My journey with iRIS and Mike
Michelle Fritche
Where we began…
• Economically and socially deprived area
• 23 Year 6 children• Half on SEN register• 10 boys, 9 reluctant writers• Poor attitude to learning
• Requires Improvement teaching in Spring 1 2014
Context…• New head - different style of leadership – more focus on
T&L.
• Staff encouraged and empowering to drive forward their own CPD.
• Established staff were reluctant, previous inspection was ‘good’.
• School worked with Mike Fleetham, Education Consultant, to coach staff so that there was a focus on developing children’s independent skills.
• Staff were carefully put into Learning Trios by Strategic Leadership Team and Mike.
• As well as trio work, I was lucky enough to receive one to one coaching …
What we did
• Videoed them!
• Shocked and appalled – how was this happening in my classroom?
• No independent learning skills
• I was very cross and upset…
• Where on earth do I begin?!
The change
• New classroom organisation
• New classroom management system
• Changed the language I use
• Asked them what learning is
• Asked them what progress is
• Asked them how these things felt…
What is learning?
How does it feel when we learn?
How does it feel when we make progress?
How does it feel when
something is hard or we get
stuck?1. Brian your brain2.Buddy3.Bits and Bobs4.Boss
Let’s line up!
You need to place yourself on the scale.
We all start at 0 and can move to 5.
We will do this in lessons when we think about our progress, using the success criteria as a guide.
• How good are you at maths?
• How good are you at telling jokes?
• How good a friend are you?
• How good are you at swimming?
• How good are you at football?
• How good are you at making tea?
And now…
• It is embedded within each of my children because we attached learning and progress to emotions.
• I was graded by a
HMI inspector as
outstanding.
• Time scale… 7 weeks!
But wait…there’s more...
• Used iRIS with parents for behaviour management.
• Am part of a team who coach each other in school.
• Have focused on particular groups of children.
• Have focused on particular aspects of the curriculum.
• Built up my confidence
