•My first ideas are:

Textual Analysis The first text I will be looking at is a documentary from BBC 3

The text is called Bizarre ER, Series 3, episode 8.

•Editing is all quick cuts, which shows it gets to the point. Lots of on screen graphics giving pictures of accidents, there are also lots of fast forward movement, showing how long the audience is in the hospital for, which is interesting for the audience.

•Narration of a young female, gives a younger target audience, cracks jokes and explains well what is going on. Leaving the audience less to think about for themselves. Non-diagetic sound is used when shots are happening quickly, non diagetic sound of people hurting themselves in the on screen graphics. Dialogue is used when there is an interview going on, or patients/doctors talking.

•Camera shots are generally aimed at the patient wounds (close ups), patient gestures (close up, mid shot) and the doctors and nurses speaking. Lots of two shots, and long shots of the hospital itself, focus shot is used, so the background is fuzzy when interview is taking place.

•Mise-en-scene - dress codes – stereotypical of doctors and nurses. Patients dress codes are all different. Iconography is stereo-typical of hospital. Gesture codes shows realism as patients show they are in pain. Setting of the hospital shows realism.

Textual Analysis

The second I have analysed is ‘Don’t tell the bride’, which is also on BBC 3.

•Sound – There is a narrator describing what is happening in the programme, this helps the audience understand the programme. Dialogue is used for interviews, and interaction between the characters. You do not hear the interviewer speak. A little non diagetic tune is played in the background when the narrator is talking and when the cast are as well. This helps pace the documentary. Music changes with the mood of the scenes.

•Editing – They are all fast cuts, getting straight to the point, on screen graphics is used when the programme name appears on the screen.

•Camera work – 360 pan of the couple shows the audience, ‘happiness, fairytale’. Lots of mid shows of them talking. Close up of gestures, when they talk to the camera etc. More panning, showing real life, your there're. Hardly ever the same shot repeated twice, shows the excitement on the edge of your seat, never bores you due to a young audience.

•Mise-en-scene - Dress codes – normal, everyday clothes, depends on what people they are. Gesture codes shows happiness, laughing, crying – depressed – nervous. Setting in a city where they live. – realism.

What I have learnt from these documentaries

What I can take from this research is that a lot of filming will have to take place, to make a good 5 minute extract. This will be hard, as I will not be giving money to the characters so they might not want to get filmed a lot with no re-ward. What the documentary would be about is also challenging as you needed to think of a new fresh one.

The typical conventions I got from this documentary is that they always give the people in the programme an interview to show the audience what they are feeling etc. This makes the documentary more interesting as it just isn’t filming of the characters. If I make a documentary this is very helpful as I now have a better understanding of what the audience want, and what will make my documentary more exciting.

Research into brief 2 – Short film

Textual AnalysisMy first textual analysis for short film is a film called ‘ Catch up’, I found this on virgin media shorts.

• Sound – There is non diagetic sound of a song being played in the background as the clip is running, the pace of the song is in time with the clip. Fast and pacey , linking to the title ‘catch up’. Diagetic sound is heard when the character on screen make a movement or do something.

• Editing – All of the shots use quick cut transitions, there are some fast forward shots used to show that there trying hard to get somewhere quick.

• Camera work – Facial gestures use close up shots and mid shots, the running scenes try’s to explore different shots to keep the audience entertained, and keep the clip interesting. Long shots are used to show the audience the setting and what is happening around them, as they are on a busy high street. A hand held camera is used, to make the text look real to life, it also gives is quick pans and tracking shots.

• Mise-en-scene – casual costumes, such as jeans, t-shirt. Skirt and vest top for the females. The lighting is day light, iconography of the phone, (main prop in text). Setting of an high street and bus stop.

Textual AnalysisThe fourth analysis is called ‘Rush’ on virgin media shorts.

• Sound – Old fashioned, pacey song, goes well with the text, keeps the audience entertained. There is diagetic sound of the actors doing things such as running.#

• Editing – There Is no on screen graphics, and they are all quick cuts, to go along with the text.

• Camera work – The close up shots are shown when there is an important object such as the close, to tell the audience its about time and being late. Establighing shots of used when he is running in the forest to show he is in the middle of nowhere. Mid shots of him running show his facial expression. Lots of long shots.

• Mise-en-scene – Dress codes at the start of the clip in his boxers show he is lazy, its early. The coat shows he is a cold, lazy person, as it is quite nice weather. His gesture codes show that he worried/nervous, big eyes, mouth open, trying to get to his destination. Iconography of him looking at his watch shows the clip is all about time.

Why I have chosen this brief• I thought that this brief would be better for me as I already have experience of making

a film, such as my AS media coursework.

• I also think that this brief would be better as you can expand into so many different types of genre’s with film.

• I believed that documentary’s may be hard to get a good idea, which already hasn’t been done, in less made up

• There are so many different varieties of shots, and camera movements which can you can explore by making a pace full action film.

• Short films can be explored so much better due to having a small narrative.

• Much more conventions are in films than documentaries

• Short films would technically take a shorter amount of time to film, compared to a documentary as they film them for a year to get the best clips to use.

Industry research

‘ Catch up’

Production company – Virgin media shorts (is in a competition to be short film award of the year)

Stars – There are no actual celebrity stars in this film as it is a very low budget set on a camera phone, the two teenagers are aged around 18-19. One of which are who made the film.

Director – The director is also one of the actors in the film, showing that this film was very low budget and he wanted a lot of control of how the film would be made.

Box office takings – The film is not in the box office as it is only a short film, which has been made to go into a competition, although it is rated by viewers ***** meaning it must be quite a good hit.

Ratings/reviews – Viewer on virgin media shorts who have their own sign in, have rated it an average of 4/5 star. Members of virgin media shorts gave such comments as ‘Love this! Quick, simple, to the point and well shot…despite being on mobile phones, best of luck!!’ this shows that he thinks the film is really well and doing it on mobile phones is even more clever, I hope I can make better shots as I will be filming it on a DV camcorder so I will have the upper advantage to them.

Another comment by the viewers was ‘really like it. The pacing and quick cuts are great.’ This is showing that they have great camera work, as on a mobile phone the timing of the camera will be slower and not up to date.

In my film I wish to have this same effect as I believe more upbeat short films are a lot more engaging and exciting.

Audience profile for Catch Up• Target audience between the ages of 15-30. This is because the film has conventions of fast,

pace full and action, typical of an youth film.• Mainly male as this is stereo-typical of what males like, for example lots of action suspense.• Their wages will be from £10-30,000 (if at all) due to the fact they would have an average job and

because they are young it would possible be only their first full time job.• The occupation would be such things as a builder, a standard job, because they are more likely

to look on the internet to watch short films, rather than a doctor. . Also half of my target audience would be in education, and have a lot of free time after school and weekends to go on the internet or watch short films. A further reason for university students is that they use the internet a lot, so my short film will be viral marketed well, they will also be in student houses so the theory called the two step flow may happen.

• Certain hobbies would be such things as video games and going on the internet, because they can relate the film to the game, as video games and movie link. Such as resident evil and free running games such as mirrors edge, which one of is a game and a film. Also films have the same conventions to games, such as the fast action.

Whilst doing this task I realised that it is the same audience of which I am looking for, so both my and this films audience profile are very similar. This will make it easier to target my audience and no exactly what they are looking for.

Uses and gratifications applied to Catch Up

Entertainment – This film can be seen to be entertaining as the fast pace and action makes the film exciting. You could go on the internet with your friends and show each other different films including this one which you think is good. You might watch this film to feel escapism, this is when you get trapped in the film getting you away from the real life. Watching this film may also to pass time, you enjoy it so looking at it will pass time quicker.

Personal identity – By watching this film the audience member may be thinking would he also go to all this trouble to give a girl back her phone, also they may be thinking does this person have the same dress sense as me or personality.

Information – In this text the audience may look at this for information such as what they can expect from a short film, what sort of genres are in a short film. They can also get information about the genre itself.

• There are no issues in this clip as it is fun and friendly to everyone.

• I think this clip would be rated PG as maybe a young child may get scared from all the fast transitions the movie gives.

Industry research into Rush

‘Rush’

Production company – Virgin media mobile shorts winner

Stars – Directing, starring and producing Michael Mann (University student)

No real actual stars as it’s a competition for average people to make a film and win, with no budget.

Director – Michael Mann (University student from Preston)

Box office taking’s – 235 views on Youtube, this is not that good as YouTube is for the whole world to see and 235 is quite a small number. If I were to set my film on YouTube I would at least hope for the 500 mark to make it seem well liked.

Ratings/reviews – On you tube there is only one review by someone saying ‘way I love the bit at the end’, this shows that the film is not that loved by the audience, and for my piece I should step away from this idea and think of something more original. There is not rating for it on YouTube and the clip has been taken off virgin media shorts.

no he is on a quest somewhere, the excitement of thinking “will he make it there” and what's going to happen on the way makes it more entertaining. You could go on the internet with your friends and show each other different films including this one which you think is good. You might watch this film to feel escapism, this is when you get trapped in the film getting you away from the real life. Watching this short film may be to pass time, a fun and relaxing way to do so, as films should be nice and relaxing on your sofa or the computer chair.

Personal Identity – From the film you could relate the character as yourself, from what he wears, his fitness of running all the time. You can ask yourself questions such as “would I wear that coat”, would I be bothered to run all that way”. It makes you question who you are, and in films I think if you get the audience to do this, it is very good as then you no they are interested in the film and engaged.

• I think that rush would be rated U as it shows no sign of any violence or language, the cuts are not quick and the music is happy showing that it is family friendly.

Summary of my industry research for Rush

• It is good that my audience profile is very similar to Rush as then I no my film may have some of the same conventions as this short film.

• I think my film will need to have something which Rush doesn’t have so I can reach it least 500 views on You tube to say my film is even a little bit successful, this just may be because Virgin Media shorts did not distribute the film enough for people to no about it, where as I would be my own production company, so I could upload my video onto Google videos, face book, make a group about my new film etc.

• For the film Rush there was only one star, who also produced and directed the film, I think if I got different actor/actresses then maybe my film would appeal to a wider audience giving it better reviews and views on youtube.

• My uses and gratifications slide for the film Rush was helpful as I was then able to see what made the film interesting, fun to watch and how I can add this into my film, for example the thought of someone going on an adventure, travelling to get somewhere excites the audience as it gives open questions of what they think might happen and this keeps them entertained.

The audience could use my short film for entertainment, as they could go onto the internet and watch my film for free with their friends, another reason why they might want to watch my short film is to escape the real world and just relax (escapism). My audience could also watch my film to pass time, for example if they were waiting to go out with their friends or during a work break.

Information –

My audience may get information out of my film such as questions “what is a short film?”, or “what can I expect to see out of short films?”. Also the film may be on a related topic they may be thinking about, such as gun crime and it answers some of the audience’s questions.

Social interaction –

The film could be talked about in several ways, for example the genre of the text could be related to a full length film, what are the conventions in both, or does anything get changed?. Also the narrative could be spoken about between friends, family or even strangers due to the excitement of the text, what they agreed was good about the story, what I could of changed. My film could also get people who don’t know each other to talk, make friends, be a conversation starter. Also it could make people be friends on the internet who post blogs about their views to each other about the film. This leads other people to talk about the film and debates.

Personal identity –

In my short film, you could relate yourself to the characters and see if they act like you at all, or would you make the same choices which they do or actions.

My film ideasSetting – I was thinking of setting one side of my film along Bristol docks, this

is because it is an unusual setting and brings more conventions than a road or a typical thriller/horror scene in a forest. The female’s side of the story could lie along maybe the centre of Bristol where the shops are, this would be good as the surrounding’s of people would be interesting.

Props – Boy – Casual polo shirt, jeans, shoes not trainers. Holding a mobile phone.

Girl – in a dress (venerable) high heels, little purse and a mobile phone.

Possible film titles

The docks – Gives conventions of something happening near the water, the misty river. Makes you think of films such as ‘Friday 13th’, which is a classic blood gore. (although I am not planning my film to be like that).

Image – I think that the text is very bold and clear, puts the title like a bit of a teaser, don’t know what to expect.

The signs - I believe that this gives the audience an understanding of what is happening when they read the blurb of the film, links together.

Film Logo/poster

I want the logo/poster of the film to be a establishing shot of the Bristol docks, with a calm mist to shadow over the top, at the back of the picture over the other side of the docks, I would have a shadow light up against a building to show something is out there.

I don’t want it to be night, but dusk so that the camera can pick up the atmosphere well, and no one will find it hard to see.

My film title will be in front of this shot, fading in with the background.

My film idea 2• There will 3 MAIN character’s (2 girls,1 boy)• The boy will be talking to one of the girls by texting, going on a train/walk to

meet her. Keep this upbeat, fast.• He will run into problems on the way (fast paced)• He & she will be having proper going out clothes, e.g. smart for a

meal/clubbing.• Things are not going his way for the boy, but he gets to where he wants to

in the end. (such trouble as missing bus, loses wallet, runs into thugs, etc (this is only a brief idea)

• She is on the other split screen (at times) getting ready to go out and meet him. Audience no she is there but doesn’t pay as much attention.

• A twist at the end, where you realise he wasn’t off to meet her but another girl the whole time.

• She stands there in the cold dark, seeing the boy meet up with another girl.• The psycho stands there, with a knife gripping hard ends on a cliff hanger

Reasons for location

• Bristol docks (castle parks) is very open land, which shows a lot of scenery.

• The water shows romance, conventions of thriller such as films as ‘Friday 13th’ and ‘open water’.

• I think it makes my film more interesting than just an open village and also this gives my film more of a scene, something to talk about.

• My choice for my title will be ‘Fantasy’ I think this grips the audience attention and gives some conventions of what the film may be about. I have chose the roses dead/alive coming out of the writing because I think it is a strong image of what happens In the film. It also gives more character to the title and interreges my audience.

Film poster 2For my film poster now, I think it would be a good idea of the boy holding the

girl he's going to meet around the shoulder smiling, and the girl who does not get met stood in the background staring at them with a dark light over her, holding a knife tightly in her hand. I think Bristol docks would still be a good setting for this as I could take photos over the star lit bridge. It shows my audience that there is some sort of romance in the film, although it may also be a thriller. I used the bridge because I love the lighting of it at night and I think this might really grasp the romantic tension as it shows a slight romance/gore.

Why I chose these actors

• They are just my piers so I no them very well.• 2 of the 3 performed in my last piece of

coursework, so I no we work well together and I can communicate easily.

• There is no cost of them as I have no budget/costs.

• I can meet up with them easily as we live in the same village, so we can film whenever.

Censorship issues

• My film would be a 15, this is for the plain fact of the knife scene at the end, giving my film a thriller/violent convention to it. I think this would be to much for a child around the age of 12 and this is why I have chose this. This would also make more money as the age of 15 plus is around the age teenagers watch videos on YouTube and go on social networking sites where people talk about films etc.

Title Change

• I am now wishing to change the title of my film.• The feed back I got of my peers was that it was a good design, but it

seemed a bit to feminine for the type of audience I wanted to appeal to (Mainly male, 15-35).

• So whilst creating my poster, which ii also changed I thought of a good title with what I think is a great bold text, showing the connotation of the colour red which is danger, fear.

• As when you look at my poster, I have gone against my research.

• This was a gut instinct of mine, that I wanted to use a more scary, twisted poster as I think it would really intrigue my audience.

• The saw posters also do this and I think this is a great effect.

• Although I do not wish my film to be like the saw films, mine will be less violent, calmer and show a little bit of happiness.

My audience think that the film should not drag on as it is very short. I don’t agree with this as I think it makes it exciting as just below 50% of the people I asked agree. This goes against my hypothesis, but maybe they decided to take the middle option as it is the most ‘safe’.

Front Poster Research

The poster shown on the right, is a film which was in the cinema, but the film was based on a short film and it just got developed. This is the type of quality which my film will just not be able to have, as I am having no costs, and I don’t have the money, time or equipment to make such a detailed poster as this one. Also it is animated which my film is not, so the detail will just not be there, I would need something such as CGI (computer graphic imagery) to pull off such a detailed poster like this.

This poster here shows the mid-shot of what I want the couple in my film to be like, although I don’t want them kissing, just his arm round her back. I like the way its very up close and gets to the point, i don’t want mine to be like that as I want the couple to more of the right of the poster, and in the background the psychopath with the knife.

For my poster, I want to use a ‘dusk’ look, where as you can see in the picture (left) it is a sun down, orangey look where you will get the image of romance, but also as it is not light, my audience may also be able to pick up the thriller element of the film.

This is another type of mood, colour, type of light I may include instead in my poster. This is because it goes well with what the characters are doing at the time, makes it more romantic, but also goes against the usual connotation of bright lights being all bright, happy as the knife scene would work well round the night time.

This is a picture taken from the empire website, I will be copying magazine reviews but this gives you an idea of what I am aiming mine to look like.

This is an review taking from the magazine, TV and internet company E! entertainment. This is obviously set out different than the magazine review but it gives you the main idea.

As you can see in this piece of text, the picture is very big with a caption on top, I wish for my title to be on top and have the writing underneath with the production information, ratings etc.

I wish to use the magazine of Empire to do this as I believe it is very formal but also very creative.

Changing ideas

• As when you look at my poster, I have gone against my research.

• This was a gut instinct of mine, that I wanted to use a more scary, twisted poster as I think it would really intrigue my audience.

• The saw posters also do this and I think this is a great effect.

• Although I do not wish my film to be like the saw films, mine will be less violent, calmer and show a little bit of happiness.

Ancillary Task First DraftAs you can see from this, it looks a bit bare, I thought I needed to add a bit more to the poster to make it more interesting, I really liked the font so I decided to keep this, although I did really want to roses in the text. The problem was that it didn’t really seem to work that well.

The lighting was also way to dark, and you can barely see anything, this was something I really needed to sort out.

Ancillary Task First Draft

This is what I first created when I did my film review, I looked very closely at the empire magazines, and saw this type of layout which I very much liked. So I decided to go with this and just edit it, to make it glossy as you would see in a top magazine. Everything here was done by scratch, I even made the logo of ‘in cinemas’ just the same as they do in the empire magazines. There was a lot of erasing and starting over on certain parts, especially the border as I needed it to fit perfectly.

Ancillary Task - Second Draft

This was my second draft of the poster, I added a billing block into my poster, to make it look like a real film poster. I thought this was the main thing which I had to do, but after finishing the billing block I still thought it looked a little bit bare. I lightened the text slightly so the picture comes out better, but on this document it still looks the same. I needed to think about what I had to do to make mine feel like a real poster.

This is my second draft which is near enough complete, I added in my review, which I believed it made it look a lot more real. I want to change the wording of my plot, as I think it does not grab the audiences attention that much.

I believe the font I chose went well with the layout of the review, its bold and clear, giving it a nice edge.

This is my final poster for my ancillary task, I added a comment from ‘The Times’ as I believe it made it look more entertaining and realistic for the audience. It used up the space well which was needed as it looked a little bland before. I also added to my billing block, so it looks like it has more depth to it and like all others. Where it tells you pretty much everyone who worked in the production of the film and I also have the distributors.
