WILLAMSON COUNTY, TEXAS

CITY OF HUTTO

Jake’s Bridge in Hutto, TexasMixed Use Neighbourhood ProjectJune, 2009 - PresentArea: 105 acres

Hutto was recognized as one of the fastest growing cities in Tex-as. The SmartCode that was adopted by the city is specifically designed to accommodate this inflow of new people by organiz-ing them into safe, walkable communities instead of the apart-ment complexes. The SmartCode is designed to traditional single family home neighborhoods or large combat urban sprawl, and preserve as much of the landscape as possible. For this reason, parks and playgrounds are required features, as well as tree lined streets and strict landscaping standards that are friendly to pedestrians and cyclists.

the SmartCode provides an effective tool for Hutto to add traditional neighborhoods to the lifestyle choices that it has to offer. Instead of the single product residential subdivisions built next to large blocks of apart-ment buildings and a retail strip center, the form-based Traditional Neigh-borhood Development builds a variety of single and multifamily residential products, neighborhood office and retail space, schools, churches, parks and playgrounds within a five to ten minute walk of each other.

Shiloh at Jake’s Bridge will have various levels of density. The center of the development will be most dense, with up to 20 residences per acre—versus about four per acre in a neighborhood of single-family homes.Residences will be mixed with businesses, and the perimeter will be more rural with land designated for parks. Plans call for residences to be within a quarter-mile of community features, including busi-nesses, schools, civic centers and parks. Strict zon-ing helps ensure property use conforms to the over-all vision.

The new campus of the university is located at the outskirts of Sulaymani-yah city and it’s currently under construction, the entire project should be completed by 2012, the new campus would be the one of the largest campuses in the region, the budget for its construction is nearly 450 mil-lion US dollars. The new campus will host 20 000 students not only from Iraq but also from other countries all over the world.Tha campus includes many acadimec buildings, sports facilities, library, health center, presidency , students center and students dormitories. The educational objectives and mission of the university include a strong focus on the individual and the community within the learning environ-ment. The form of the new campus is a response to the university’s so-cial goals and commitment towards contemporary learning relationships. Taking into account the ecological forces and systems that influence the site, together with a careful positioning and orientation of new buildings to promote natural ventilation and daylighting, the campus is a model of sustainable strategies.

Sulaimani University Campus - IraqPresidencyConstruction Area: 33,174 sq.ft

Presidency is one of the most important buildings in the campus. This is mainly due to its symbolic nature, being the administrative center of the university.

The importance of the building is further stressed by its unique lo-cation. These critical location of the hill has lead to a decision that the building should not be too tall in order not to overwhelm the total sihouette created by college buildings and not to stand too disproportione with respect to the Kirkuk Road.

It is thus decided that the height of the building should not exceed 5 or 6 floors. In the general layout, the space requirements is cat-egorized functionally into four main zones.

A- Presidency OfficesB- OfficesC- Registration Affairs AreaD- University Club and the Media Center

The design is based on the integration of these functional zones as articulation of blocks in the form af arc segments. All the blocks are related to each other with a circular space which also function as a common area, enrichening the spatial quality of the connection between the blocks.
