MY DESIGN ACCESSORIES 3D-PRINTED & LASER-CUT OBJECTS DESIGN COMPETITION

C alled by some observers as “an industrial revolution for the digital age”, rapid

manufacturing has been changing the face of the production industry for some time now. Many believe that 3D-printing technology and laser-cutting techniques are democratizing design and manufacturing, making it more accessible and less dependent on economies of scale. Traditional manufacturing methods often come with prohibitive tooling costs meaning that smaller companies and individuals are often priced out of the market when it comes to product development. Digital fabrication has been hailed as a game changer though and

has enabled businesses to make advances in manufacturing that were previously unthinkable.

3D printing is a term used to describe a range of emerging technologies that produce a tangible product from three-dimensional computer data. In the industry the technology is often referred to as “Additive Manufacturing”, as the approach works by bonding together two-dimensional layers of material, layer-by-layer, until the 3D part is complete.

Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial

manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, and hobbyists.

As these technologies matured, the range of materials available increased and improvements in mechanical properties and longevity came along with it. In parallel, the machines have become larger and faster, becoming more productive and economic in terms of volume production.

Home interior, office accessory and gadget designs, were the first applications where digital fabrication was really used to manufacture products, rather than

prototypes only. Around the turn of the millennium some young creative designers who had been exposed to rapid prototyping technologies

at university, started establishing businesses selling interior products, from

lamp fittings and fruit bowls, to furniture and art, all produced by using digital fabrication methods.

One of the most significant aspects of these techniques is the ability to manufacture complex geometries with little to no production defect. In fact, they are often used to make products that

are impossible to produce using traditional processes such as plastic injection molding.

We ask designers like you to explore this geometric flexibility and enabling greater and greater levels of product differentiation.

At the end, no digital fabrication product ever needs to be the same. Surprise us!

MEET OUR INTERNATIONAL JURY PANELWe want to give the young generation of leading designers an opportunity to speak out and make their own statment. Take a look at these creative design

teams who will be judging your submissions:

JUSTYNA FAŁDZIŃSKA & MIŁOSZ DĄBROWSKI

Founders & Designers of UAU PROJECT www.uauproject.com

Warsaw, Poland

UAU project is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Warsaw, Poland. It was founded in 2011 by Justyna

Fałdzińska & Miłosz Dąbrowski, graduates from Industrial Design Faculty on Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Currently

their main interest is exploring and experimenting with consumer oriented 3D printed designs objects.

They want to show that 3D printing is the best way to make good design accessible. They develop their products with passion and commitment and only materials of the best

quality are used, most of which are either biodegradable or highly recyclable.

YUVAL CARMEL & OFIR ZANDANI

Founders & Designers of COZÌ www.cozistudio.com

Tel Aviv, Israel

COZÌ is a high-end brand for lighting fixtures and furniture design. COZÌ founders, Yuval Carmel & Ofir Zandani are two industrial designers that combine multidisciplinary

knowledge of manufacturing techniques, high-end technologies and traditional crafts. Their products are

characterized by a unique morphology, due to a thorough study of materials and a constant interest in pushing the

boundaries of technology to its limits.

Behind each work lies an idea, a vision interpreted, creating a dialog between technology and craft, between perception

and tangibility.

WILLIAM BOUJON & JULIEN BENAYOUNFounders & Designers of BOLD

www.bold-design.fr Paris, France

Bold is a design studio based in Paris founded by William Boujon and Julien Benayoun. Their approach: product and

furniture design from concept to production; full cycle follow up, R&D on technology and materials, establishing

design strategy as well as scenography design.

Since 2008, William and Julien create designs inspired by technological development, science and art. This approach allows them to collaborate with diverse companies like Le

Laboratoire, Paris / Cambridge, the MIT Media Lab (product and experience design), YSL (scenography), Nelly Rodi

(scenography) and Dood, Photocabine and NextMotion (product design).

Currently, Bold is developing projects around 3D printing technology after having designed an FDM 3D printer for the

French company DOOD.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

See terms and conditions on: www.mything.com/mydesignaccessories

JUDGING CRITERIA

We ask designers to emphasize these three main topics in their work.

1. Aesthetic values:

A design should be judged by its aesthetic qualities rather than by the value of the material: the proportion of its elements, the composition as a whole, the final shape that they create and the visual qualities that they reflect. The designers should emphasize the aesthetics of their proposals and create their own design language.

2. Advantages of digital fabrication methods:

Digital techniques allow us to design elements that until now we could only imagine and take our ideas to a final product faster than ever. The main advantage of these technologies in design terms is the possibility of achieving a high level of geometrical complexity. The designers are asked to take into consideration the advantages of digital fabrication methods and 3D modeling techniques in

order to push their designs to a new level.

3. The value of a customizable design:

Today in this digital age, everyone wants to express themselves and make a statement. By providing the option of customization, the user has a stronger connection to the design and this will increase the purchasing potential. We ask the designers to evaluate the possibility of customizing their design. Customization can take many forms: a specific name, a date that means something to the recipient or a personal secret message. We believe in the creativity of the designer to find a sophisticated way of incorporating a personalization area into the design.

The submitted files should not have any personalized message, name, date on them. There is the option during the upload process to indicate the area for personalization.

TECHNICAL CRITERIA

The designs will be produced in our currently offered technologies and materials. Your file must be producible in one of the technologies. For more information please visit: www.mything.com/user/materials

We accept STL and DXF files only. No other file

types will be accepted. The file size must not exceed 30 MB.

For 3D: 1. The design must be watertight and all faces

must face outward. 2. No intersections of faces are allowed.3. Walls must have a minimum thickness of

1 mm or 0.06 in.4. Objects must fit into a 240 x 240 x 240 mm or

7.45 x 7.45 x 7.45 in bounding box.5. Holes must be at least 2 mm wide

For 2D: 1. An item must not exceed the size of

800 x 500 mm.2. It is recommended to have stable connecting

parts of a minimum width of 3 mm or wider to prevent breaking off.

3. All lines need to be color coded and extra thin (0.01 mm): -  Cut lines: Red lines -  Engraved areas: Green lines -  Engrave lines: Blue lines
