My history means the roots of my belonging.

Economic proleMy grandparents were born around 1930s. Mygrandfather was born in a village named udlibut after some years they migrated to!eedwana a bigger village with his family.!eedwana is in "agaur district of #a$asthan.Economically my grandparents belonged to therural lower middle class of the society at that

time.My grand parents were engaged in thetraditional agriculture and horticulture. %heyare traditional because our caste is associatedwith this occupation.&hen my grandfather $oined the governmentservice as he wanted a di'erent path( mygrandmother too all the responsibility of the

farms on her shoulder ( she did the managerialtas as well as added to the wor force at thefarms. )he too care of all the re*uirements ofthe farm and of the house.

My grand parents on maternal side wereengaged in shop eeping and horticulture. Mygrandmother on maternal side also helped my

grandfather in horticulture."ow lets tal about my parents generation. My grand parents had ve sons and threedaughters. +mong ve sons four are inbusiness and one in service. %wo brothers ofmy father were initially in service but they left

their services to do business. %his shows thatbusiness became the rst preference of man inthe family of that generation. +mong the vedaughter,in,laws only one is a woring woman

she is a doctor other four remained to behousewives either due to family responsibilities or due lac of professionaleducation. My father started roadconstruction and a crusher in 19- with histwo brothers. My mother is a housewife. Myfather belongs to upper middle strata of thesociety this change in the economic level is

due to the change in occupation as my fatheropted for business rather then agriculture andalso migration as my father migrated from!eedwana to di'erent places for his businesssometimes for months and some times foryears.

Educational bacground and gender"ow lets have loo on how the education and

perspective towards it changed overgeneration.Education in rural 30s was limited to primaryeducation for layman. My grandparents didonly their primary schooling . My grandfathercould not study because he had to help his

father on farms and my grandmother was sentto school but did not nd it interesting so sheleft after her primary education. )he alwaysregretted that why she did not go school atthat time. My grandfather also had a deepunderstanding of education as a vital part of

ones life. %hey tried their best to giveeducation to their children.+mong ve only my father is the one whocould not study beyond school level because

one of my fathers brother died and thenancial condition of the family was very weaso he had to tae upon the business and leaveeducation. My mother has also done her schooling shewas the rst girl in her family who completedher schooling. My uncles on the maternal sidehave completed their education till schooling.

+s my mother was the rst girl to completeher schooling this thing bought a huge changein mindsets of my grandparents towardseducation of girls.

"ow comes the third generation of my familywhich includes me. / am the youngest in thethird generation of my family. Even the third

generation has seen many changes in it. Mycousin brothers have done their graduation orpost graduation in di'erent elds. My cousinsisters have done their graduation and somethem have done post graduation also butinteresting fact about their education is thatall of them had ome science as their optionalsub$ect in graduation this not because they

wanted to study this but because this was theonly sub$ect available as sub$ect they had nochoice in opting because of the educationsystem.

My sister is the rst girl who is doing aprofessional course before marriage and / amrst girl who is sent out to study.%he perspective towards girls education is

changing towards positive and now educationis considered important for everyone.+s we say every thing have reason behind it soeven the changes in my family also have somereason behind it. Migration from rural to urbanareas changed the mindsets. %his providededucational opportunities and freedom to optfor a di'erent eld of occupation. ut the

irony of the situation was this before me not asingle girl was e2pected to enter into theprofessional realm but now it has changed thisshows that mind sets towards girls educationand opting for a profession have changed."ow lets have loo into marriage from genderpoint of view women in my rst generation didnot have a choice of opting for a partner but it

changed after that now they have e*ualfreedom to give their preference for a partner.Male and female are treated e*ually.

aste and religion&e belong to Mali or )aini caste of indureligion. 4ur caste is associated withhorticulture and agriculture. aste has always

remained a very important part of my familysidentity but it never over came the identity ofregion. %here has been a very little change inthe practices form what was practiced by ourancestors. Marriage( a childs birth(inauguration everything is celebrated as they

were earlier. 5estivals lie asoda ( %ee6(7angore( )in$ara and the practice of going toour uldevi after any celebration is stillcontinuing till today. ut there are e'ects of

western culture in them which do not changeanything but adds to it for e2ample cutting ofribbon before entering into a new house issuch a sign of western culture.%here has been no inter caste marriage till nowin my family this shows that caste plays animportant role in their identity.

8anguagesMarwari is the language which my familyspeas while taling to the other members ofthe family but other than that most of thepeople now indi and English. %he thirdgeneration is well versed with English which isthe third language of my family because ofEnglish medium education. / always lived in a

$oint family so / retained my mother tonguebut the fourth generation that is my nephewsand niece are not able to retain because theylive in nuclear family even though their familyspeas Marwari but they can not spea it.Marwari is written in devnagari script only.

    My sense of identity

/ am a /ndian girl who is a Marwari from#a$asthan belongs to !eedwana town of"agaur district. %hen comes that / am induand )aini by caste. 5or me the identity of beingan /ndian is most important but / also thinthat my regional identity and my culture are a

vital part of what maes me as an individual. My identity of being a girl also has ubi*uitouspresence in my identity. My siblings also have the same sense of

identity. ut those who are living in nuclearfamily and away from the native region have avery less space for the native place in theirsense of identity. My history is a very important part of myidentity.
