment ...maybe the rain outside made them a bitdepressed..whatever the case may be,..they are in my prayers & I hope they keep good careof the precious sea creatures. Jim-lin,persecution of "Calvinists" is ON the RISE !...the name "Calvin" in mainstream culture is being increasingly maligned,...even at fullerseminary I periodically heard little snide remarks & cheapshots,...even by a few professors..perhaps aimed at me..b/c they knew I came from calvin college,,,the PROBLEM being thatmost people misunderstand calvin & calvinism & the mainstream media et al amplifies this

misunderstanding,...furthermore most people who attend calvin college know very little ifanything about John Calvin or the so-called negative "calvinism" being maligned by theworld.10/22/13 THEY HAVE the NEW CLOVER COFFEE-MAKER HERE@ STARBUCKS,STA CRUZ(3)had read about seems like 2 years ago but until now haven't come across a starbucks thatactually has one..only "select" shops carry them...its an $11,000 machine...imagine that..tomake a cup of coffee (pacific ave)

These sorts of people DON'T CARE if theyoffend people..in fact they ENJOY doing so...whatever it takes to GET WHAT THEYWANT...that's the sort of society we live in now...with those at the VERY BOTTOM , orpretending to be, controlling the milieu...in fact,ironically, this guy looked like a transient butthen bought a large coffee & bagel..so he isn't poor, ...albeit have u ever noticed how the so-called "poor" and "needy" seem to have the most disposable income for beer at the ballparkor specialty coffees @ mcdonalds,etc ) . Its CRAZY! 10/13/13 ME SWIMMING @ SANTA CRUZ (55 degrees)...ONLY 1 w/o WETSUIT...Maybe 58degrees..cold water doesn't seem to bother me...in fact I find it refreshing..I swam out to thisrock which was covered by seaLions (and/Or harbor seals) .they were also swimming &periodically the younger ones were flying out of the water...as if they were just havingfun..maybe chasing eachother playfully...as. got closer to the rock a few swam near me

curiously..then a bit closer suddenly it was like a "wall" of small seals rose up and literallySTARED at me...almost as if they were warning me that I had gotten close enough. I'm notsure what these creatures can do to humans, but they do have teeth, and earlier by the boatsI saw one tearing apart a salmon *(that's what one of the locals said it was doing),...so Iimagine they could do a bit of harm to a human if they wanted..so I backed off and they didlikewise..(((****1 thing that bothers me: PITBULL OWNERS WHO WALK their DOG OFF-LEASH,...I see so manypeople who own pitbulls & each one of them thinks "their pitbull" is not like others..that"their pitbull" is the most loving,friendly dog in the world (albeit they also like it for"ptrotection" just in case). They believe "their pitbull" is so nice it won't harm anybody(unless the person is threatening their owner)...and that's the problem,dogs can mispervceivea person as a threaat based on shape,size etc. Remember our black lab "friendly" who wasthe nicest dog in the world, but when we would go to lake michigan out at the public beach(back in the day when dogs were allowed) the only time she would bark or act a bitaggressive was when a black person walked by ..the reason being that black people at thebeach around the holland area were rare,..and also maybe in combination they weretentative around dogs, ..and dogs can sense tentativeness, but also I believe the reasonfriendly barked at black persons was simply that they represented a "different shape" so tospeak. Maybe it was as simple as the fact that they did not fit the "pattern". And I wasreminded of this as I walked on the sequoia-bayview trail today (10/11/13) in the joaquinmiller redwood area of oakland,california. As I walked I saw a man approaching with a dogoff-leash. It was either a pitbull or a bulldog,..and the dog was walking ahead of the man..andI slowed down a bit..as they approached to make sure I didn't alarm the dog. The dog slowedtoo and then stopped, and I stopped too...I trieed to speak in a friendly manner to thedog..."hi there" o said,..but then the dog sort of growled ..or made a strange noise. Maybe itwas a wjimper..not sure..; the guy just kept smiling..didn't call the dog's name or sayanything..as if he was enjoying watching the drama unfold,...then he said "I think its yourhat". I was wearing a sombrero of sorts.that would fit with the same theory I discuss above,something that doesn't fit "the pattern". But what bothers me is that he didn't appologize ormake any effort to intercede...and of course they are SUPPOSED to have their dog on leash....

and so when I say "pitbulls" or similar classes of dogs I say it because these dogs have areputation for occassionally attacking (more so than other dogs). And I tend to think that theowners of such dogs enjoy watching the consternation of others in such cases.Around almostall other dogs I have no timidity, but pitbulls and the like are DEFINITELY a different breedwith a different temperament, and their owners in most cases specifically choose them forsuch reasons even if almost ALL of them will say "NOT MINE" when speaking of a dangerousbreed, and probably these are the same people who said such up until that time when their

In 1983 I was in 10th grade & so this was a "formative" film for me...at that age movies have

such a long-lasting memorable effect & the actors all seem so much more "larger than life."Tom Cruise was just starting out as an actor. I saw him at the Jerry Bruckheimer hollywoodstar ceremony a few weeks ago, & one thing that struck me was how short he is...muchshorter than I imagined.

IT was fun to see some of the cast & crew before they showed the movie,...unfortunately Ihad to leave early, but still a good experience.
