By the end of the challenge, you will have a customized plan to improve your communication skills. Step #1 of this challenge is to develop your Spanish / English Learning Blueprint. PASO 2: Identify your Current Proficiency Level in the language you are learning. If you have a good idea of where you are starting, it's easier to set goals for where you want to be in the future. Identify your current level of Oral Proficiency using guidelines established by The American Council on The Teaching of Foreign Languages.

COMPLETE THE SMART GOALS EXERCISE Connect your Goals to your WHY! This is an essential part of creating your learning plan. Your goals and your why determine where you need to start, or pick back up. Research states that once you write down your goals, you have a 42% greater chance of actually accomplishing them.

● Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, did a study on goal setting with 267 participants. She found that you are 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals just by writing them down.

Bottom line - don’t skip this step. It’s an important one!!!

What are SMART Goals? They are a well established tool that helps you clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively to increase your chances of achieving your goals. Using the SMART GOALS exercise below, set realistic goals, and identity action items you need to accomplish in order to reach those goals. Start with small, manageable goals that will help you achieve your long term goal.

Realistic Is this goal possible considering my everyday responsibilities, my time limits, my lifestyle, etc.?

I will learn to master and use 2 new verbs a week so that I can comfortably use my 10 new verbs during my Feb. P/T conferences.

Time-Bound State when you’ll get it done. Be specific on date and timeline.

By the end of Feb. I will be able to communicate to parents in P/T conferences using my 10 most relevant verbs in the past tense to express how my students are progressing in school.

PASO 4: Create a Learning Plan Follow these 3 essential steps in creating your personal learning plan.

1. Identify your learning styles 2. List the necessary vocabulary and grammar you need to achieve your

communicative goals. 3. Brainstorm and find Spanish learning resources

What type of learner are you? Do you learn best by listening, reading, writing, doing, seeing, speaking? Most of us have a preferred way (or two, three) to process, internalize, and synthesize information. We are most efficient with our learning, when we are able to find resources that align with how we best learn.

Generally speaking there are 4 types of learners: 1. Visual: You learn best when you see it. (charts, diagrams, images, etc.) 2. Auditory (or aural): You learn best when you hear it. (lectures, podcasts, etc.) 3. Reading / Writing: You learn best when you are able to read and/ or write about

it. (note taking, research, reading) 4. Kinesthetic: You learn best when you are able to do it. (hands on activity,

participatory, take a physically active role)

PASO 5: Establish your Conversational Practice Plan It’s one thing to have head knowledge of Spanish / English and entirely different to be able to use it. An excellent learning plan incorporates both learning resources (above) and a conversational plan (below). Communication practice is what brings language to life!

Who is Common Ground International? Rory and Leslie Foster founded Common Ground International in the fall of 2001 while they were teaching a variety of levels of Spanish. Together they have over 40 year of combined experience teaching Spanish / English at every level from university medical students to 4 year olds in preschool.

Some friends, who were about to start clinical rotations in their Doctorate of Nursing

program, requested specialized Spanish classes to help them be more successful in their rotations. The medical Spanish classes were a raving success, and the idea was born to form a company dedicated to helping students and professionals use Spanish in practical settings.

Over the years the idea has expanded to include other professional industries apart from medicine. Such as training teachers to successfully communicate in Spanish with their populations, helping high school Spanish students graduate with real Spanish conversational skills, American English training for professionals around the world, document translation, and Spanish – English interpreting services. A really unique part of Common Ground are their Spanish Immersion programs held several times a year in Central & South America.

The newest addition to Common Ground International is Intercambio: Spanish & English Language Exchange. This unique virtual Spanish & English Exchange program became a needed reality during the Global Coronavirus pandemic as Rory and Leslie saw a need to pivot their business as face to face classes and immersion programs were no longer an option BUT people still wanted to develop their Spanish and English skills across cultures and countries. With their deep connections in Central and South America and their dedicated community of learners in the US, Intercambio launched with several hundred members who saw the need and had the desire to continue to develop their speaking skills in a professional, communicative environment. ¿Qué son las metas smart? Son una herramienta bien establecida para ayudarte a aclarar tus ideas, enfocar tus esfuerzos, usar tu tiempo y recursos productivamente para incrementar tus posibilidades de lograr tus metas. Usando el ejercicio de METAS SMART a continuación, establece metas realistas e identifica las medidas que necesitas tomar para alcanzarlas. Muchos de nosotros tenemos una forma preferida (o dos, o tres) de procesar, internalizar y sintetizar información. Somos más eficientes con nuestro aprendizaje cuando podemos encontrar recursos que se alineen con nuestra mejor manera de aprender ¿Aprendes escuchando, leyendo, escribiendo, haciendo, viendo o hablando?

PASO 5: Establece tu Plan de Práctica Conversacional Una cosa es tener conocimiento teórico de inglés y otra muy diferente es poder usarlo. Un excelente plan de aprendizaje incorpora tanto recursos de aprendizaje (arriba) como un plan conversacional (abajo). ¡Practicar la comunicación es lo que le da vida al idioma!!

¡EVALÚA TU PROGRESO Y CELEBRA! Evalúa tu progreso regularmente (cada mes, cada trimestre, etc.) y celebra que estás logrando tus metas. ¿Cómo evalúo mis metas?

¿Qué es Common Ground International? Rory and Leslie Foster fundaron Common Ground International en el otoño de 2001 mientras

enseñaban diversos niveles de español / inglés. Juntos tienen más de 40 años de experiencia combinada de enseñanza de español de todos los niveles, desde estudiantes de medicina de nivel universitario hasta estudiantes de 4 años en preescolar.

Unos amigos, que estaban por empezar sus rotaciones clínicas del programa de Doctorado en enfermería, nos pidieron clases especializadas de español para ayudarles a tener más éxito con sus rotaciones. Las clases de español médico fueron un éxito rotundo, y la

idea nació para formar una empresa dedicada a ayudar a estudiantes y profesionales a usar el español en entornos profesionales.

Con el pasar de los años, la idea se ha expandido para incluir otras áreas profesionales además de medicina. Esto incluye entrenar a profesores para que se comuniquen exitosamente con las personas con las que trabajan, ayudar a estudiantes de secundaria a graduarse teniendo conocimientos reales de español, enseñar inglés estadounidense a profesionales de todo el mundo, traducción de documentos y servicios de interpretación inglés - español. Una característica única de Common Ground son sus programas de inmersión en español que se llevan a cabo desde hace varios años en Centro y Sudamérica.

La nueva adición a Common Ground International es Intercambio: Spanish & English Language Exchange. Este programa virtual de intercambio de inglés y español único se convirtió en una realidad necesaria durante la Pandemia Global de Coronavirus, cuando Rory y Leslie se vieron en la obligación de modificar su negocio ya que las clases presenciales y los programas de inmersión no eran más una opción, pero las personas todavía querían desarrollar sus habilidades de inglés y español a través de las culturas y los países. Con una profunda conexión con Centro y Sudamérica y con una comunidad dedicada de estudiantes en los Estados Unidos, Intercambio fue lanzado con algunos cientos de miembros que tenían la necesidad y el deseo de continuar desarrollando sus habilidades conversacionales en un ambiente profesional.
