He was King Henry II’s best friend and when Henry needed his help , Thomas was there. Henry needed someone to take over the Catholic Church in England, so he asked Becket. Another reason why Becket was a significant person though was that once he took the job as the leader of the church he sided with the Pope. It was his duty to do his job as head priest, even if he disappointed his best friend, King Henry. Because Thomas Becket was such an honorable man though, he was murdered and became a saint; he is worshipped by the British people even today. A third significant person during his era of British History was the Roman Catholic Monk(s) who translated all of the great pieces of literature into English. These monks were the only educated people in the land, and education equals power. When they wrote down “The Seafarer” and “The Wanderer”, they changed them both into religious pieces; for centuries now, these two pieces of literature have been shared with millions and can now be used to help convert people to Christianity. In short, Saint Augustine, Thomas Becket, and the Roman Catholic monks forever changed religion for the English speaking world.
