My Philosophy on Education

You must consistently strive for self-growth and spark that same growth in your students.

It is the ability to spark passion and growth that makes an educator effective. Years after

teaching a class, the educator hopes to have helped equip students with good habits and

competent techniques that they will use to contribute to the next generation of learners. Since I

believe students are preparing to become competent members of society, I believe the

educational experience should help develop people skills that students will use to mediate

conflicts and prepare themselves for life outside of school.

Recognizing that differentiated instruction is key to meaningful learning, I believe it is

important to adapt my instruction techniques to meet the multiple needs of students with varied

learning predispositions. It is the varied way in which we learn and pass on that knowledge that

adds individuality to society and cultivates a wide breath of experience. Just as we don’t look

the same, sound the same or behave the same…we don’t learn the same. It is my goal to be

adaptive, approachable and responsive to meet the many different learning needs of students.

Times are consistently changing and it is essential that education always be on the

forefront of change and cutting edge technology. We are educating students who need to be

competitive in the job market. If they have access to progressive technology in the classroom it

will help ease their transitions into the workforce after graduation. American education is on the

forefront of contemporary practices but I believe it is also our history of traditional values that

has shaped and developed a competent educational model. It is important that traditional values

of respect, honesty and kindness be remembered and practiced.

It is our future that furthers innovations and advances the heights of our learning capacity.

Valuing innovation and progressive technology helps our students become adaptive intelligent

adults. Innovation breathes life into stale ideas. It is the job of educators to be a leader in

introducing such innovation.  It is essential to give the future generation current technology,

challenging subject material, and process thinking assignments that will help them stretch their

minds and push their limits.

There are five rules that I base my classroom management strategies on:

1. Give respect, get respect, repeat

2. Being on time is important

3. Listen and silent are spelled with the same letters. Students are expected to listen to

each other.

4. Differences are great (not odd) and students must be accepting of each other.

5. Taking chances and being wrong are great if you learn from them. “You miss 100% of

the shots you never take.” – Wayne Gretsky

I believe educators need to be firm but fair and convey this firm fairness fearlessly in the

classroom. Consistency earns respect. Students need to know that they are being held to high

expectations and be pushed to just beyond where they expect to achieve.

Encouraging responsible behavior, stating behavioral expectations, building conflict

resolution skills and independent learning are all instrumental components in building a

community of learners. It is the extreme challenge of the educator to help build relationships.

Students need healthy relationships that foster desire for engaged learning. Students need to feel

connected to their community, peers, teachers and the outside world. In addition, they need a

sense of belonging that they can validate based on their individual contribution of work and

talents. Students need not only know that they matter but how they matter, why they matter and

how they are unique.
