Space Explorer
Authors use words to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. Museums use objects, photographs, pictures, letters, film and sound. Find a space in the Little Soldier gallery and stand still for as long as you can.

SURVIVALThe characters in The Silver Sword
needed survival skills to get to Switzerland and they also had to
make decisions. What skills do you need in your daily life?
What new skills would you like to learn?

IDENTITY Reading books can help us imagine
what it would be like to be in someone else’s shoes. Choose one of
the characters from the exhibition. What three things do you think most
shaped who they are? What three things have most shaped
who you are?
What sounds can you hear?
What can you see?
What does it tell you about Kaninda’s life?
How does this space make you feel?

Be an AuthorAt the very end of the exhibition you will find a toy dog. Michael Morpurgo, author of War Horse has written a new book, called
Little Manfred, inspired by this object. Why not choose an object from one of the museum’s displays and create your own story?
Little Manfred and other war stories for children and adults alike are available to purchase from the museum shop.
Take partThe story doesn’t end here, a host of fun and informative events
are on offer to help bring the themes of the exhibition to life. There’s free family fun in creative craft sessions, interactive
storytelling and the chance to get hands on with real artefacts. Events run every day at weekends and during school holidays.
The whole family can get involved.
