517 Flinders Lane gave me the opportunity to take the initiative and really form a project. As well as presenting a design which accorded with the client’s wishes I had a personal agenda to develop a new landmark for Melbourne that would be champion sustainability.

I was responsible for analysing the site designing a suitable concept to accord with the client’s wishes, client liaison, plant selection, documentation and concept presentation. As part of the site analysis I learnt how to produce a water balance calculation for the site using current data. Modelling the site in SketchUp, I was able to generate an accurate solar analysis and play with and form the design in 3D.

Plant Selection These plants have not only been selected for their suitability to the rooftop environmental conditions; they have also been selected for their form, fl owers, and in some cases their edibility. Plant species will blend over the entire rooftop, but in some areas there will be a bias towards certain types.

In the decorative/environmental garden beds, species will have insect/ bird attracting qualities or a herb that makes a handy addition a BBQ.

In the relaxation zone, plants will have a bias for striking sculptural form - to inspire daydreams of more exotic locales.

Plant species in the vegetable beds will be an add hock seasonal mixture of whatever tickles a gardener’s fancy. The main structure for this area will come from the distinct row of espalier fruit trees.

The fi nal concept responded to the design brief by creating four different spaces: for: Exercise, Exploration of the Environment, Relaxation & Entertainment and Produce. The real challenge of this design was fi nding a single design language to unite these different spaces. Inspiration was taken from ‘Make Do & Mend’ aesthetic and the profi le of a city skyline.

To realise these objectives, the tennis court was moved to one corner to free up space to create an entertainment garden. Sports curtains divided the two areas but provided fl exibility to unite the spaces when required. A more active entertaining area with a BBQ led to a quieter retreat space. Productive garden space was incorporated in the rear of the garden - with potential to expand if demand grows.

Design visualisations generated using SketchUp. I was keen to connect the rooftop down into the adjacent laneway - so proposed continuing the characteristic staggered timber panels down the stairwell wall.

Page 5: My Portfolio

This rooftop is designed to be explored, to have hidden retreats, a path that wanders through a sculpture and views framed by trailing plants.

Herbs will peek across the edges of decking and trail along paths inviting their use in a quick salad or a crush of their leaves to release their fresh aroma.

Part of this exploration will be the discovery of birds and insects drawn to the rooftop by plants which extend their habitat.

Birds will also be encouraged by locating some simple bird houses. Bees will be encouraged by fl owering fruiting trees and nectar rich vegetation. Both birds and bees would benefi t from a source of water.

1. Quirky intimate solar powered lighting

2. A state of the art BBQ to facilitate gatherings

3. A shade structure will provide respite from the sun in the summer months

The main spot to sit will be under a canopy to the centre of the eastern rooftop edge. Tennis matched can be watched in between chatter and mouthfuls of food.

The BBQ unit will feature a sink, a fridge and an extended benchtop for food preparation. A shade structure will encourage people to linger as they soak up the atmosphere.

To the south of the building, a trellis rises up to enclose a raised deck with dappled shade also framing city views. A solar panel could be installed to the top of the nearby emergency exit stairwell to provide ambient lighting to the trellis.

1. Storage is provided by a garden shed

2. Espalier fruit trees thrive in tight spaces

3. The produce growing area can initially be expanded using pots

1.

2.

3.

The produce section of the garden is not to be underestimated. Discreetly tucked around the side of the lift shaft building complex it will provide a haven to enthusiastic gardeners.

Espalier trees line the northeastern wall - taking full advantage of the summer morning sun. A variety of vegetables can be planted at their bases with handy access to the potting table and garden shed.

Double doors allow access through the garden shed and out into the bee enclosure. In this location the bees will remain relatively undisturbed by general rooftop users and be left to the business of making honey,

There is an opportunity to expand the produce section if demand for it grows. Initially, pots could be added to the northern edge of the rooftop. Later, as enthusiasm grows, decorative garden beds could be repurposed for vegetable growing.

Although the sheer size of the tennis court ensures that it is a dominant component of the rooftop, curtain dividers and a continuation of the thematic cladding integrate it into the rest of the rooftop.

The court will have a synthetic grass fi nish with a Zinco green roof build up underneath. This build up will drain excess water to storage but also retain a certain volume which will be evaporate during drier conditions. This evaporation will create a cooler micro-environment around the court crating a more pleasant environment for tennis players and rooftop vegetation alike.

Goulburn Street Carpark Greening proposal was commissioned by the City of Sydney to explore the viability of realising Collider’s Green Vision. This in itself was an interesting proposition as Collider are Graphic Artists who guided to their concept using aesthetic sense only (images shown on right).

These pictures created the project brief. It was my responsibility to translate these images into a technically achievable proposal that effortlessly achieved the desired green coverage. This included determining suitable construction detailing, appropriate plant selection, considering ease of future maintenance and water harvesting, scrubbing and re-circulating this water to irrigate the green systems. Stonnington Place greenwall was developed for a private garden here in Melbourne. I produced concept drawings and presented them to the Client, Project Manager & Landscape Architect.

Plant selection was heavily restricted by the fact that this was a vertical garden, the southern aspect of the wall, shading by the adjacent building, the heights of suitable plants, irritant properties of particular plants, the colour palette and the texture of suitable plants. The fi nal hurdle to the planting palette was sourcing suitable quantities of appropriate plants up in Sydney!

EcoVert™ living greenwalls are designed to minimise the frequency of maintenance by the creation of a safe and sustainable living environment for the plants. However, as is the nature of plant growth, vegetation does require management, a maintenance plan is integral to the long term

health and aesthetic appearance of your Living wall. With this in mind, included as standard in our projects is 8 weeks on site establishment maintenance, this ensures the plants a healthy start. Once the system is established we recommend ongoing annual maintenance programs, and offer packages tailored to suit your requirements.

Maintenance Plans can include:Plant growth managementDead plant removal and replacementMaintenance of irrigation, nutrient dosing and lighting systemsFertilisingPest controlMaintenance Reports

Living Greenwalls, or vertical gardens, are an innovative solution that allows us to bring more plants into our lives where we have previously not had the space. They are also a contemporary decorative feature that intrigue and lift anyone in their presence.

A greenwall is a mass planted area mounted vertically on a wall. To achieve this, the system needs to be lightweight and Junglefy has developed a modular system called ecoVert™ constructed

from recycled plastic, which includes a custom lightweight growing media of moisture retentive ingredients, as opposed to a heavy soil. At a sleek ~150mm wide, from wall to face of module, an ecoVert™ system enhances usable space without intruding.

Plant species selection for a greenwall is dependent on its environment, but options are extensive and many species happily thrive in greenwalls. Junglefy’s custom irrigation systems and growing media create ideal conditions for plant growth and the results are spectacular.

Greenwalls can be planted to form lush green jungles or contemporary and chic designs. Junglefy offers custom greenwall design through a collaborative approach between landscape architects and horticulturists, and work openly with clients to meet their every need.

City Street was one of several streets which VicUrban is in the process of redeveloping as part of its ‘Revitalising Central Dandenong’ Initiative.

In true ASPECT style I was thrown in at the deep end with this one - I was responsible for co-ordinating the entire landscape drawing package. At the same time I was resolving technical issues and ensuring that the project’s aesthetic integrity was conveyed by detail design.

I also relished my role in reviewing the civil engineering documentation and co-ordinating changes. I learnt to appreciate the project from an engineer’s perspective and understand their motivations.

An enormous 56 Landscape and 97 Civil Engineering drawings were created, developed and revised to second revision tender documents in only three months.
